Guy Pearce Talks About Being Offered Roles In Batman Begins And Daredevil!

The actor reveals that he was offered a role in Batman Begins, but NOT as the Caped Crusader, and says that he turned down the role of Daredevil back in 2003 as CBM's just do not interest him...

In a recent interview with Vulture, the actor was quizzed about his past links with comic book movies, and was quizzed in particular about being offered roles in both Batman Begins and Daredevil. Below are a few excerpts from that interview, but be sure to follow the link over to the site to read a lot more!

So there’s this persistent Internet rumor that you were offered the role of Batman in Batman Begins...

I absolutely wasn’t. Chris Nolan flew me to London to talk about one of the other roles in it, ‘cause he sort of had this idea of going a different kind of way. But it didn’t happen, and I don’t know why exactly, and that’s cool.

Can you say what the role was?

It was Liam Neeson’s role. And there was talk about having the mentor be the same age as Christian Bale, rather than be an older mentor. But maybe they tossed the idea around and other people went, No, that’s not gonna work.

Your name was also associated with 2003’s Daredevil, and came up again when they started talking about a Daredevil reboot last year.

Oh, well I was offered the first Daredevil, yeah.

And you turned it down.

Yeah. It wasn’t really my — I mean, I wasn’ t really sort of — I don’t know. Comic-strip stuff isn’t really my cup of tea, really.

I'm a big fan of his. Memento was intense. I could have seen him play an straighter Joker but that's in hindsight...and we ended up with a better version anyway. He could be a good black mask but that's by the by. Credit to him for not jumping on the bandwagon although I'm not sure there was a bandwagin in '03...

That sucks. If Nolan could somehow convince him to take a role in Man of Steel, it would make my damn day. He would be fantastic as Lex or Brainiac.

I really really hope they get Michael C. Hall to play Daredevil next time around.

I am not real sure Hall would go for it, but except for a definite height difference between the actor and the character I would think that it would be an awesome fit.

Hmm, "Comic-Strip stuff" isn't his cup of tea huh, I guess "The Time Machine" IS more realistic (insert rolling eyes here).

Whatever, he is still a good actor, but is only hurting himself by cutting out a whole genre of film that has been on the rise for the past two decades.

Hmm, that's interesting. I knew he was offered the role of Daredevil back in 2003 but not the Batman Begins one...

I for one thought he would of made a brilliant Commissioner Gordon! Although Gary Oldman does an amazing job.

CBMs may still be "on the rise" as you all say, but they are still thought of as mindless fun action movies (which almost all of them are)so i can see why an actor of his caliber wouldn't be into being in CBMs. He was more willing to be in Nolan's movie because Nolan has made a comic book movie into a piece of art with amazing award winning acting and great depth.
When you usually see a great actor in a CBM they are just doing it to take a break and have fun, unlike Nolan's movies where all of the actors are passionate about their roles and bringing life to them.

I was almost certain he was gonna say he almost played Jonathan Crane. Neeson worked perfectly for Nolan's version of Ras, so everything worked out.

That's too bad, he's one of my favourite actors. It may not be that he's not interested in CBM's, it may be that he just didn't like the Daredevil script. And good on him for turning it down, that movie set Affleck back 5years in the movies business until he pulled himself out of it single-handedly with Gone Baby Gone and The Town.

I do think it would've been cool to have Pearce as Ra's though, it would have been an interesting face-off at the end of the movie.

He would have kicked some ass as Daredevil though.

Maybe, he'd even be a good Batman?

I've always thought he'd be a perfect Gambit ala the 90's show. Not like the gay version in that Wolverine movie. He was fantastic in Memento, and I'd certainly like to see him in another collaboration with Nolan. Like xXkrytoniteXx said, maybe in the Superman movie. That would be cool.

Ha. He didn't say he was too good for these movies, he said they aren't his cup of tea. It happens every time someone says something that doesn't make the superhero genre out to be the greatest thing ever, then fans make the person out to be an asshole, douche, etc. Gotta love it.

Guy Pierce is the English Keanu Reeves (yeah, I said it - who wants some?)! The man's 'acting' is about as nuanced as a Tomahack missile! I for one am GLAD he didn't land ANY CBM roles!

Ass. He's a great actor. How anyone can doubt that after watching his work in Memento, The Proposition, LA Confidential and even a tiny role in The Road beffudles me. And It sounded like he would have taken the Ras role if they went that way. Not a big CBM fan? Shame, he;s still frakkin awesome.

He was wise not to take the offer. His name woulda been attached to that horrid piece of a film.

They need to reboot that franchise, cast someone who makes sense, make the origin story better and stick more closely to the source material. Also, a smart director with Goyer on the writing would do this character justice.

Ror - This is another 'agree-to-disagree'. Case in point - 'The Time Machine' and 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. Two of my FAVORITE books were absolutely RUINED by Pearce's performances in them - he TOTALLY phoned them in! I will admit, I am a personally bruised by them (which probably colors my opinion). Now that I think about it, he was good in 'The Hurt Locker' and hysterical in 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' (I haven't seen 'Memento'). Okay, my bad - he CAN be a good actor... I just wish he was consistent!

Look I know he’s a great actor, but my opinion of him will always tainted by his early work as a teenager with a bad mullet in “Neighbours” that I use to see down at my local shopping mall & the fact that I can quite literally look out my window & see the studio where they still make that god awful show doesn’t help. I know it’s childish, but it would have ruined the illusion of Begins for me.
