Road To INFINITY WAR: Rare AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Concept Art Reveals Alternate Costumes For The Team

Earth's Mightiest Heroes look a lot different in Infinity War but what about the changes made to the team in Age of Ultron? Here, we look at alternate designs for Scarlet Witch, Captain America, and more.

Following in the footsteps of The Avengers was never going to be an easy task but with Joss Whedon back at the helm, Avengers: Age of Ultron gave it a good try back in 2015. Introducing new heroes and a terrifying villain in the form of Ultron, the sequel brought an awful lot to the table and generated a lot of excitement among fans. While Thanos will no doubt be an even more formidable threat in Infinity War, we're now taking a look back at the movie by sharing some incredible concept art.

Today, we're finally taking a look at each member of the superhero team (minus The Vision, who you can find by clicking here) and the work which went into coming up with their respective costumes.

As well as startlingly different designs for characters like Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, we have interesting takes on the likes of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury. There's even casual wear for the team, something which is definitely surprising to see them all wearing. So, click either one of the buttons below to check out this amazing batch of concept art...

The Twins

When we first meet Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, they're in the custody of Baron Von Strucker and that means no fancy superhero costumes! That explains why The Twins look so rough here!

Scarlet Witch

Marvel clearly put a lot of work into coming up with the perfect look for the Scarlet Witch and while some of these are very grounded, others bear a striking resemblance to her comic book counterpart!

Quicksilver

Poor old Quicksilver didn't last for very long in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it's interesting that Joss Whedon never seemingly considered something a little closer to the source material.

Captain America

Captain America looks very much like he did on screen here and it's fair to say this suit was a definite upgrade from what we got in The Avengers. In fact, it's arguably his best big screen costume to date.

Thor

Well, this is a very different look for the God of Thunder! While it's presumably casual look for Thor, it's not what we're used to seeing but would have been interesting to see on screen.

Iron Man

A look at late designs Iron Man's Mark 43 armour (there are differences between the two if you inspect them closely), this was a pretty cool take on the hero but his Avengers: Infinity War duds are better!

The Hulk

Avengers branded pants for the Jade Giant? As you can see, Marvel mulled over at least a couple of different designs which would have explained how Bruce Banner could avoid exposing himself!

Black Widow

Black Widow is not a character it's hard to get wrong but it would have been very interesting seeing her suit glowing red as opposed to the blue design we ended up seeing in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Hawkeye

With S.H.I.E.L.D. dissolved, Hawkeye was given a slightly more comic accurate costume for The Avengers sequel and these images show the work which went into the process of updating his look.

Nick Fury

No longer the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury needed a new look by the time Avengers: Age of Ultron concluded and these show a couple of alternate costumes for the fan-favourite spy.

Casual Avengers

Earth's Mightiest Heroes are given the opportunity for some downtime in Avengers Tower in Age of Ultron and these designs show what casual costumes for the team may have looked like.

Quicksilver..... please bring him back. It was such a waste to kill him off so quickly 🙄

@Supercat6376 - So I was going to post this below but I'll do it here. When Aaron Taylor-Johnson got the role for Quicksilver, there were rumors he signed a multi-picture deal. I wonder if he may be brought back in the future using one of those infinity stones.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I was kind of hoping (knowing it was 99% not happening) that he was going to come back as Penance (or a twist on the character). It would’ve been an easy way to have Scarlet Witch go mad with anguish.

@HeavyMetal4Life - did they ever confirm that?? I just feel like it’s all hands on deck in the next two movies. It would make sense to bring him back.

@Supercat6376 - Well Feige has said as far back as 2015 and 2016 that he was truly dead and wasn't going to be used anytime soon. But if I remember correctly, it was true about Johnson doing a multi-picture deal. Which is why there was speculation he was going to show up in Civil War. I'd have to do deeper research online to find out more.

@Supercat6376 - Yes. I’m still hoping for that. When Feige confirmed that he wasn’t coming back he used some weasel words. He said something like Quicksilver was not coming back anytime soon, not that he was never coming back.

The Scarlet Witch one with the headband is so much better than what we got in the movie.
Otherwise, everyone looked great in AoU, especially Captain America.

The Cap suit is so well done. I think The Russos really perfected it with dialing some of excessive red back a bit in Civil War.

@BlackBeltJones - The Russos & their costume designer(s) killed it since The Winter Soldier. I love that all of his modern suits post Avengers 1 are military meets superhero. I prefer this look to his current comic costume, which is his original suit.

@BlackBeltJones - Only problem with the CW suit for me was the lack of white stripes on his biceps. It balances the blue.

I liked Scarlet Witch’s cost up there;the one where the front firms the shape of her comic counterparts’s headpiece.

Yep, I like those Scarlet Witch concepts, especially the ones that made her look more like a sorceress. And Black Widow would've looked great with the glowing red imo.

While the Scarlet Witch’s outfits haven’t been bad, they have been less than inspired. That being said, this is one time but I don’t think they should go comic accurate. She doesn’t need to wear a bathing suit and Kirby sure made some weird headpieces back in his day. I like the first one on the right the best, but I just enlarged the pics and noticed the headpiece on the last one. It’s a nice homage without looking ridiculous.

@RolandD - That's why Tony should have made the headset for her, keeping out certain elements or preventing her enemies from sabotaging her. The headset also could have made it to where she could concentrate better and her powers would be more easy to use and pinpoint. Something like that.

This is gonna be hard for me to say because I’m the biggest Joss Whedon fan. Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Serenity were my obsessions growing up. I still think they’re incredible.

But his choices for costumes in the Avengers films were often terrible. His Loki costume was fantastic, loved the piratey vibes (though the horns could have been better executed). And Iron Man’s suit in the final battle was one of his best. He gets credit for those.

But Cap in the first Avengers wore one of the most ridiculous costumes ever put to film. He looks so silly and out of place, like he’s running around in dorky cosplay pajamas whilst everyone else is in a blockbuster. What was he thinking?? And the scene where Cap is suited down on the Hellicarrier and he’s just got pants and a shirt and those giant red boots. He looked like he was wearing stripper heels. It was so strange... don’t understand how choices like those get put on film? Surely someone looks at it and goes we can do better?

Hawkeye was okay but far from as great as he could have looked. Hell a simple purple T shirt with a cool jacket could have looked more iconic than the generic vest thing they gave him.

I’m consistently amazed that they never give Black Widow a better look, the black cat suit is so non-distinct. Throwing on some defining bits and pieces like the gold wristband things, whatever they’re for, would go a long way to giving her a more recognizable and iconic look.

But the biggest costume letdowns were Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Ultron. The choices baffle me. I mean all the silly eccentricites of Cap’s outfit and they can’t give Quicksilver a blue shirt with a big bold lightning bolt on it? It wouldn’t look cheesy (unlike a lot of the costumes) and it would be easy, bold, recognisable and iconic. But they gave him some wierd i distinct Nike looking thing? I just don’t get that.

Scarlet witch looked alright, but how much more would she have looked like Scarlet Witch with the head thing? That’s her visual defining feature. The rest is generic and found on a lot of comic heroes. But you see that head thing and you know it’s her. And it looks great in that concept art so why not? And its use is easily explained away... helps control her power, whatever. Why leave it out? Is it laziness?

And Ultron... man. Almost all of the concept art is incredible, and they went with one of the very few lame, silly designs. He looks so great in the frankensteinish suit and even the sentry things look okay (looked better in a lot of the art designs though...) but he can’t be taken seriously through the rest. And James Spader’s voice is so descriptive and rich on its own, and his motion acting. They didn’t need the expressions. That’s proven by the effectiveness of Ultron’s first and last scenes. His best scenes, where he shows no expression. Spader’s voice just does all it needs to. And he’s scarier and cooler for it.

I love Joss so much but I just don’t get these choices. When it comes down to it I think Joss srruggles with visuals when he goes big budget. Firefly was one of the most beautiful shows I’ve ever seen cinematography and costume-wise. But the movie lost all of that, and looked ugly and totally foreign to the show.

It looks to me like Infinity War sets to place all of the returning characters in their alternate outfits.

Spider-Man is wearing an Iron-Spider version of the Ben Reily design.
Cap is Nomad
Ironman appears to be wearing the Bleeding Edge outfit.
Hawkeye is Ronin
Black Widow is Yelena Belova (I promise you that's the name she's using while a fugitive)
Hulk might go Grey before the end of the film
Thor is Ultimate Thor
Black Panther will be wearing a different suit than Civil War.
Ant-Man's suit is different. Wasp may not appear, but if she does, she's sporting the "team up" costume.
Vision will have his human form
Hell, even Thanos is wearing some fairly different clothes than his average affair.

This film is the movie equivalent of unlocking alternate costumes for all the main characters in a game.
