Edgar Wright Teases A Redemptive Arc For ANT-MAN

While discussing his movies and why he feels the need to constantly move forward and not focus on "nostalgia", the director explains why making Ant-Man -- a character many fans will have loved as kids -- doesn't make him a hypocrite. He also teases some of the themes of the movie..

In an interview with Cinemablend, The World's End director Edgar Wright talks about his work on that "Cornetto trilogy", and why he thinks it's not a good idea to dwell on the past with "remakes of movies that we loved when we were kids, toys that we had when we were kids." Of course this leads to interviewer to ask about Wright's next movie; a big screen adaptation of the classic Marvel character, Ant-Man. Wright explains why he feels this doesn't make him a hypocrite, before dropping a couple of hints about what we might expect to see from the "hero's journey" aspect of the story.

"..Because there’s never been a film adaptation of that character, I think it’s OK. If it was a remake of a film from 30 years ago, then I would be a hypocrite, but because it’s never been made into a movie ever. And also, to be honest, there are elements in that script that actually do continue themes from the other movies, an unlikely hero, a chance at redemption, and so, it’s not something, it’s going to be, it will be different, but I think it will still feel like one of my films."

So what could Ant-Man do that requires redemption? I'm sure many of you are now calling to mind the Ultimate version of Hank Pym that smacks his wife around...but I seriously doubt that'll come into play! Anyway, sound off with your thoughts/speculation in the usual place, and click on the link below for the interview in full.

Seriously can't wait. Been waiting for this since 2005. Edgar seems to know what he's doing.

Yes. He stated that's a theme done in other films that he's continuing.

The 'redemption' story is the superhero story. I can't think of too many heros that don't follow that formula.

Even Cap was an 'unlikely hero' who had to proove himself and Thor's first film is textbook redemption story.

Ant-Man is one of my favorite heroes and Edgar Wright is a great director that seems to know what he is doing, he does have a script that took him six years in the making after all, despite what people say I think that Ant-Man is going to rock! Just wait and see!

"An unlikely hero with a chance at redemption"

So they are including the bitch slap Ant-Man gave Wasp in the comics, Wasp takes him to court and sues, and it's all about Ant-Man trying to recover and come back from that.

Think I may have spoiled Ant-Man for you guys.

If there's one thing I know about Edgar and his movies, is they're different. Cornetto trilogy for example. All 3 are different. While taking themes from the previous film, (I.e comedy, situation, parady), they're all different wether the plot is different, or charecters or whatever. If you watched any of his films in the cornetto trilogy, you'll know it feels like one of his movies, but in some way different and fresh. That's what he was saying by not trying to dwell on past films and make something different by still taking themes and using them.

"there are elements in that script that actually do continue themes from the other movies, an unlikely hero, a chance at redemption, and so, it’s not something, it’s going to be, it will be different, but I think it will still feel like one of my films."-Edgar Wright.

I always had a sneaky suspicion that Antman was supposed to be part of the Phase One cluster of films but due to the surprise success of Ironman, the delay in production of Thor and Edgar Wright's desire to do other projects the film got bumped.

And I think the slot was filled by IM2 instead.

From reading that it sounds like either Scott Lang or Eric O'Grady. I understand the Ultimate Hank Pym thought, though.

Pretty much confirms Lang.

Ant-Man should have come out years ago but Wright kept on faffing about with other projects, looks like Feige and co have locked him down to do it.

So... he's not making Ultron and I doubt they're going to make him beat his wife so what does he need redemption from?

This movies probably going to suck as bad as the character himself.

The same people who say that are the same people who know nothing about the character. IMO PYM is one of the most underrated character in comics. He is always foreshadowed by Stark, Banner, or Reed Richards. He's arguably the smartest guy in Marvel Comics.

On a side note, I hope Edgar Wright gives us a Giant man also.

Dude, stop pointing fingers.

Most people here had no faith in Ant-Man until Wrights name was announced. Even still, people are wondering why "better avengers" weren't announced. The character has a controversial history and would be hard to take seriously to be honest.

So yes my interest in this is all Edgar Wright. I'd bet more than half of the people here are interested because of Wright too.

Should be the other way arund, with Pym. It should be about the fall of a classic, smiling hero.
Ocelot
Ocelot - 8/27/2013, 7:46 AM
Expect Pym to just be the bumbling elderly inventor of the Pym particles and suit, who's around the same age as Selvig or a bit younger who's tech gets stolen by one of his workers. He'll be a tutor character(we'll probably get flashbacks on how he created the suit). Lang will be the brawn, Pym the brains.

Expect Lang to be the main character of the film, plot will centre around him, his motives and the villains who tasked him with his objective. Dont be surprised if The Wasp isn't in the film. Marvel Studios are treating the character just like how they do in the comics.

rorywilliams - 8/27/2013, 7:49 AM
"Redemption arc" sounds like Scott Lang.

There's no way they're including Pym's spousal abuse and making it a redemption arc for him. It turned the character into a laughingstock in the comics so there is no way Disney launches a 150 million dollar movie with a wife-beater as the protagonist.
Orphix
Orphix - 8/27/2013, 7:50 AM
The thing about Stark in the MCU is that he has a big history with A.I. and technology. The reason he graduated so young from MIT was his work on A.I. and robotics (which I presume is when he made the little 'scutters' that help him in his Lab).

Obviously he went on to create JARVIS - so this is kind of his specialist subject. Ultron, I would imagine, is the culmination of all his work on his Ironman suits, his knowledge on AI and his desire to put aside his need to put himself in the suit.

As an interesting side note I do wonder if RDJ hadn't of signed on for A:AoU maybe we would have seen a Pym created Ultron instead.

Ant-man is a wife beater. Stop justifying hitting women.

Holy shit you misquoted him! Some of you are too.

"an unlikely hero, a chance at redemption"

He didn't flat out say he has a charecter who's looking for redemption. He was lusting themes he's going to carry over to his movie. Which means we can still have PYM be ant man.

Plus, at Comic Con 2012, Edgar wright at the marvel panel had a tales of astonish #12 comic book with him. Guess who appeared in that? Henry PYM.

They need to treat the ants in the movie like horses; what if when you shrink down, you find that ants are like horses. You can put them, train them, communicate with them, etc. Pym's interaction with ants doesn't have to be unbelievable or cheesy.

Doubt there will be an actual figurehead supervillain, it will probably just boil down to being a bunch of "suits" from a "company" and the dangers from shrinking down.
