There have been persistent rumors that Chris Evans might be set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Steve Rogers (a trade report even claimed that he'd signed a new deal to reprise the role back in 2021), but there's been no sign of the original Sentinel of Liberty since his poignant final scene from Avengers: Endgame.

Rogers was mentioned in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but we still haven't actually learned what became of the older version of the hero who returned to bestow the mantle on Sam Wilson in the Infinity Saga Finale (we're going to assume he's not actually on the moon).

Evans has previously indicated that he'd be hesitant to revisit the character after bringing Steve's story to such a satisfying close, but during a new interview with GQ, the Ghosted actor seemed a little more enthusiastic about the prospect - although it doesn't sound like he's in any rush to pick up the shield again any time soon.

“Yeah, maybe. I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing. So, no time soon.”

There's been some speculation that Evans may show up in Captain America: Brave New World, but if he was ever going to return as Steve Rogers, we'd say either Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars are far more likely possibilities, as it would give him the opportunity to play a younger Variant of the character.

In the same interview, Evans revealed that he very nearly turned down the chance to join the MCU after already playing The Human Torch in 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four movies.

“I was really apprehensive about taking the role initially. I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty. You always end up questioning, Is this what I should be doing?…I just wasn’t sure if I was moving closer to myself or further away. And something inside me kept saying that I was getting further away— that something about this industry wasn’t healthy.”

“Never say never” especially when I can’t get work even when we weren’t on strike.

@TyrantBossMedia - don't even get me started on the strike. Now they're shaming people like Drew Barrymore for going back to doing her talk show even when it doesn't break the rules of the strike.

@Origame - She’s just trying to give her people work. Millionaires find it very easy to make non-millionaires not work.

@MarvelousMarty - His character's run was near perfect. He should stay away.

whats unhealthy about the industry and genre of CBM is the toxic nature of fans. they cant just simly dislike something fans threaten and attack everyone involved. i dont blame him if he doesnt want to risk the backlash if something is just not right about his return. there is no way honestly a return by him can live up to expectations since they have gone beyond being reasonable.

I would say a well written scene with old man Steve could work and not tarnish the legacy. Maybe Sam is still feeling uneasy about the mantle and Steve’s words help him to find his mojo. One of the great things about MCU Cap was that he had a level-headed perspective and actually changed other characters through his words.

A Cap cameo in Secret Wars or Kang Dynasty would literally be a cash grab moment. Sure it could serve the same purpose as what I listed above, but being in the inevitable cameo fest movies is the definition of cash grab.

I’d rather not see Evans as young Steve or Downey Jr as Tony again. They had good closure. If we get those characters in the multiverse saga at all, make it a variant with a different actor.

The ultimate insult is if they had Evans play a variant of Hydra Steve.

@mountainman - Can't do that. In DEI Disney you can't have a straight, white male giving motivation to a black male. That's why Sam had to get his encouragement from Isiah Bradley

@TyrantBossMedia - I was just speaking from a narrative sense.

I get that Disney doesn’t seem to realize that what they’ve been doing has been harming the brand.

In theory, Steve could come back in a good way, but you’re right they are unlikely to do it. If he comes back at all, it’ll likely be a member berries cameo in the final battle of secret wars. They have to one up the portals battle from Endgame somehow. The only way they can do that is by including every MCU character ever, plus old Marvel characters from other franchises, and random variants.

@mountainman - Marvel making Cap turn into an old man while it seemed rather poetic at the time, really hurt the brand overall.

They simply should have had him disappear and like Doc Brown with the Western Union letter to Marty from 1885, he should have just left him his shield or have someone deliver it to him with a note telling him that it's his shield now.

And let's be honest, Sam should have wielded the shield a few times in a battle alongside Cap much like Bucky did. That would have provided foreshadowing instead of just shoehorning Sam into the role.

Then after the letter and the knowing look by Bucky, you fade through to Steve living "happily every after" with Peggy....but that creates many questions and they need to address those.

Just bad writing overall as I have said for years.

@TyrantBossMedia - My only problem with old man Steve is it brakes their stated rules of time travel and the multiverse.

I’m happy he got to live a life of his own with Peggy. It just doesn’t make sense how he could get back, and how the TVA wouldn’t consider him a problem just like Loki was after he time jumped. The whole “it was supposed to happen that way” is such a cheap cop out.

But if I forget that piece of logical consistency, I like the narrative choice. For Steve not for the MCU. Losing Steve and Tony at the same time hurt the brand. Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if Boseman wouldn’t have died and could have played a bigger part and they wouldn’t have butchered Thor and Hulk. You lost all the OG Avengers at once - besides Hawkeye who couldn’t carry the franchise.

In the comics, they often don’t replace the team all at once. Keep some popular characters and introduce new ones.

The only way Phase 4 could have worked better is if they introduced more heavy hitters earlier - like Fantastic Four and X-Men. Sprinkle in the C and D listers, but you still need the popular characters front and center.

@mountainman - Old man Steve was such a cool scene. But yeah, it's kind of a rule breaker.

Still, if he managed to find someone else (another Tony, Reed, Rocket, I don't know) who helped him with the multiversal GPS he could've returned to that specific timeline in the 50's. Which kinda makes sense for him, cause he knew Peggy was alone (or at least without him), and missing Steve.

I had more problems with that logic break when the movie came out but I'm more relaxed with it nowadays, as a nice unsolved mistery - specially with everything being unmasked as a rule at today's holywood.

I hope he doesnt come back unless the situation is PERFECT. His ending/send off in Endgame was fantastic and he was the PERFECT person to play Cap.
