Five AVENGERS Comic Book Covers Which Would Make A Better Theatrical Poster

The Avengers poster released today has split opinion. Among the usual cries of, "EPIC!" there is the bitter taste of disappointment. Here are five comic book covers I believe would make for better posters had Marvel decided to translate these into live action.

While the majority of users here on CBM are fawning all over the new poster for The Avengers (find it HERE), I have to say I'm firmly in the thoroughly unimpressed camp. The proportions of the characters all look off and the way in which the actors are all awkwardly (and seemingly randomly) placed around the poster just makes it look like a complete and utter Photoshopped mess. Considering that the movie - now titled Avengers Assemble in the UK - is Marvel Studios' biggest yet, I really was hoping for something which would look impressive if put up on the wall. Hopefully they'll release something a little more like that before April, but for now, here are the five comic book covers which I think would have made for much better theatrical posters.

NEW AVENGERS #1 (2005)

This cover was used to launch a new team of Avengers after the team was "Disassembled" by Brian Michael Bendis. Featuring the likes of Spider-Man, Wolverine and Luke Cage, this may seem like an odd choice, but a live action version featuring the team from the upcoming movie could potentially make for one very striking poster, despite the fact that they're shrouded in shadow. Replace the anonymous lightning bolt with Loki and his alien army and this has the potential be one hell of a poster, although there is a little risk of it coming across as too generic if not handled in the right way.

ULTIMATES 2 #1 (2010)

A fair few of the characters on this cover - Giant Man, Wasp, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch - would obviously need to be removed, but it could still work. Of course, the major concern for the studio would more than likely be having a masked Chris Evans as Captain America at the forefront of the poster (while both Iron Man and Thor take flight in the background). However, if the Hulk was somehow incorporated into the image, there's no reason why the it couldn't be finished off with a nice shot of Stark Tower or even the Helicarrier to really make the images of the heroes pop.

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #1 - VARIANT (2012)

How perfect is this? Captain America is front and centre, while both Iron Man and Thor fly above and the Hulk looms in the background. Hawkeye and Black Widow fill out the poster by being either side of the heroes and while the American flag may be a little too patriotic for audiences outside of the US, replace it with a background similar to the one used in the poster released earlier today and we're all set. Captain America's shield being thrown towards the audience is nice touch, while they could probably even squeeze Nick Fury, Agent Coulson and Maria Hill in there somewhere.

THE AVENGERS #1 (1963)

Whether this would actually work is debatable. Regardless, Hawkeye and Black Widow could be left off altogether, with Captain America instead taking the place of Ant-Man and Wasp. Seeing the big four facing off against Tom Hiddleston's Loki (even if he is only seen from behind) would give audiences a clearer idea of the threat the team face in the film - the general audience should have no trouble remembering Loki's unique helmet from THOR - while also cementing The Avengers' status as a movie which features four of the world's biggest superheroes coming together in one epic team-up after their respective solo movies.

THE AVENGERS #4 (1964)

Replace Giant Man and Wasp with Hawkeye and Black Widow and that's that. Captain America's pose could do with being a little less peculiar looking, but seeing the heroes all in action would make for one breathtaking piece of imagery. Place the Hulk in the background and replace Namor with the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier and it would be just about perfect. Of course, this wouldn't really make for a better poster unless Marvel actually got all of the actors in at the same time. The recently released one-sheet and last year's X-Men: First Class posters prove that this is a look that just doesn't work if they're all just awkwardly photoshopped together.

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

RELEASE DATE: April 27, 2012. (UK) May 4th, 2012. (US)

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #1 is a lot like the first promo painted art they released.

It's hard to tell what they would look live with (what would most definitely be photoshopped) live action actors, but on composition and concept I agree.

Don't people realize the downfall of #2? It would have a close up of Captain America's helmet!

Seriously, though, how much can it cost to get some new photos of the actors rather than just piecemealing this stuff together? Get your head in the game, Marvel!

I definitely could imagine live-action versions of all of those covers. Avengers Assemble #1, Avengers #1 and #4 are my favourite. Good article Ror!

@JKM - I don't think people are asserting they're perfect, they just expect more from Marvel given their money, resources, and talent.

The last two would make fantastic posters if done right.

I like #3, but you've also really sold me on #5, I think it could work...and for the reasons you list, not just from a "gee, I remember that cover" nostalgia kind of thing.

Those covers are so comic booky they'd make laughable Cinema Posters! The dynamic perspective used in some of those are bordering on the physically impossible!

Only comic fanboys could every think up this crap and think its normal!

THE STUDIO ARE TRYING TO MARKET A MOVIE, NOT A DAMN COMIC BOOK!

You're type (comic Fanboy) is not the market they're selling to, they're selling to joe average on a worldwide scale. Fanboys do not figure in the plans except at the merchandise end! The need you and everybodies kids to buy the geeky merchandise, i.e toys!

We all know marvel are cheap when it comes to their films. Obviously that is carrying over into their marketing. At least they are real people this time instead of water color or crayola like past posters
TheStranger

New Avengers #1 is too dark, nothing good came out of the Ultimates, so that one is trash, Avengers #1 is lacking Cap, Hawkeye, and Black Widow, Avengers #4 has extra characters that aren't in the movie, and Avengers Assemble #1 isn't bad except it has nothing to do with what is actually happening in the movie beyond it being the avengers assembling, the movie poster is fine.

None of those are too comic booky. Just look at some of the best movie posters of all time.

All kinds of crazy perspectives, but GOOD COMPOSITION. That's the problem with new poster. Bad composition.

@Gaston: Yours looks better than the actual poster

That second poster, the Ultimates...has terrible scale. Thor looks like Ant Man and Wasp. All sorts of effed on that one.

Look at how great this poster is, and its all kinds of comic booky. This would look retro in today's theaters, but still good.

Don't get me wrong, I actually like this poster, there are some better choices that could have been made though. I loved Stark Tower and the Quinjet included in it though. But Cap should have been up with Thor and Iron Man. Nick Fury didn't really need to be in there, although he is a draw because he's well Samuel L. Jackson. Still I thought most of it looked great. Wish I had all the images that Marvel has. I would make one awesome poster!

Some of these Nolanites are hilarious. Anytime there's any article that has a unpopular subject of THE AVENGERS, they have a field day with with and exaggerate the criticism.

Don't be mad cause THE AVENGERS are doing something for comic book movies that NO OTHER CBM has done for the genre....EVER.

Hmmmmm, I would choose both 3 and 4, too. I'm leaning more towards the third one, though. That'll be cool to see. Not sure where they can put Nick, Agent Coulson, and Maria Hill, though. I wonder if they'll even make a motion poster for The Avengers. They can have all of the Avengers running towards the audience, with Cap getting ready to throw his shield, Thor and Iron-Man flying towards the audience, Hawkeye shooting his bows and Black Widow shooting her guns, and last, but not least, Hulk jumping towards the audience. *Sigh* That'll be freaking cool as hell. :D

@Gaston - Oooooooh, awesome looking poster you made there, dude. Did you make anymore? :)

Stay EPIC, my friends!!
