20th Century Fox's X-Men Universe may have fallen off a cliff with movies like Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, but there were once exciting plans in place for those characters to be pitted against a new villain in Mister Sinister.
After Magneto took centre stage in pretty much every single X-Men movie (occasionally sharing the spotlight with the likes of William Stryker and the Sentinels), that news thrilled fans and all signs pointed to Jon Hamm playing the Cyclops-obsessed big bad.
The Disney/Fox merger happened before he was able to even come close to sticking that diamond on his forehead and we're now left to wonder what might have been.
Talking to Screen Rant about his role in Fargo, the Top Gun: Maverick star once again found himself being quizzed about potentially playing the MCU's Mister Sinister. As well as confirming he remains interested in that role, Hamm also pointed to Doctor Doom as a villain he'd enjoy exploring on screen.
"Those decisions get made at such a high level at this point, definitely above my pay grade," he started. "I would love to. I've been a fan of Marvel Comics and comics in general since I was probably single digits. I think there are tons of stories that I'm familiar with, at least, that are still out there to be told."
"Hopefully, whatever their plans are, they include me. But if not, I know that they have a pretty deep bench of folks that are ready to be a part of those stories. There are certainly a lot of stories in the X-Men world to be told," Hamm continued. "Fantastic Four as well, [like] Doctor Doom. There are so many great things out there. But yeah, I hope I get a chance. Who knows?"
This echoes comments Jon made to us last year when we asked how close he came to playing Mister Sinister. "Yeah, I don't know. Sometimes I find out more about my career from the internet than I actually find out from my agents. So, I didn't really know that was in the works until somebody told me that I didn't get it or it didn't happen."
"I really don't know. Like anybody else, I would be thrilled to be part of that storytelling having been a big comic book fan throughout my early teens and early twenties," Hamm said of Mister Sinister potentially crossing his radar again. "So, we'll see. I don't know. It would be a fun person to play, that's for sure. I look good in purple, I'll put it that way."
Honestly, as cool as it would be to see Hamm as Mister Sinister, we now can't get the idea of him being the MCU's Doom out of our minds, especially with Fantastic Four on the horizon. You can watch our interview with the actor in the player below.
