X-MEN Star James Marsden Is Still Willing To Return As Cyclops If Marvel Studios Reaches Out

Rumours continue to swirl that the original big screen X-Men will return in the Multiverse Saga, and Cyclops actor James Marsden (Sonic the Hedgehog) has now shared his thoughts on a possible return...

Marvel Studios' plans for the X-Men franchise remain a mystery to us, and we don't anticipate seeing the MCU's take on the mutant team until the Multiverse Saga ends.

However, with Deadpool 3 on the horizon and Hugh Jackman set to return as Wolverine in that movie, we clearly haven't seen the last of the previous iteration of the X-Men. Shawn Levy's threequel is bound to include plenty of familiar faces, while rumours continue to swirl about the original big screen team somehow factoring into Avengers: Secret Wars

During a recent red carpet interview, Cyclops actor James Marsden was once again asked about the possibility of returning as Scott Summers.

His character was always overshadowed by Wolverine in Bryan Singer's X-Men movies and we're still not quite over how the hero was treated in X-Men: The Last Stand (Marsden's commitment to Superman Returns saw Cyclops killed off in short order). Needless to say, a second chance in the MCU definitely seems to appeal to the Sonic the Hedgehog star.

"Sure. Yeah, I mean, I’m all about material, and what the story is, and what the character would be doing, but it’s a character that I played and it’s very close to my heart," Marsden says. "And that family, I miss it dearly. We created a very special thing with the first couple of 'X-Men' movies and yeah, I’d love to explore that."

"But you know, [I] would want to see what that looks like first, I guess."

Cyclops deserves another chance and it would be fantastic to see him show what he's capable of in one of the upcoming Avengers movies, especially with the Multiverse at play.

Check out the full interview with Marsden below.

@KWilly - He's all about the material though, does his character get cucked by wolverine? Or superman? This is his wheelhouse

I don't like the Fox-Men at all, but i still think that Marsden as Cyclops was great casting. Same as Stewart as Xavier.

Having said that, i just really want the Fox characters to go away forever into a black hole of nothingness haha. Give me the proper X-Men dammit!

@TheManWithoutFear -

Halle Berry as Storm was the worst casting of them all. Should've been Angela Bassett from the get.

@RolandD - were gonna need some space pirates now that the guardians are wrapping up... plus I need me some Guardian, and the Shi'ar Empire

@ProfessorWhy - yeah, bring it. I just hope they don’t adapt the Brood storyline. Claremont helped make the X-Men super popular along with having some excellent artists, but the Brood storyline would look even more like an Alien ripoff on film than it did in the comics. Maybe we can call the comic version an homage. 😂

@RolandD - How bout this then. Disney owns all of that. Instead of the Brood, just have the X-Men vs the Aliens.

Too bad he's now almost 50. He could be a good Cyclops.

Nah, just cast him as Reed Richards instead.

He falls into the same boat with Cavill for me: he could’ve been a great character if they had more focus and material for him. Sadly the Foxmen became the Wolverine and co show. And Cyclops, the leader of the X-men, became a background character.

Maybe one last cameo in Secret Wars and then move on to a clean slate. Marvel should do a light reboot after that movie in the whole universe.

Of course he would, the best thing he’s done is bloody Sonic since. Between Westworld and Xmen, I must say I think he’s a pretty dull performer. Block of wood.

He was just treated horribly in the original movies. Singer didn't understand the character at all and got too caught up on the idea that Cyclops is nothing more than a jealous boyfriend, like so many fans do as well.
comicfan100
comicfan100 - 2/24/2023, 8:28 AM
@CorndogBurglar - Cykes reputation is ruined because of those movies. Many don't know the stoic leader, rebel who should be on par with Captain America, in terms of popularity. Here's hoping the MCU treats him with some respect.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 2/24/2023, 8:36 AM
@comicfan100 - Somewhat. People already thought of Cyclops as a boring goody-goody and jealous boyfriend even before that first X-Men movie though.

He's one of the most misunderstood characters in comics. He's one of the best leaders in all of comics, he can fight well enough to go toe to toe with Wolverine (at least for a little while), his power has the potential to be far stronger than what we normally see, and he's highly flawed.

He has confidence issues and questions whether his decisions are the right ones. Mainly because he is one of the few people that can make the right decisions even when they are not the popular decisions. He was horrible to Madelyne Prior and their son when he left them for Jean. And after fusing with Apocalypse he went on a downward spiral.

But these things are all what make him a great character.
comicfan100
comicfan100 - 2/24/2023, 8:44 AM
@CorndogBurglar - Agree. You must already have a fan cast in mind, I'm guessing.

I’m sure a lot of the old X-Men actors will return for Secret Wars. I also imagine Marsden will get ignored by the MCU the same way he was ignored by the X-Men franchise.

Marsden was great an all ...and is a very underrated actor , he's great in comedies ..but I wasn't nuts about his Cyclops...Ty Sheridans wasn't great either. Looking forward to the reboot...hopefully it'll be alot more comic faithful.

I recently rewatched all of Fox's X-movies.
I can guarantee with great certainty that at least X1, X2, First Class and DOFP are better than 80% of current MCU movies.
And yet I also say that I really like how mutants were portrayed at Fox, at least in the films I mentioned above.
Which makes me a bit scared of how they'll be portrayed in the MCU.
If it goes in the same spirit as Phase 4, it will be catastrophic.
