POLL/DISCUSSION: The First Trailer For Marvel's ANT-MAN

The first teaser trailer for the Peyton Reed directed Ant-Man movie debuted at the end of Agent Carter's première last night. Though fairly brief, we did get quite a few shots of Paul Rudd suited up as the diminutive superhero. Let us know what you thought after the jump..

Last night the first teaser for Marvel's Ant-Man hit the interwebs with a resounding... meh? Personally I liked it, but there's no doubt the overall reaction was mixed -- especially when you take into account the usual fan-hype surrounding a Marvel movie trailer. We begin (as always) with a voiceover, pretty much confirming that Michael Douglas' Hank Pym will be recruiting Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) as the new Ant-Man. Lang has turned to crime (most likely in an attempt to help his sick daughter, Cassie), and Pym seems to be offering him a chance at redemption by becoming the hero his daughter "already thinks he is". We then get quick flashes of Corey Stoll as the villain of the piece (Darren Cross, who will be an incarnation of Yellowjacket) and Evangeline Lilly as Pym's estranged daughter, Hope van Dyne, who looks to be training Lang to better kick some supervillain ass. From there we see Lang in the Ant-Man costume (a bit goofy looking?), before he shrinks down and hitches a ride on the back of an ant as its wings make helicopter sounds.

The trailer adopts a surprisingly serious tone for the most part, with only a couple of flashes of humour as Rudd's Scott Lang baulks at the superhero name he's expected to take on. The marketing leading up to the trailer's release definitely suggested a bit more of a tongue-in-cheek vibe, and both Peyton Reed and the film's previous director Edgar Wright  (who wrote the first script draft, but that's now credited to Adam McKay and Paul Rudd) have backgrounds in comedy. Then again, so did the Russo brothers! I think it's safe to say we can expect quite a bit of humour, but at the end of the say this will inevitably fit the Marvel movie mould -- for better or worse. This was obviously just our first brief glimpse of Ant-Man, but from what you've seen so far, what are your thoughts? Vote below and be sure to sound off in the usual place.

Nothing too special. The more excited I get, the more nervous I get that it will let me down.

Pft, I'm not worried: People (including myself) thought that the first GotG trailer sucked ass. But over time it grew on you and then it sold it to me pretty well.

This will do just that (:

Its a bad trailer but I think the movie is still going to surprise people. I remain mostly optimistic about it. Though I do think marketing it and Age of Ultron at the same time is a really bad move. They should've moved this to a couple more months after its current release date.

Honestly, the biggest problem with the teaser is that it really didn't do much to sell audiences on WHY we needed a superhero with the name "Ant-Man" in the first place. To the mainstream audience (and even some fanboys), it's a ridiculously weird concept, so Marvel would've been well-advised to sell us on the concept. Simply making fun of the name in the sting at the end wasn't the answer, IMO.

The tone of the teaser is objectively great...but it would've been better to focus on the more personal aspect and redemption angle in a later trailer, not in the very first teaser. Combine that with the choppiness of the editing and a few tonally jarring moments, and it led to the "meh" reactions.

Teaser did what it was supposed to do.
It got me even more hyped.

@ekrolo2

I think that's the smartest way to do it. To show people what happens after the events of Age of Ultron in the Marvel Universe and what kind of world they now live in, hence acting as an epilogue to Phase 2 while it stands on its own two feet.

I think it could've included more than the SDCC footage that had been shown to other viewers but overall I loved Douglas's dialogue and I loved the theme music in the background. Lang needed more dialogue (call me a nitpicker all you want) but his dialogue just seemed to be placed in at the wrong time. They could've transitioned some things a little bit better but I still enjoyed the teaser. Didn't show too much but it showed enough to capture the tone of the film.

It's a teaser, not a trailer!

whatever the difference is...

I believe that whis will be the same like Iron Man 3. You get the feel that everthing is so serious but when you watch the movie its just straight up comedy.

@SauronsBANE

Exactly! In a universe where we've got the "human side" covered with Iron Man, the more crazy sci-fi guy and Captain America the more cover, espionage guy, they really needed to show why Ant-Man is relevant to be another play for that corner of MCU. Hell Black Panther already has that just based on the fact he's a world leader and will be spending lots of time dealing with stuff in Africa.

Ant-Man doesn't have anything unique to him just based on this trailer to people who don't read all the interviews and pre-release stuff like we do.

I'm not gonna be a douchebag and put my opinion out there on how I would've done the trailer, but I do kinda wish they made a bigger deal of his ability to shrink. He just kinda did it and that was it.

@ekrolo2 Agreed. I guess I was expecting the teaser to actually answer the question of why there should be an Ant-Man movie in the first place, and they didn't really go in that direction.

I mean, you summed it up perfectly. Those are the roles for those guys...so what's Scott Lang's role? And even bigger than that, what's his role in the whole MCU? Even as someone who follows all these news like a proper little fanboy haha, I still barely have any idea how this movie connects with the rest of the universe.

I get it's just a teaser though, so that's why I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for now. Hopefully they put out a really wow-inducing trailer next time.

there was also a new flash trailer with Pied Piper last night
was i the only one who saw that?

on topic...

the Ant-Man trailer was good, but... its a little off pace, a little to dark (A LITTLE) and as SauronsBANE said it really doesnt explain anything.
but you know, hence it being called a teaser

I had to put Disappointing. I'm very aware of what the goal of a teaser is but this was too by the numbers to get me excited. Hopefully it's great!

People expect the entire worlds worth in a TEASER trailer. Greed sucks.

And besides, Marvel has earned the public's trust. Faithful viewing doesn't contradict appeal.

I don't really know how to answer that question, personally I think its pointless to make an Ant-Man movie now that Infinity War is on the horizon. I think an Ant-Man film after that fiasco is done and the big three franchises are done would be a better time for Ant-Man to come out. But I guess its been in development this long they probably want to get it over with already.

Baka - 1/7/2015, 3:29 PM
I'd expect the next trailer to focus more on who yellowjacket is and what he wants

Lang's motivation was clear from what was shown. That's enough to fill in the bridge for now until the FULL theatrical trailer comes out.
