There have been persistent rumors that Chris Evans might be set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Steve Rogers (a trade report even claimed that he'd signed a new deal to reprise the role back in 2021), but there's been no sign of the original Sentinel of Liberty since his poignant final scene from Avengers: Endgame.
Rogers was mentioned in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but we still haven't actually learned what became of the older version of the hero who returned to bestow the mantle on Sam Wilson in the Infinity Saga Finale (we're going to assume he's not actually on the moon).
Evans has previously indicated that he'd be hesitant to revisit the character after bringing Steve's story to such a satisfying close, but during a new interview with GQ, the Ghosted actor seemed a little more enthusiastic about the prospect - although it doesn't sound like he's in any rush to pick up the shield again any time soon.
“Yeah, maybe. I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing. So, no time soon.”
There's been some speculation that Evans may show up in Captain America: Brave New World, but if he was ever going to return as Steve Rogers, we'd say either Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars are far more likely possibilities, as it would give him the opportunity to play a younger Variant of the character.
In the same interview, Evans revealed that he very nearly turned down the chance to join the MCU after already playing The Human Torch in 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four movies.
“I was really apprehensive about taking the role initially. I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty. You always end up questioning, Is this what I should be doing?…I just wasn’t sure if I was moving closer to myself or further away. And something inside me kept saying that I was getting further away— that something about this industry wasn’t healthy.”
