Jeremy Renner On Hawkeye: Classic or Ultimate?

Jeremy Renner On Hawkeye: Classic or Ultimate?

Jeremy Renner has some ideas about where he would like to take the character of Hawkeye in Joss Whedon's The Avengers.

Jeremy Renner took the time to talk with MTV News (via telephone) from the set of Mission Impossible in Dubai. While they discussed many topics (some of which have already been reported here) they did touch on some new Avengers information.

On when he finally tries on Hawkeye's costume for the first time...

"That's when I'll feel, 'Oh, I'm really going to have to start working out."

On researching Clint Barton (aka) Hawkeye...

"I don't know a lot about the Hawkeye character, but I've been digging around a bit and there are things from his past I think I could play out physically. I have a few ideas of certain styles of training I want to do for that character. Bow-and-arrow stuff is the obvious one. I think I'm going to have to do some lifting for that. I'm curious to hear what Joss and the Marvel guys think about when I run a few ideas by them."

On which version of Clint Barton's origins would be brought to the big screen, classic criminal turned hero or Ultimate government agent...

"We didn't get into any of that. What I do know, I can't really discuss, because who know if it's still true — he could take it a whole other direction. I'm just as curious as you are."

Hawksblueyes: While I am a classic Hawkeye fan all the way, I wouldn't mind a mixture of the two characters as long as we get classic, smart ass Hawkeye's personality.

I like neither the classic nor ultimate costumes. I'd perfectly be open to something new.

Character wise, I don't go for the Ultimate line usually, but this time I'm going to do so.

@Ibz

Don't worry. A few months ago he confirmed that they aren't using the "classic" Hawkeye costume, much to the chargin of a lot of fanboys here. He said they're looking for something "more reality based".

i would love it to be the classic, but it'll probably be a bit of both.

I hope they go classic, and Renner as Hawkeye is a perfect casting. I think this guy is going to bring a level of dedication that this movie deserves.

Muderus@ That would be cool to see Barton as Ronin but we will have to wait for a House of M story line before we can see a Bartonized Ronin. That would be sick though!

Votes for the Ultimates version, don't spend time with all the villain stuff from the original book. Just have him as a Black Ops agent. Boom straight to the point so we don't have to have half the film explaining who he is.

That classic costume will never see the light of a movie set! It really only works in the print medium. The Ultimate version is probably more like what we will see, although they will probably avoid covering his face as much as that costume does--he does need to act, after all. He may have goggles, but I doubt that he will have the bottom half of his face covered. His mask isn't as much of its own character as Rorschach's was, for example...

It would take the same amount of time explaining either origin, if they felt the overwhelming need to explain it. I for one, don't quite understand exactly how much "back story" people think these characters need. Every one of us watch many movies each year without a "back story" on each and every character in the movie. All we need to know about a character is what is directly pertinant to the film.

I agree with Hawks - too much backstory ties up too much film time and no one likes a movie that's all exposition and not enough action.

A mixture of both costumes with the 616 personality (and a little of the black ops background from The Ultimates thrown in for good measure) will all add up to the perfect Hawkeye. An amazing actor like Jeremy Renner playing the character is just the icing on the cake. :) Good stuff HAWKS!

I want a fully Purple & Blue w/tunic n'crotch towel.

I can take them blackening (for stealth) it some or hardening some for armor.
But still purple/blue hues. That's Hawkeye and it will work!

should do it like they did with thor...a mix between the two is ideal...

hahahah... I knew way way way ahead of time it will be based solely on whatever tweaked out unrecognizable shit passes for Hawkeye in the Ultimate U.

"cause purple is just sooooo unREALISTic" and so are bows and arrows! And so is blond hair! And code names! yeah!

As a matter of fact I am quite sure that when they get done with the character of Hawkeye, there won't be anything of him left at all.
He'll end being some kind of boring SHIELD sniper or some shit. Which is of course probably what most of you guys want in the first place, which is sickening.

I honestly beleive that with all the Avengers the studio and Marvel had to choose from, they would not have picked Hawkeye as a member for the first Avengers movie unless they planned on bringing classic Hawkeye to the screen. He is way too interesting a character. The would have left him alone if they didn't want the fan favorite.

Uniform means nothing when you're talking Hawkeye, he has had dozens of them. It's the personality thats important with him and I think Marvel will not dissappoint.

The #1 issue here for me is that he use a bow. As far as origin goes, either his true 616 origin, or I can get with Intruder in his postulation. Costume, again 616 all the way, but a few things I'll let slide; the mask will obviously be altered so I'm already accepting that, the most important factor here is that there IS a mask of some sort and the color scheme include the purple, as it's always been an identifier in the comics.

Juggernaut, ouch! but partly true. I am very afraid of the sniper thing. I would almost guarantee that he will at least use one at some point, among other various armaments. Though it does have it's basis in reality, I can't abide it. Hawkeye hand crafts his own bows, the bow and the marksmanship are his talent and the combination is what makes him unique. So if he isn't an Archer in the flic, I'll be puking in the urinal next to you at the cinema.

The Myth: Whedon and Renner both have already confimred he will sport the bow. Whedon went so far as to say it's his gig or something to that effect.

It's a date, Myth.

lol

Don't get me wrong. There's still a lot to love in The Avengers movie. It's just I have had this feeling all along that Hawkeye wouldn't turn out well.

Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 11/22/2010, 1:16 PM
We usually see eye to eye Jugs but I think you're wrong on this one. I think the studio and Marvel knew what they wanted out of Hawkeye way before Whedon was even attetched to the film.

Hawks may be involved with SHIELD but there is no reason to have the complete version of Ultimate Hawkeye in this movie. He has Zero personality and appeal. They would have used another character before bringing in "Hit Man" Hawkeye.

the Hancock movie made me realize how much the leather generic SH suit sucks- but the Ultimate Hawkeye suit had alot of variation - its funny how we let him slide for not knowing DAMN thing about his character- bcuz its a C-Lister i guess

Juggernaut: Once again, we agree. Your first post here hits everything I'm worried about with Hawkeye's character in the upcoming Avengers film.

Personally, I won't mind if they tweak the classic costume (maybe change the mask some) or use a darker shade of purple, but I do NOT want to see it completely desecreated and mocked like what that filthy CRAPtain America film is doing with his outfit.

I agree with several others here that it is important to keep Clint's smart-ass personality. The details of the origin are a little less important, as long as Hawkeye acts like Hawkeye. His personality has always been one of the things I most like about the character.

Renner coming into the mix for this movie is one of the elements I am most excited about, the guy is really good at what he does. I was a little suprised he took the role actually, I think RDJ has brought some cred to the whole marvel movie universe.
Ultron8872
Ultron8872 - 11/22/2010, 7:14 PM
I wouldn't mind seeing a mix.

Classic wise-cracking Hawkeye, former con, given a second chance by Fury, now working as a SHIELD special agent like the Black Widow.

I'd like to see him as a supporting character instead of an actual Avenger in the first movie.

The movie needs to focus on Thor, IM, Cap, and Hulk (plus maybe Ant-Man/Giant-Man and the Wasp- fingers crossed).
