There's no getting around the fact that Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest filmmakers of all-time, but his comments about the Marvel Cinematic Universe probably won't sit well with some.
During a recent interview (via
Screenrant), the director was asked about Marvel movies and made it clear that not only does he not view them as real films, but he also doesn't think the actors in them are capable of giving worthwhile performances. Clearly, he didn't get chance to watch
Black Panther!
"I don’t see them. I tried, you know?" he admitted. "But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being."
Scorsese is obviously entitled to his opinion, but these remarks come across as pretty ignorant and very out of touch. The performances actors give in superhero movies can be every bit as impressive as any other genre, while the technology the director is using in The Irishman to de-age actors - which has been ridiculed by many - is something Marvel Studios has perfected.
Sadly, it seems like Scorsese is another superhero movie hating, out of touch director, resentful that the genre is finding so much success (while something like The Irishman might not).
What do you guys think?
