Marvel Looking At Movies "More As Brands And Less As Films"!

Paul Gitter, President of Consumer Products for Marvel, talks about how the phrase "Avengers Assemble" will be used on products and hints that Marvel are working towards something BIG in 2017...

Here are some of the most interesting excerpts from the interview undertaken by Advertising Age (via Bleeding Cool) where Gitter talks about how Marvel are planning on marketing their products now that things are building up to the release of The Avengers in 2012.

"A full line of action figures, vehicles and role-playing items from toy maker Hasbro; arts and crafts products from Crayola; die-cast toy vehicles and play sets from Maisto; and footwear from Brown Shoe. Additional licensees include Fruit of the Loom, Kids Headquarters, AME and Jem Sportswear."

"You're going to see 'Avengers Assemble' logos and icons take more prominent positions. On a lot of the packaging you're going to see everywhere, Marvel does tie back into 'The Avengers,' and the umbrella platform we have set up."

"The big play here is that Marvel is really looking at our films more as brands and less as films. The goal here is to become more of a household name similar to Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson. We want Marvel to take a much greater position in the minds of the consumer when they are thinking about our properties."

However, the most interesting thing that the article mention was this:

"He alluded to a plan in development pegged to 2017, but declined to offer details."

Could that be a second Avengers movie? The timeline would more than likely fit especially as Marvel will probably release new Captain America, Iron Man and Thor movies after 2012 along with new characters like Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and Black Panther. Be sure to share your thoughts about this in the usual place!

Civil War movie!!:)

Also, "more as brand less as movies". WTF is that supposed to mean? They are movies you corporate dick! You might want to package everything into nice marketable little wrappers but a film is a film no matter how many action figures it sells. Anyway, as long as the movies are good the suits can think of them as frakking donuts for all I care.

This is one of those rare opportunities that I actually have a chance to get in on the start of posting and I have nothing to say. I guess really I'm less concerned about The Avengers than I am about the Spider-Man reboot. Honestly, I have complete faith that The Avengers movie and all others associated with it will be great, but the Spidey reboot lies in mystery; I don't want any more of the same there.

As for "more as brands," that's the kind of bull shit that ruined the Star Wars prequels. You don't make a movie to sell merchandise, you do it to tell your story and to impress the fans.

Tea@ lol.

Disney needs to flex its $Billion$ muscles and get some characters back. Especially F4 and SS. That way Civil war is more doable and can run into a WW Hulk movie.

Also for those interested the new Avengers micro-ep's out. Just go to http://disney.go.com/xd/avengers/videos/ to watch it. There's no copyright block on there either, for those of us outside the U.S.A. :)

Actually 2017 may be more in line with the 3rd Avengers movie. I think all of this can only be leading up to The Infinity Korvac Civil Gauntlet story line.

I also agree with Ror, it doesn't matter how many action figures you sell, a film is still going to be a film at the end of the day.

Oi vey. That brands vs films statements. What to make of that?

I hope what they mean is that they are not confining their properties to films, but thinking of a broader scope of product. That would mean that they just want to make sure all the products share the right common threads and hit the market at the right time. It would hope fully NOT mean that they are going to screw with the talent the hire to direct and write to get movies with more merchandising possibilities but possibly lower quality. FINGERS CROSSED!

Oh, and I want to see Secret Wars before Infinity Gauntlet and Civil War.

Personally, I'm thinking it'll either be another Avengers movie or possible even another team franchise like the Defenders! As much as I'd love to see "Civil War" on the big screen, I dont see it happenning. For a start, they've not introduced enough characters, and it would have to be about 6 hours long to fit everything in with a HUGE budget as well! :P Marvel will probably spend the four years between 2012 and 2017 building the already established franchises and introducing a load of new characters for an even more epic sequel to The Avengers!
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 10/4/2010, 6:26 AM
It'll be interesting to see what they do with the "Avengers Assemble" stuff. Kids clothes and wallets or something more? When it comes to making Marvel a household name, I would have thought the success of their recent and upcoming movies will do that regardless of merchandise. (which will more than likely be aimed at kids anyway) Either way, "More As Brands And Less As Films" really makes no sense unless it's some PR mumbo jumbo I dont understand, lol!

DLM: Yeah, I completely forgot about the Hulk actually! He definitely needs another film regardless...it's a pity that the first one wasnt successdful enough to convince Marvel to release another one alongside Iron Man 2 this year. At least I assume that's why they didnt!

I: That's cool man - cant beat Alex Ross! It's just a pity you cant see more of the Vision in that picture.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/4/2010, 6:27 AM
Nah it won't be Civil War, just wishful thinking! Although they could do a version of it without certain characters. I wouldn't mind that.
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 10/4/2010, 6:29 AM
I don't think they would do Civil War for one simple reason. Marvel isn't sinking all this time and energy into making the public familiar with their characters to turn them against each other.

If Joe Blow Mr. Public watches IM and then Captain America, he grows into a huge fan of both characters. Then place the two characters in The Avengers and he becomes a bigger fan. Now, if you turn them against each other for a Civil War movie, Joe Public has to side with one or the other, which is fine. That is, until the next individual movie comes out. Your next Cap and IM movies are going to suffer greatly because you turn half of the average consumer against the character by making him an enemy of the other one.

Josh, I think you're shooting too low with just another Avengers movie in 2017. It seems as though it implies something more business-oriented, like maybe purchasing rights back from FOX or something along those lines? (He was discussing the Marvel brand and all, and that sure falls under those lines.) That's just a guess obviously but my point is that announcing another Avengers movie is hardly anything secretive. Perhaps we should be thinking of things more along the business/marketing end. And hey-- maybe I'm completely wrong and it is just that simple.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 10/4/2010, 8:20 AM
I actually believe they will attempt either Civil War or Infinity Gauntlet. I believe they would go for Infinity Gauntlet more so because it allows them to fill the movie with characters that are less known and not worry about who they do and don't own the rites too. Also as MetalHead said they could be able to buy back the rites and introduce a massive marvel universe film.
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 10/4/2010, 8:27 AM
ThaMessenger07: Buying back the rights to their characters just so they can place them in the background of a movie crowded with heroes doesn't make much financial sense at all.
MetalHead
MetalHead - 10/4/2010, 8:39 AM
Hawksblueyes:

True, but that's not what either of us were implying. The reason I initially brought up the suggestion here is that the article is spefically discussing Marvel as a brand and their wish to make Marvel (even more of) a household name like Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson. What better way to do that than by getting back some of their most recognizable franchises like X-Men and the Fantastic 4, among others?

Again, the fact that the Marvel brand is the focal point of the article is the only reason I even suggested it because THEY are the ones telling us that it's on their mind. I took it a step further and tried to use what might be their logic in accomplishing that goal. And again, I could be completely wrong but given the context of the article, it doesn't seem entirely out of the question since expanding the Marvel brand is on their agenda.

they could be rebooting spider man so they could eventualy line him up to do a project with the rest of the universe. i.e. Secret war or Civil war. the way the other spidy movies were they made it seem like he was the only superhero, there was no mention of the Fantastic 4 even though they were in the same city, the Avengers cross over every 5 min. so mabey they wont have Fury show up, but they might have a Bugle cover with iron man on it, just so the option was open to cross over.
LucasMend
LucasMend - 10/4/2010, 8:52 AM
prolly is the Infinity Gauntlet?
Well I would love CIVIL WAR, buttt, cant have it without spider-man, fantastic four and x-men :(
Nice find @Josh!

MetalHead - 10/4/2010, 9:02 AM
Another reason I tend to lean towards the idea that it may involve acquiring the film rights of their characters is the fact that Marvel knows films are where the money is (and the products that are sold as a result), especially considering that money in actual comic books has been on the decline. From a strictly business perspective, it's the logical direction to go. AND, increased interest in Marvel characters due to blockbuster films will lead to the comic book industry moving back in the right direction. It basically protects their investment. They created these characters, only to watch other companies cash in on them. Add to this the fact that Disney has Marvel's back and it makes too much sense.

i can't see how a sequel to Avengers would be the BIG deal. Everyone already expects that to happen. and a sequel wouldn't be any bigger news than Avengers.

Knowing that all these cosmic artifacts are appearing in Thor, I'm thinking it'll be some kind of big crossover movie, like Infinity Gauntlet, or Civil War.

Although they'll have to introduce an assload of characters to do either of them justice.

JLA vs AVENGERS!!!!! in 2017!!!

I really hope DC & Marvel are secretly in communication on something like this. By 2017 the Avengers trilogy should be finished and hopefully we'll already of seen two JLA films....What is the ULTIMATE comic book experience? Once you have all the main heroes in each universe team up amongst each other respectively, the only logical next step is to have the DCU face off or team up with the Marvel U!

PLEASE DO THIS!

I'd be happy with Atlantis Attacks, Kree/Skrull War or Infinity Gauntlet. It all depends on what characters they begin to introduce....

Gauntlet could be tough w/o a more expansive universe to work off of, primarily involving the Silver Surfer and Adam Warlock. As long as Fox has the rights for SS then expect any movie involving sharing of him to be tied up in litigation.
DLM
DLM - 10/4/2010, 10:04 AM
113@ As unlikely as that would be, a team up would be the only way. neither studio would agree on a who would win scenario in a versus movie. Just look at the fiasco they had doing the comic version.
MetalHead
MetalHead - 10/4/2010, 10:09 AM
Here's hoping, 80sFace. It's hard to stay objective on the subject because as fans we obviously want it to happen, but first and foremost this is still a business and if it doesn't make sense financially, it won't happen.

(a) FOX needs to do the math and decide that taking x amount is a better deal for them than continuing to make movies, which they may since movies are still a gamble and all it takes is a terrible one for the franchise to lose interest and a ton of value. They may agree that selling high is wise.

(b) Marvel needs to do the math and come to the conclusion that the price they pay for the rights can be more than made up for, and considering their link with Disney, this is entirely possible. Just think about the other factors such as X-Men Disney rides, etc., like DC has with Six Flags. It's way more to them than just wanting to be able to put Wolverine in a movie with the Hulk, for example.

It's definitely something that could possibly make sense for both sides from a business standpoint, assuming FOX doesn't want to be a douche about it, but this is business and a lot of money we're talking about here. Marvel can do way more with FOX's characters than FOX can. They'd need to come to common ground on a deal AND Marvel would need to determine that they can still turn the investment into a significant profit after the cost to acquire the rights.
