There has been a lot of hype surrounding Batman: Arkham City, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum. After receiving glowing reviews from gaming critics, it was finally released in the US today. CVG interviewed marketing game manager to discuss what's next for The Dark Knight. Here's a few tidbits:
CVG: Logically speaking is the next step to move further out into Gotham City?
Dax Ginn: Are you asking me about the future?! I honestly don't know. What happens next depends on how this game is received. We're really proud of the work we've done and I think taking Batman on to the streets of Gotham is where people wanted him to go after the Asylum.
Where we go from here is anyone's guess. There's a philosophy at the studio that as long as we keep making awesome things, awesome opportunities will open up to us. But we can't make any firm decisions because the games industry is a crazy thing. We're just focused on the here and now and getting to October 31. We'll see what people think of this first.
CVG: How long, as a series, can you keep this up for? Do you think you'll get to a point where you think 'We've created a nice rounded package, let's end it there' or are you going to keep going for as long as you can?
Dax Ginn: Man. That's really tough. I mean I think as long as we're still enjoying it and as long as we feel we can contribute to the Batman universe - and that's how it feels. There's some amazing stuff going on with Batman all around the world at the moment and we feel as though we're making our own little contribution in the form of the Arkham-verse and it feels like a real contribution.
CVG: Does Rocksteady have the capability to take on a different superhero with equal success?
Dax Ginn: I think the reason Arkham Asylum and Arkham City work is that we've thought very deeply about what makes Batman who he is. Why he is the way he is and the dark twisted psychology of those experiences he had as a child really make him that way.
That doesn't apply to any other character in the way it so uniquely does to him so we've drawn so much gameplay out of the facets of his personality. If we were ever to do that with any other character it would mean taking that same approach for us because we believe in characteristics and personality traits.
I think we've done exceptional things with Batman as a character, as a man, as a superhero. Like I say, the future is a big question mark for us and I'm not talking a Riddler style question mark it's a proper who knows what's going to happen.
But it's going to be exciting, so long as we focus on high quality, I imagine there's great things in line for Rocksteady.
