A couple days ago, a short-list was unveiled for a "side-kick" role alongside Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, in Marvel's highly-anticipated Avengers Movie. On that short-list, it included actresses familiar with director Joss Whedon, Morena Baccarin, Cobie Smulders, Jessica Lucas and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. And now according to the ever-reliable Deadline:

I'm hearing that Cobie Smulders has emerged as the front runner for the role of SHIELD Agent Maria Hill in the Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers and that a deal could be done before the weekend is out.


In the comics, Maria Hill is considered the ruthless interim executive director of SHIELD, and has appeared in several issues alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes. And as for Cobie Smulders, 28, shes most know for her role in How I Met Your Mother.

And commencing filming in April, Smulders is set to join Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Clark Gregg, and Kevin Pennington, when The Avengers assembles May 4, next year in 3D!

WTF? I really expected Morena Baccarin to be his favorite out of the bunch. THIS IS AN EPIC FAIL!!

I call bullshit on this one. I'm almost certain that Joss will give Morena the role. She's too perfect. And he's worked with her before.

Agreed. Morena would hafta have REALLY sucked in order for her to not get the role. I don't know who the [frick] Cobie Smulders is or what qualifications she has.

What's irritating to me is the fact that everyone's so gung-ho for Morena Baccarin as Maria Hill which seems to come exclusively from their having the same hair... Honestly, if she'd kept her hair long, how many people do you think would be behind her for Maria Hill...? I do think that Smulders would be better for a not-Maria Hill character, but she's a pretty good actress.

I Personally think He should save Baccarin for Wasp...

Didn't really care who got the role, as long as it was well acted (unlike Scarlett's piss-poor Black Widow portrayal).

I hope she cuts her, though.

It's not even a massive role so I don't see why some of you are so up set didn't pretty much every one on this site Morena Baccarin for wasp. Smulders is great on How I Met Your Mother, but marvel ruined Maria Hill(if it is her) by making her Fury's assistant when in the comics the only reason she got the SHIELD gig was because she hated fury and wasn't part of his "inner circle", and didn't give a [frick] about super heroes but what ever you know I hope Smulders does a good job which I am sure she will

@ contrast - was just thinking the same thing, the main reason she looks like maria hill in that picture is the short hair and the dark lipstick, you give that to cobie smulders im sure she would look just as good. Also if you have watched how i met your mother, you would see she plays someone with a 'i dont give a damn an wont take shit from anyone' kinda attitude andloves guns, you take away the funny side to her characer and she is perfect.

the interesting part of this "news" is that Baccarin could be WASP!!!

I think Wheddon was searching for two characters with that short list, not just Maria Hill. ;)

Good for her if she does have the part. I can actually see her playing Maria Hill as well. I've actually never heard of her up until now, but it should be interesting to see how it plays out.

And yeah, if Morena Baccarin ended up not getting Maria Hill, then maybe she'll get the part of Wasp...

Morena Baccarin plays Anna in "V" which is pretty much the exact same thing as playing Maria Hill in the Avengers. However, if Morena ends up getting cast as Wasp, I'll be content. But I'm skeptical of Wasp even making an appearance in this.

Recall that Joe Manganiello and John Krasinski were reported to be the front-runners for Superman and Captain America, respectively. This is just another one of those sources that's claiming their favorite actor to be the lead choice for the role, probably with no facts or evidence to back up that claim.

Sorry but im lookig at photos of with more hair and i dont see it so much, besides she would be a brilliant wasp, and just cos she could play maria hill doesnt mean no one else could, like a i said cobie smulders dont take no shit in how i met your mother, she could pull this part off.

WOW a lot of you are going to be dissapointed because the Maria Hill you read in the comic's is not the one thats going to be appearing on the big screen why? well because there looking for Fury's "sidekick" AKA Fury's "bitch" so if you have ever read a comic book with maria hill in it you know that she does not like playing second fiddle to any one and especially NOT fury's so don't get too excited and I doubt Wheadon would want to give Baccarin such a small role in the movie but I am happy that Smulders got the role

From what I gather, Hill will be like Fury's second in command, but pretty much dislike him and hate his guts.

Sounds cool. Love her on How I Met Your Mother and it would be great to see her as part of a superhero movie. I would have loved to see her as Wonder Woman, but Maria Hill is cool also.

It actually makes sense since Cobie Smulder was actually Joss Whedon's top choice to play Wonder Woman, and he has found another tough bad ass character for her to play.

@indoraptor12 I don't what comic book your reading but the main reason why she got the role of SHIELD director was because she had no loyalty to Fury and was not part of her inner circle and she was never his 2nd in command. She was Starks second in command when he was director not fury, she doesn't even like Fury, It's not like I have problem with it I am happy Smulders is getting the role but its not going to be some massive role

@vinno to be honest I don't have a problem but with the way people are getting carried away well it might leave them kinda disappointed
