X-MEN DOFP: Why Time Travel Might Close The Gap Between Marvel Movies and Comics

The inclusion of the Days of Future Past storyline means the big-screen adaptation will take a step in the direction that will separate fans and movie-goers and gear itself primarily to the Marvel faithful.

Time travel is a tricky business at the best of times: from potential romantic involvement with one’s own parents to the ‘Destruction of the Universe as we know it’ it has become a beloved trope of science-fiction enthusiasts everywhere. This being said, once you've incorporated time travel into your story, you’ve effectively given the ol’ shiv to realistic narrative in lieu of all out fantasy.

Director Bryan Singer announced that the X-Men: Days of Future Past sequel would revolve around the titular storyline and take a whack at the whole time travel gimmick.

This is good news because it effectively places the movie in an entirely science-fiction-centric universe, this as opposed to the trend made popular by Christopher Nolan of making superheroes gritty and realistic (arguably an unnatural position for any superhero to be in).

This is not to suggest that The Dark Knight trilogy was lacking for its realism, but that X-Men, a team entirely made up of super powered individuals, deserves a more surreal treatment.

The X-Men movie franchise has, up until now, maintained a hit-or-miss average with its movies and spin-off movies, while none has quite become universally reviled, one or two have toed the thin line between ‘charming but forgettable’ and ‘Razzie-award winner’ while the remainder enjoy a respectable position in the eyes of die-hard fans and casual movie-goers alike.

This being said, most fans agree that while the big screen adaptations have remained close to the source material, none have yet taken that leap into the vast and fantastical world that the comic books offer. Character trademark issues aside, the X-films have kept their world relatively constrained and concise including only the most popular players and ultimately following the ‘one-size-fits all’ guide-lines to appeal to as many people as possible, regardless of familiarity with the comics.

However, the inclusion of the Days of Future Past storyline means the big-screen adaptation will take a step in the direction that will separate fans and movie-goers and gear itself primarily to the Marvel faithful. This suggests that either the popularity of the X-Men franchise has moved beyond a primarily fan-dominated viewership to a more general movie-going reach or that there is a big enough fan-base to justify an unfiltered adaptation of the source material.

A brief (if dubious) synopsis of Days of Future Past portrays just another day for the mutants when team-member Kitty Pryde (Shadow Cat) is possessed by a future version of herself and warns everyone that the future don’t look so bright: concentration camps, giant robots and general hatred of the mutant population. The story includes a large variety of past and future versions of the X-Men and a stilted timeline of alternate universes: all in all the kind of plot that gives Christopher Nolan nightmares.

Singer has more or less confirmed these elements for Days of Future Past, promising sentinels and the return of popular characters which creates an obvious schism between Marvel and DC in terms of realism, the former finding its own niche in all-out fantasy with the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies (Avengers and its spin-offs) and the X-Men films. Whether or not this trend will expand further and the stars will align to unite all of Marvel’s hot titles under one series is yet to be seen but the future looks bright.

Singer's handled x-men with respect so far and it may be a cop-out but a lot of the continuity mistakes aren't technically his doing. He's got a good shot at getting it back on track with an actual comic storyline too

If they use this to somehow restart the franchise during the Reagan era with the original team (Scott, Warren, Hank, Bobby, Jean) I would be fine with that.

I think Kitty should have a large role not Wolverine. PD as Gateway helps Kitty set the world straight and Wolverine is the only X-Man in both timelines.

Enough with the damn Nolan jabs, we get it, DK wasn't your style, it's done, it's over, and it's a style he did with one character. Grow up.

Would be cool to see a Shadow-cat oriented DOFP but Ellen Page doesn't seem like a probable front runner, its probably gonna be an ensemble effort with McAvoy getting more screen time.

i'm looking forward to this film but sticking close to the source we'll have to wait & see.

x-men the last stand,x-men origins wolverine & x-men first class all raped the source material.

This sounds like a Star Trek rip off so they can say that these Movie X-Men shouldn't be held up to their comic book counterparts. Way to cheapen and capitalize on an original idea, Singer.

And didn't Nolan PERFECT terrific overlaying themes in movies? Why was his name insultingly thrown out there?

i do not i have faith in this movie at all, am i the only one who didnt forget what singer did with his last 2 directed super heroe movies!!! i am so afraid that the x men franchise is going to go under the drain after DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.. I ONLY LOVED 1 X MEN MOVIE AND THAT WAS X MEN 1ST CLASS, DIRECTED BY MATTHEW VAUGHN..AND IT WASNT FAITHFUL TO THE COMICS.. I WAS HOPING FOR A REBOOT, WITH THE ORIGINAL 5 X MEN, AND AN NEW LIFE FOR LOGAN, JAMES HOWLET= WOLVERINE IN A COWL IN THE MOVIEVERSE!!!!

None of the X-men movies were what they couldve been IMHO but they are what they are. I wish they had the balls to bring in some of my favorite villains: Sinister, Apocalypse, Brood, Phalanx, Shiar, Morlocks, Nimrod, Arcade etc. The X-Men has one of the best team rogue galleries in comics comparable to JL, Avengers, FF.

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A REAL INTERPRETATION OF SABERTOOTH!! i would love to see sinester, sauron and the savage land. nimrod bastion, apocalypse, a real juggernaut, a real blob, cameos of scarlet wich and quick silver, bishop, cable.. i would loved them all to be in uniforms like they are in the comics not the way singer and ratner presented them in the movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

x-men 2 is the only one i can watch without shouting shit at the tv,they mistreated cyclops in this movie with the lack of screen time but that is pretty much my only fault oh yeah colossus could of had a bigger role.

being a huge x-men fan comic wise, the sole reason i got into comics in the first place.

only enjoying one out four, five if you include x-men origins wolverine is pretty shit.

as for the marvel cinematic universe i enjoyed more of them then i did the x-men movies.

If they would just follow the source material (obviously not all of it) they could make a really good movie. Don't change the leads. The story is about Kitty plain and simple. I'm looking forward to some new X-Men stories on the big screen.

I reallyyy hope this is good...Im not so pumped up for Singer since hes kinda...eh? And his new Beanstalk movie doesnt get me excited for him either...

X-Men 1 is ok. X-Men 2 is too long. X-Men 3 is action packed but couldve been better. First-Class I thought was top notch. Lets just hope this one will be the greatest X-Men movie to date!

" The story includes a large variety of past and future versions of the X-Men and a stilted timeline of alternate universes: all in all the kind of plot that gives Christopher Nolan nightmares. "-

You do realize Chris Nolan is actually KNOWN for mind-bending movies like Memento and Inception, right?

I'd argue he'd handle this plot material better than Singer, so be careful.
ToddTex
ToddTex - 2/17/2013, 3:06 PM
@RobGrizzly
Possibly, but whereas Inception was a deeply layered psychological thriller, X-Men is an all-out, cast-oriented superhero showdown and it's going to have to be a bit bubblier than the brooding intensity a Nolan film would provide.
