BOX OFFICE: ANT-MAN Kicks Off North American Run With Solid $6.4 Million On Thursday

While it's fallen short of what Guardians of the Galaxy earned when it debuted on Thursday evening last year, Ant-Man has still kicked off its box office run with a good $6.4 million. Hit the jump for details on that and how the movie is expected to perform this weekend...

Marvel's Ant-Man earned an impressive $6.4 million during late night showings on Thursday, an impressive - if not amazing - start for the finale to Phase 3. Guardians of the Galaxy (which also introduced relatively obscure characters and had a strong comedic tone) took $11.2 million last year and ended up far exceeding expectations. It doesn't seem like Ant-Man will do the same, but The Hollywood Reporter is confident that it's stil going to end the weekend with between $60 million - $65 million. That's far from bad and similar to the openings of many of the Phase 1 origin stories like Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor

Others believe the latest Marvel movie could earn less, but it faces a lot of competition thanks to Minions and the R-Rated Trainwreck. Guardians of the Galaxy didn't have that same problem and also had the advantage of having a sequel announced shortly before it was released, something which brought the release a lot of attention at the time. As of right now, Ant-Man is certified "Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with 78% and a consensus which reads: "Led by a charming performance from Paul Rudd, Ant-Man offers Marvel thrills on an appropriately smaller scale -- albeit not as smoothly as its most successful predecessors."

It's also worth noting that GOTG was a bit of a boxoffice diamond in what turned out to be a wasteland of summer blockbusters.

I think Marvel would be pretty satisfied with total of about 500 million. Ant-Man is not well known at all.

This has to be a surreal moment for those fans that got pumped when Wright started talking about the film back in 2007. I mean it's pretty surreal to me and I've only been pumped for it since around 2011.

Guardians had a great sound track; even in the commercials. That appealed to many non CBM fans. In the end, the quality of the film is what drove long term and a solid box office. Ant-Man can/should do well if the general non CBM fan have a similar movie going experience

I think I've decided to go see this movie. I don't have much to do this weekend, and got some extra cash from a loan buyout...so I think I'll make the 2 hour trek to the theatre.

So now what movie will the doomsayers anoint the title of "Marvel's First Flop" to ?

As long as this movie isn't a total failure I think they'll be happy with it. Disney has shown that it's willing to allow Marvel to take chances. And it turned out well for them with GOTG. But you can't expect every obscure comic book series to turn out that way. If this one churns out number comparable to the Phase I films, they'll keep digging into Marvel's sandbox. It may not be enough to justify a sequel, but it certainly won't discourage them to take more risks.

Marvel is a victim of their own success at this point...if they don't continue to top themselves, people spin it as a failure.

Stop pretending that no one gives a shit about this movie because it's called "Ant-Man". If Marvel is such an unstoppable train, the title wont matter because it has MARVEL attached to it.

Saw it last night and going to see it again this afternoon.

The movie is not without flaws. Some characters are unnecessary and sometimes the plot structure gets a little dicy, but I think that has to do with how many drafts and creative shifts happened during the film's long genesis. Having said, though, the movie is a lot of fun. I'm an Ant-Man fan (yes, allow me to put on my hipster glasses and argyle sweater and say, "I liked Ant-Man before he was cool") so I had a lot of hopes and fears for this movie.

Is it the best Marvel movie? No, not even close. But it's not the worst either. My recommendation is: manage expectations and you'll have fun with the film.

Your pal Piggy predicts a $54 million opening and a 2nd place finish. That would be the smallest Marvel opening ever.

Did you read the entire Box Office Mojo article? It becomes quite clear they want this movie to fail. Mixed reactions? Middling to negative reviews? Pointing out the fact that Ant-Man's score in IMBD is probably "fan-biased" (which is true, but I've never seen them saying that for any other film)? Ant-Man has been critically successful and not average, which just shows their true intentions of putting the film in a bad light. Great impartial journalism.
