Louis Leterrier Discusses Hulk's Involvment in The Avengers

The Incredible Hulk's director, Louis Leterrier, talks about Hulk's possible involvment in the planned 2012 Avengers film.

This from MTV's Splash Page...

"He's not really a villain," said the Leterrier. "If Hulk is a villain, that's too simplistic. What's great about Marvel is that it's never good guy and bad guy, hero and villain — it's more complex than that. Hulk could be in trouble and chased by Iron Man, no problem. But I don't think he would end up the villain, killing people and being villainous of his own free will."

"In the Avengers stories when he was the villain, he was always controlled by Loki or someone else, and it was never of his own doing."

And here's an interesting comment from the article...

"When you put Thor in Tony Stark's universe, it's fantastic," he continued. "Then you add the anti-superhero that is Hulk, who's like, 'Leave me alone, I don't want to be a superhero,' and you tell him, 'You have to come with us or you have to fight us,' and then on top of all this you have Captain America, a gung-ho super-soldier who starts doubting himself and his system... and that's fantastic. You have all these interactions, and that's just the beginning. Then you have the villains and the enormous potential of these action pieces."

MarvelFreshman: Did you guys notice that he said, "Captain America doubting himself and his system". Wonder where they came from? Maybe this could be tidbits of info for the actual Avengers film. And speaking of The Incredible Hulk, I just looked at it yesterday again with the speakers blasting in my ears. That movie is GOLD. The story and action balanced so well. I really wish it did better at the box office. I actually like it more than the first Iron Man film. If it weren't for Robert Downey Jr. showing up at the of "Incredible Hulk," in theaters, I wouldn't have seen Iron Man AT ALL. I thought he was just another Spider-Man (whom I hate by the way). When I went to see it, they really had me fooled. It blew me away. WOW, I think I'm getting a little off topic there.

I'm glad Hulk isn;t the villain, that's just a stupid idea and it would make Hulk one dimensional. As Louis said, Hulk is a complex character.

Have Loki as the villain, have him control Hulk to prompt the Avengers together and then Hulk joins them to stop an Asgardian invasion.

so is this Leterrier saying that he wants to be the first person Marvel calls to direct Avengers?
that would be MONUMENTAL!!!!!!!!

"a gung-ho super-soldier who starts doubting himself and his system"

I sure hope they don't go for the moody anti-hero angle with him. That is not Cap! He's an optimist!

Great CBM article, it should be up in main instead of the stupid Leno and Conan piece.

Awsome find. Sounds like it will be good a mixture of both the Ultimate and regular universe Avengers origin.

Outside of Cap it sounds good. He isn't gung ho, he's extremely confident there is a huge difference.

I hope both Hulk and Letterier are involved in the Avengers some how. This group of movies has potential to be one of, if not THE best, series in a very very long time.

good find MF!

Leterrier has made it clear he wants to direct the Avengers. Since all the solo movies are building towards the team up, Hulk controlled by Loki is going to be what pulls these heroes together, imo. It seems pretty clear to me that is the direction they are heading

I think what He means is that when Cap is in the Future He's all moody from reminiscing the past.

I hear ya grif. Ultron is the way to go. With Vision. Make Vision likeable then kill him off with Ultron. That'd be cool.
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 1/21/2010, 2:19 PM
I think Ultron would be better suited for 2nd Avengers movie. First one is going to have a lot of the team getting to know each other. And if we are lucky, introducing us to the Pyms. You need Hank to build Ultron anyway

The Incredible Hulk was amazing and it gave the gitty fan boy chills that i got when i saw Spider-Man 2 when Harry found the Green Goblin lair. the same thing happened when Tony Stark appeared. this is what comic book movies should be all about. cliffhangers of crossing over to other stories or putting heroes together. since their rebooting Spider-Man they should have him try to join up with the Fantastic 4 since i heard their doing a reboot of them as well.

BIGBMH - 1/21/2010, 3:45 PM
I'm glad he doesn't want the Hulk turned into a villain. It would really defeat the purpose of the character.

bring in the leader, and some more abomination.ohhh and ultron and while your at it let louis leterrier direct it then do a sequel to hulk,AND a sequel to avengers hes really good director, and i think he deserves it.i mean the guy is excited about it and that is what makes great movies.

TIH didn't do better at the box office because it wasn't really a good movie.

It had good action scenes, but the acting sucked and the story was pretty generic and lame. Probably Edward Norton's most "one-note" performance to date.

Not a big fan of Leterrier though. He's kind of the "French Brett Ratner" to me. Can't think of one really good movie he's done, yet he keeps getting mentioned for big movies.

LEEE, Some Hulk-Buster action would be EPIC!

Ryden, If they go with the original story of the formation of the Avengers, it came about with Hulk seemingly the villain, but it turned out to be Loki manipulating him. Letterier's reference is to Avengers #1. This happened before Cap joined the team in issue #4, but for all purposes, I sincerely hope that is the route they take of sorts. Having Loki as the villain for both Thor and Avengers flics though would be redundant, so something would have to amp up, otherwise I'd like to see a straight from the pages adaptation, which would make Hulk a... psuedo-villain? for a portion of the film.

Grif and Tobuttica, I disagree... for a first film. However, I can't think of a better sequel than Ultron and Vision.

Nicholsy, Including Abomination might just be that 'amp up' I referred to in responding to Ryden, though I think it would be extremely naive of Ross to tap Blonsky a second time around. Instead, maybe Loki manipulates Blonsky and the sighting's are misinterpreted as being the Hulk, causing SHIELD and friends to track down Banner, Epic fight with Hulk ensues before some realization is met and we move to a climax... in a nutshell.

Pym, I hope so. It won't be Avengers without them... you, lol

Am I the only one who was disappointed in "the Incredible Hulk"? Never once did I believe that the CGI was real. It looked like an incredibly detailed video game.

Since we're getting Loki in Thor I really hope they don't use him in Avengers. Same goes for Abomination. I don't want to see villians reused and abused like Magneto was.

For the time being I'm more concerned about Thor and Cap doing well. If either of those are bombs we might not get an Avengers movie. Creating a single film universe is very ambitious and could be awesome. Outside of the Viewaskewniverse I can't think of another example.
