Michael Douglas Reveals The Fate Of 'Janet Van Dyne' In ANT-MAN And More

We've all been wondering about whether or not Janet Van Dyne (a.k.a. The Wasp) will play a role in Ant-Man, and now Michael Douglas (Hank Pym) has revealed that character's role in the movie as well as much more. Peyton Reed meanwhile confirms he's been in touch with Edgar Wright...

In an interview with EW, Michael Douglas let slip some very interesting details about his role in Ant-Man. As many fans suspected, his wife Janet will be in the movie, but dies in some sort of accident. It's possible that this occurred during one of their first missions fighting crime together, so could this be why Hank Pym has such a low opinion of superheroes? (as we heard in that leaked audio of the test footage) That's all speculation for the time being, but The Wasp will obviously have only a very minor role. "My name is Dr. Henry Pym. I’m an entomologist. I’m also a physicist and I discovered in 1963, a way, a serum to reduce a human being to the size of ant maintaining the strength. Not only that, but I was able to find a way to communicate with the ants. But unfortunately during this process, a tragic personal accident happened with my wife, my daughter, Evangeline, Hope. So I’ve had to pass my powers and strengths onto a mentor."

That will of course be Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd), and Douglas had this to say about why he hires him as the new Ant-Man. "Because my partner, my partner, Corey over there, f–ked me good. Darren Cross, my partner, my mentor, my nemesis, has taken my company and taken it in a different direction. I need help, I desperately need help. I need someone who’s a master thief, someone with a brilliant mind, and somebody who can pull off a really great heist." Be sure to watch the rest of the video as Peyton Reed reveals that he has exchanged emails with original writer/director Edgar Wright, and much more. This seems like an interesting direction to take the movie in with Janet/Hope, but here's hoping the latter doesn't end up becoming a villain like her comic book counterpart. What do you guys think?

So she dies before he becomes Ant-Man? So we don't even get an Ant-Man and Wasp '60s era?
Also, it i interesting to note that he seems to point to Evangeline, when referring to his wife. Could this mean that she is playing both Janet and Hope?

She died in The Ultimates, too. But... differently.

Loeb was in a dark place, when he was writing Ultimates.

The only thing that could make me happy about this movie right now is the Comic-Con footage.

I think this will turn out to be another excellent Marvel film. Michael Douglas may knock it out of the park as Pym. Just from the small video piece at the Con it seems he's got an interesting take on the character. And I love the idea of a super hero heist film, and everything we've heard about that. All that being said... Old Hank Pym, no Janet as Wasp, Cross as Yellowjacket? This seems to be going further out from the source material than any of the other films. It's a strange fit for the MCU in that respect. Reading interviews and such it seems Edgar wanted to make more of a stand alone film that wasn't tied so directly to canon. I can see where the rift over "creative differences" may have come from. Like I said, I still have hope for the movie, I have faith in Feige. But no Pym/Wasp with the Avengers? Cross not Pym as Yellowjacket, among other things? Wound have preferred they not go that route.

I'm surprised how invested in the role Michael Douglas seemed to be.
It sounds like a solid script, after all.

This Hope character will just be Janet for all intents and purposes.
People here need to chill. "OMG they ruined Hank by making him old and Janet by making her dead!"
Seriously, chill.

I know how they can make this film work. Set it in the future. So then Hank will be young in Avengers 3 and Janet will still be alive. The only drawback is you would have to replace Paul Rudd. But the impression I got from him after watching all of his ComicCon interviews was he is not that invested in the character of Ant-Man, or comic books in general. So I don't think he would mind.

This cast feels incredibly awkward with one another. Rudd and Lilly are like "Hey! Let's not give the whole thing away!" and Douglas is like "Here's the entire plot of the film! And Corey Stoll [frick]s me!"

Marvel, stop this nonsense script before you ruin all goodwill with your readers. There is nothing good about Edgar Wright's direction on the movie. Take it back to square one with a young Hank Pym and Janet.
