Hugh Jackman Reveals That Bryan Singer BANNED Comic Books From The Set Of X-MEN

We already know that Bryan Singer failed to pay much attention to the source material during the making of X-Men, X-2 and Superman Returns, but check out what Hugh Jackman had to say to about him BANNING comic books on the set of the first movie after the jump.

ComicBook.com have posted an excerpt from Hugh Jackman's interview with EW about The Wolverine, and the Academy Award nominated actor revealed a very interesting story from back when he was first cast as Logan by Bryan Singer for X-Men. The director apparently banned comic books from the set of the movie as he didn't want the actors to be influenced by them instead of the script for the movie. That explains a lot. Regardless, the cast still managed to find a way around this as the comics secretly found their way around the set ("Through the trailer door would come comics," the actor recalled). It was in fact during the production of this movie that Jackman read Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's Wolverine series that the upcoming solo movie is based on.

On a related note, Singer has now removed the Tweet in which he seemingly made either a dig at Marvel or a simple reference (it depends on how you decide to read into it) to Quicksilver being an Avenger. Popular theories for this include Fox not wanting moviegoers to think that the two versions of the character will be related to one another or that Singer was given a dressing down for the negative backlash which followed his apparent swipe at Joss Whedon's plans for the speedster and his sister, the Scarlet Witch. You can see the original Tweet below.

Suddenly Nolan and Shane Black don't seem like such bad CBM directors.

Ughhh I just want a reboot!
X1 and X2 were great, but lets let it die. The actors are turning 50 and the audience has moved on!

Which totally makes sense in a comic book movie.

As Kevin Smith once said when Tim Burton declared he has never read a comic book. "Well that explains Batman".

This whole Quicksilver thing is getting funny, wonder who will win out of the Fox or Mouse.

That explains a lot, I had high hopes for DOFP but thanks to Singer's dick move and his recent films fantasy films Jack The Giant Killer & Superman Returns. My hopes are diminishing, I'm seeing a ton of characters added with no rhyme or reason to it.

This is why I hate Singer. He will never be in the same league as Raimi, Whedon, Nolan, and Snyder.

"..By July 1996, Singer had further turned down the film X-Men another two times, and finally accepted after reading the comics and watching the animated series.[5] The themes of prejudice in the comic resonated with Singer."

There is going to be a whole lot of misconception here.

Singer wrote the script based on the comics.

It can be confusing for an actor to have two different mediums to draw from.

But of course, let the hate continue.

We all will just have to wait for Fox to lose the license to X-men and Marvel gets it back, then we'll see good renditions of the movie....

Hopefully before the sun explodes or the galaxy Andromeda collides with our milky way galaxy...would be nice.

Just keep sucking Singer's dick.

Also you do realize that Joss Whedon helped out and wrote part of X-Men right? That dude is talented, Singer isn't.

Excuse me folks, but I'm about to wax eloquent. Bryan Singer is an absolute moron! Why would you rehire a director that has ruined the comic book genre? The first 20 minutes of X-men 2 was the only good part of the 3 main films. Granted, I loved X-men FC, but did he direct? Thank GOD NO! Hugh Jackman was a great find as Wolvie, but they numbed him down. And banning the very thing from the set that made this world possible, how dense and self sustaining can we be Bryan? The worst of it all was his foot stomping, petty little childish move against Marvel's success in sneaking in Quicksilver. Go to your place in film history as one of the worst directors of all time up there with Joel Schumaker's Batman Forever.

@Levi

I like Nolan. I'm sucking his dick. I like Singer. I'm sucking his dick. How about you stop with the vulgar insulting.

"The financial and critical success of X-Men persuaded 20th Century Fox to immediately commission a sequel. Starting in November 2000,[16] Bryan Singer researched various storylines (one of them being the Legacy Virus) of the X-Men comic book series, choosing God Loves, Man Kills as the premise.[17] Singer wanted to study, "the human perspective, the kind of blind rage that feeds into warmongering and terrorism,"[18] citing a need for a "human villain""

Yes, truly the sign of a comic hater, reading up on comics for the sequel.

Singer is to be credited for X2, which is the best one. Troll elsewhere.

I never liked any of the X films but FC. I have a feeling people will be extremely suprised by how good or bad this movie is. On topic, I don't see why in the world you would ban comic books on set?

And you know its sad, when people are insulting the guys sexual preference.

What does that have to do with anything? Whedon kissed Gregg, call him gay.

This bullshit with Quicksilver is exactly that, but I really don't think it's going to make that big of a difference with the Avengers sequel. Seriously DICK move by Singer though.

As for comics being banned, while the actual censorship is really stupid, you may recall Heath Ledger explaining how he didn't read the comics as he didn't want to be influenced by someone outside the movie.

It's basically creating a controlled environment for a test. It's not at all unheard of, but considering how off some of the characters turned out, I'd say it didn't work out for the best.

Another thing to consider is Halle Berry. She is actually a good actress, but the way she played Storm - it never worked. She was angry with Singer afterwards because of how small a part her character had - I think someone either read the comics or talked with people who had. Afterwards, it's really just playing the character AS IS in the movie series, and not changing things up (which would be unnatural) - in order to maintain that inconsistency. I guess what I'm saying is: she might have actually been able to play the character RIGHT from the start.

kevberg, I think we can actually agree on something. Awesome.
