Bad News For The X-MEN And FANTASTIC FOUR As Things Start Looking Good For Comcast/Fox Merger

Disney has bid a whopping $52.4 billion for 21st Century Fox but according to a new report, Rupert Murdoch is "not set on selling" to the House of Mouse and that could be bad news for Marvel Studios...

Comcast is currently preparing to make another bid for 21st Century because they hate us all and want to stop the Fantastic Four and X-Men arriving in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Well, that or they realise what a great acquisition the studio will be. Regardless, one Wall Street analyst believes that Disney's attempt to purchase Fox could be in even greater jeopardy than most of us initially thought.

Apparently, Fox owner Rupert Murdoch is only interested in doing business with the highest bidder and seeing as Comcast is likely to top Disney's $52.4 billion offer with a $60 billion all-cash bid, things could soon go in the company's favour. "Rupert, like his shareholders, are now fully aligned and simply want the best possible outcome, meaning the most dollars, whether that's cash or cash and stock."

"Rupert Murdoch is not set on selling to Disney," Greenfield continues. "This is a real opening for Comcast to come in with a very significant premium bid to where Disney is now." If Comcast nabs Fox, it means Universal will become a force to be reckoned with and the X-Men and Fantastic Four will remain out of Marvel's grasp. Here's hoping we find out what's happening sooner rather than later.

Come on Disney! Time to wake up Uncle Scrooge to get another 10ish bil.

@RageDriver2401 - i think disney is waiting for the court decision on time warner/at&t merger before placing a higher bid.

But i think disney might walk, as i remember reading from deadline.com that 52 bil in cash/stocks is already 40% of disney assets and i doubt disney will offer more than that.

To everyone here who thinks that selling to Universal will mean Marvel gets the rights back, please think about how stupid that sentence is in terms of contracts. Marvel wouldn't have the Donners put that clause into their contract with Fox, especially not coming off of Fox getting the biggest hit ever at the time with Titanic. That would be moronic. If those kind of clauses existed, do any of you realize how easy it would be to get out of debt? Hell, if those kind of clauses existed, Marvel never would've gone bankrupt in the first place.

But yeah, all that Disney has more than Comcast is what they have less than and that's debt. Comcast has more cash by the bucketload.

@RageDriver2401 - Well the big difference is here is cash!!!! If I recall Disney was offering large amounts of stock......stock goes up and down on a daily basis.....cash is KING!

@Yaf - I’m not sure of what you’re saying, exactly, but it’s not exactly crazy or rare to add a stipulation that a company licensing the rights to something can’t just turn around and sell those rights to someone else. People like to have a say in who they are doing business with in the long term.

That’s not to say that the rights are definitely coming back, but it’s certainly not a stretch to think that Fox can’t just up and sell the X-men rights to anyone without Marvel’s permission.

@JoeMomma29 - Actually, cash goes up and down on a daily basis as well.

@Chewtoy - Yes but cash is more secure than stock....would you rather someone give you 100 bucks in cash or here are some pieces of paper...they may be worth 100 today or less/more tomorrow.

@JoeMomma29 - Well, it would depend on whether I need cash immediately, what national currency the cash was paid in, what the stock was, what the stock was projected to do, what the tax laws were, etc.

And of course, when you’re talking literally billions of dollars instead of one hundred, these differences mean even more. At the moment I typed this, the US dollar index was down .18% compared to market opening, while Disney Stock was up .58%

@JoeMomma29 - I'm thinking they would also be taxed on cash. But not on stock.

@Fashionbomb - you get taxed on stock holdings too

LOL, FOX knows Disney has boatloads of money. They're gonna get every penny out of them if possible. Disney simply gonna have to use their wallet hard.

@KWilly - if Comcast beats out Disney that will be a huge embarrassment to Disney and may even tarnish the Marvel-Disney relationship a little

@RocknRolla

“may even tarnish the Marvel-Disney relationship a little”

The Marvel properties were pretty low on the priority list compared to everything else the merger had to offer.

Like they were just the cherry on tone of the dessert.

@regularmovieguy - Exactly! Some people on this website are so naive to think Disney care about Marvel/Fox properties

@RocknRolla - Let me get this straight.. if Disney doesn’t top Comcast’s 60 billion in cash.. that will affect the relationship between Feige and Bob Iger? Why would it?

X-men and F4 rights are only a tiny fraction of the Fox’s value. There’s no leverage for Marvel here.

@regularmovieguy - Your right. This is why wise old Feige is not counting his chickens and not writing fox characters in their future plans.
Feige knows what to do. He and mCU are going to still outshine the rest with the characters they have got.
Maybe Comcast will be better movies and comp for McU to up their game even more.
I never took any of the news for granted. Neither did Feige.
On the movie side X-Men and FF are no longer premium in the minds of the general public. MCU characters are. At least for now.
By time Comcast get anything going. MCU will be well into their 2nd generation of stories featuring new characters and learned from their first go at their cinematic universe model

That's how business works, I guess. Although, I could still happen that Comcast is willing to sell these specific Marvel rights to Disney, because cbm's aren't part of their strategy.
Battabing
Battabing - 6/7/2018, 1:51 PM
@Unites -
Why would they do that? Universal doesn't have that many franchise properties. If they get X-Men/FF, they're going to keep them and milk them for all they're worth. At the end of the day, I believe this is mostly about who gets the lion-share of Hulu.
HannibalLecter
HannibalLecter - 6/7/2018, 2:00 PM
@Battabing - Then again they must realize that doing a good cbm is not easy, and if they fail at the B.O. they could face huge losses like WB, maybe they could pull it out but maybe they will want to play safe and sell them properties to Marvel at a very high price.
Origame
Origame - 6/7/2018, 2:05 PM
@Battabing - Considering Hulk, I could see them making a deal similar to Hulk and Spider-Man where they are given permission to use the characters for crossover stuff.
SimpleeComplex
SimpleeComplex - 6/7/2018, 2:16 PM
@Battabing - but then they have to put in work and make a good product eg: good CBM's in order to make money off of FF and the mutants right? Universal/Comcast or whoever is so confident they can put out better CBM's than Marvel (or lesser extent Fox). What you think?
SimpleeComplex
SimpleeComplex - 6/7/2018, 2:17 PM
@HannibalLecter - exactly my thinking. To make a return on their investment they have to actually make successful CBM's worth the properties.
