^^ Agreed.
I really can't connect with any of the Kenways. I'm not trying to be a fanboy, but after the Legendary Altair and the Master Assassin Ezio, Connor and his family really don't seem like worthy descendants! Also, the "real" story was always Desmond's. We learnt information important to HIS growth, development and journey to being a hero by exploring the lives of his ancestors. He was the main character...his ancestors were just story tools to lead us to important points in the story. To kill him off and just focus on "History Jumping" is stupid.
While this game might be a great stand-alone game, i really can't look at it as an Assassin's Creed game.

@Gusto That's because you haven't tried Jump Around On Rooftops Killing Every Guard In Sight Creed. That one was cool.

Seriously, I can play two hours traight of killing guards and causing mayhem without getting bored.

Maybe it'll explain why Haytham turned against the Assassins. I never really got into the series. I can see why people like it after randomly playing AC3. Even though Desmond's story seems to be completely over, I like the fact that this one has some continuity (albeit backwards) between the generations of Assassins. My only real issue was having to avoid nearly EVERY enemy to get the job done.

Loved all of them, flaws and all. Best addition to the series by far was the naval battles in AC3. To have a seamless transition between sea and land is incredibly exciting. Can't wait.

What I liked about the historical part of the story was that NEITHER side - Brits or Colonials - came out as genuine good guys. Or bad guys particularly. Just people. Greedy, selfish, egotistical, flawed...

Even the Templars weren't purely evil, but were motivated by what they thought was a good end.

Also found it interesting that most of the battles weren't won so much as lost through some [frick] up or another. The historical detail in these games is what elevates them as well. Long may the series continue. Even after Desmond's tale is done. Open up the Animus to other people and explore their genetic history...

But it's good enough to milk...

Video games are a business and they have a successful franchise and want to maximise their opportunity to make money from it while they can. Shocker!

The day they actually suck is the day they stop selling. Or enough to make them think about investing the millions it takes to make the next one.

At some point I can see them dropping the Assassin's Creed part of it and make something entirely different taking what they learned from it.

But even so, having the setting be inside a 'genetic memory' allows them to introduce plenty of variety in the types of stories, settings and periods they can play with.

They could make a far future version, a space based version, prehistoric - anything. The premise allows that flexibility to, yes, milk it as you say, but also to change direction if the audience gets bored with any particular iteration. Connor was done, but people loved the naval battles and certain elements from AC3 and so they've evolved and refined them for AC4 to give us a fresh new experience to look forward to. And I, for one, really am.

Proper excited like.

Sports franchises do it. CoD does it. Even Star Wars movies will be doing it. They'd all be doing it they could physically and financially do it.

But I'm not a fan of GTA particularly. I loved RDR though.

As for nothing new or original... did I mention the naval battles and how frickin' awesome an addition they were?

I do understand what you mean about more time means a deeper, more polished end-product, but Rockstar are in a priveleged position as a developer in that they can AFFORD to take their time over their games. Not many other developers are able to do that and survive, or have the luxury of a publisher who will allow them even if they felt they could.

Read any game developer's blog. They all tell the same story about publisher pressure to meet a deadline and how features they would have liked to include couldn't be implemented in time. Or how every game released pretty much needs patching sooner rather than later...

Rockstar are in a position where they can dictate to the publisher when they release, but it's a rare developer who can do that. It's a great idea, and it would be lovely if every game developer could spend as long as they wanted polishing their games to perfection, but it's idealistic and ultimately not entirely necessary to get some enjoyment out of what we actually get. It's seriously not like they remotely bad games after all. That would be a ridiculous thing to say and only shows inexperience of what else is out there and is to AC what you think AC think is to GTA.

Short version. I like small indie games too.
