HARLEY QUINN: BIRDS OF PREY Trailer Touts Early Digital Release As Director Cathy Yan Thanks Fans

Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey put the spotlight on the DC Universe's biggest badasses in an attempt to make it clear that the future is female for superhero movies. Disappointingly, a lot of film fans failed to flock to theaters to watch Harley's fabulous emancipation last month, but we're going to get the opportunity to relive that much sooner than expected on Digital!

Warner Bros. has made that decision in response to the coronavirus pandemic, and with upcoming films being delayed left, right, and center, it gives us something to watch at home.

Now, a kick-ass new trailer has been released by the studio along with comments from Cathy Yan which see the director thank fans for supporting the idea of Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey being released next week. A lot of people obviously missed it the first time around, so they're now going to have the chance to catch up with Harley's antics while potentially self-isolating.

The news has just broken that this year's Glastonbury Festival is being postponed and that was planned for the end of June. Why is it relevant to you, our beloved CBM audience? Well, if organisations are pushing back events taking place then, don't be too shocked if Wonder Woman 1984 does the same!

Click HERE for more Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey news from CBM!

You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.

Honestly, I loved this film. The only criticism I really had was Cassandra Cain being anything but Cassandra Cain

@MikeyL - i found it a fine break from the a typical superhero movies out there. But yeah, i dont get why they even bothered with Cassandra.

@MikeyL - I really loved it too. I had so much fun watching it. Don’t really know much about Cassandra Cain but what I do know I can understand the criticism. That being said, I really liked the actress. She did great for her first role. Definitely nailed what they were going for.

This movie was needesly convaluted. And I feel the r rating could have been easily avoided. Black mask never needed to cut off a familys face, or the pointless amount of gore. It was also visually unpleasent. Still I hope cathy yan does more stuff.

From the director that hates men and wants to “smash the patriarchy” no thanks....

@AnthonyVonGeek - What has the patriarchy ever done for you that you're so defensive of it?

I haven't seen it, so I'm not commenting on the movie itself. But I do think it's actually healthy to see some comic book movies brought back down to earth a little. With the exception of Snyder's trilogy. the Amazing Spider-Man, and Fox franchises (which may have taught the wrong lessons, but I'll get to that in a minute), I feel like Hollywood has been on this superhero sugar high for the last ten years. Anything new and shiny could make hefty profit as long as it was appropriately budgeted.

The common thread through nearly all of the failures were an utterly disastrous franchise mismanagement (WB/Sony/Fox), a terrible conception of the franchise's tone (Snyder/Webb/Kinberg), and that every one of those franchises were reimaginings or reboots of characters pretty well-established in the general culture. (And yes, all of those contributed to the failing, absolutely, and I think you can point to the Incredible Hulk for a Marvel film facing those same problems that suffered similarly.)

Ultimately, I think it created the impression that if you avoid those traps in your superhero movie, you were guaranteed a box office hit. You pretty much have to go back to Green Lantern to find a cape movie that didn't fall into that failing formula but also just fell flat because audiences didn't vibe with it (the way they seem not to have vibed with Birds of Prey).

Some may be tempted to call this a symptom of fatigue, but I think it's more accurately a maturation of the genre. A sign to studios that the gold rush is ending, even if there's still plenty of metal in the ground. Pretty soon, I hope, the message will be clear that you can't get rich anymore by stumbling through a comic property without putting in the hard work of franchise building and using the insights of the source material to actually tell some compelling story or engage some meaningful theme.

And also, even if you do everything right, you can still fail. Because there should always be an element of risk to this stuff, even if it's still an extremely safe mode of moviemaking.
