TOMB RAIDER 2 Loses Release Date Shortly After Director Ben Wheatley Shares An Update On The Sequel

Tomb Raider 2 director Ben Wheatley recently addressed the status of his sequel, but it's now been confirmed that the movie is undated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Find out more details here...

Recently, Polygon caught up with Rebecca director Ben Wheatley to discuss his new Netflix movie (which hasn't received the warmest of responses from critics). The subject of his Tomb Raider sequel was also broached, and he acknowledged that, "It's kind of in the mists of COVID at the moment in terms of what's going on."

Despite remaining tight-lipped on his plans for Lara Croft, Wheatley did say: "Video games have trouble crossing back into cinema because they are born out of cinema, but the the magic sauce is interaction, which you're then removing back out of the game to put it back into a film. That's the trick the back and forth of it, and that's why it's been very hard to make things successful."

Now, he's going to have a little more time to master bringing a video game to the big screen because The Wrap is reporting that MGM has taken Tomb Raider 2 off the release calendar.

The sequel was first announced back in 2019, and it's been clear for a while now that it wouldn't meet its planned March 19th release date. MGM is believed to be losing around $1 million a month due to No Time to Die's delay, so it's likely this follow-up is no longer a priority for them.

Here's hoping it's not already "game over" for the latest iteration of the Tomb Raider franchise.

@Kumkani - Yeah it flopped in the US, but did pretty good overseas. They were planning on making another one solely for overseas box office but movie budget was supposed to be cheaper (as if the 1st one wasn't already cheap enough).

I don't see this sequel ever getting made especially with so many movie markets currently closing and going to close in the future.

On Another Topic:
Black Lightning season 2 and 3 finally have blu ray releases

Now if only Disney would release more of the marvel netflix shows, I looked them up, seems like they stopped after Iron Fist season 1. Too bad, doubt I would buy everything, but I would for sure buy Daredevil if the whole show was out.

There's a sequel? Was the first one good?

Tomb Raider 2, falls into the same category as the Harley Quinn sequel. Is it worth the financial risk, to continue that main character's story? What about the script would make the sequel a home run, that the first one failed to be?

the first one was instantly forgettable to be honest. didnt walk away thinking it was awful or anything but looking back now i can honestly tell you i dont really remember anything apart from her in a boxing ring and her on a courier bike racing other couriers?

I liked the first movie and was quite interested to see what Ben Wheatley would do with the sequel. Oh well...
