Jon Favreau Shares Thoughts On Edgar Wright Exiting Marvel's ANT-MAN

Revealing the original Fantastic Four movies were the initial model for Iron Man, director Jon Favreau has weighed in on Marvel and Edgar Wright parting ways on the Ant-Man adaptation. Check it out!

While Marvel Studios first established its shared universe and self-produced brand with Iron Man (2008), director Jon Favreau was hired the same year, 2006, that Edgar Wright had signed on to helm the company's Ant-Man adaptation, which the British filmmaker is no longer directing. In light of Wright and Marvel/Disney parting ways on the 2015 project, Favreau was asked about the split while promoting his critically acclaimed Chef movie.

"Edgar's a dear friend of mine - I was so looking forward to seeing his version of Ant-Man," he told Shortlist during an interview today. "All Edgar's films have been studio films, it's not like he's never made one before. I think he's been used to a situation where he can have tremendous creative say around his story and casting, and Marvel has built an entire franchise around their style of telling stories." He continued, "I know both parties well and I respect his decision to see that he wasn't going to be fulfilled in the process. That's all I can really say."

When asked whether or not Iron Man felt like a gamble at the time he was directing, Jon Favreau responded: "The model was the Fantastic Four films with Fox. You were expected to spend a certain amount of money that would make you a certain amount of money back as long as the effects are good. They wanted to figure out a way to get the movie to audiences for a price. I think by casting Iron Man the way we did, it classed the brand up. It allowed us to bring a certain humorous tone that had been lost from, say, the Bond franchise. With Daniel Craig, those movies gained a harder edge, meaning there was definitely room for a new humorous cad adventurer. That archetype had not been filled in a long time. Through Iron Man, Marvel found its tone and voice, but nothing was expected of it. And then the success came, and then there was pressure to continue that brand, and that’s where it becomes more challenging."

It's safe to say the challenging aspect is what resulted in mixed reviews for Iron Man 2, and Jon Favreau
ultimately leaving the Marvel franchise's director's chair and going on to direct Chef and upcoming Jungle Book adaptation, which just added Iron Man 3's Ben Kingsley to its voice cast.

Favreau knows what's up. They all support Wright as creators.

While I like what Marvel Studios have done with their movies and while I believe they know how to handle their characters I can't blindly believe in everything they do even if deep down, I don't agree with it. Sure I can have faith but I can't 100% say every move and derision they make is gold.

Why does everything have to have humor to be good? Thats just a ridiculous way to go about things. Of course Marvel movies are less action drama and more like action comedy. 90% of the time the comedy just doesnt work and has only worked for Iron Man and Captain America 2.

Oh jeez...please dno't bring up Bond in an Iron Man discussion. THat nutjob that insists on posting the same editorial every week about Feige wanting to make the next Iron Man like a Bond film will just have a field day.

I love Iron Man 2!

It is the gateway to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some of the action intensity was lost for a more paced story dealing with his dying and his father, but I liked all of that stuff. Best Iron Man movie!

I honestly think if Marvel was run back in 2005-2008 by the same executives, with the same mindset, that run it today, Robert Downey Jr wouldn't have been cast as Iron Man. I think they would have viewed the casting as being too risky, and they would have gone with a safer pick.

That's how Marvel strikes me after Wright departed Ant-Man. Back when they were a small, independent movie studio, they took a lot of risks, but now that their movies are guaranteed to make 9-10 figures, they're starting to play things a little more conservatively.

I hope the creative difference is Hawkeye and Mockingbird being a part of the film. That could explain where Clint was. Wait when is ant man supposed to take place? Before Avengers AoV, during or after? I know it's part of phase 3, but where in the MCU time line does it take place? I am GROOOOOTT!!!!

There is definitely a good brotherhood between directors. Classy.

That being said, I couldn't give a shit less that Wright is gone.

It's too bad Favreau gets the blame for the shortcomings of IM2. What about the writers? Or Marvel Studios itself, for forcing in so much Avengers set-up?

I predict Favreau will get another shot at directing an MCU film, perhaps if RDJ is wooed back for IM4.

Even the darkest grittiest movies have an element of humor on them. The Godfather has funny moments for God's sake. Jaws was quite humorous in parts. Humor isn't a crime. You can argue about "the awkward placement of humor" but ultimately that's a very subjective thing. Marvel movies have their share of issues but I really don't think humor is one of them.

I bow at the feet of Jon Favreau.

The FIRST of the directors of the incredible Marvel Studios Avengers Film Initative.

And Wright can go [frick] himself. DRY.

Him and Shane Black, as well.
