I've heard many people discussing the many things they would like to see in the upcoming
Captain America: The First Avenger film. Cap punching Hitler, Cap punching the Red Skull, Cap showing his leadership skills, Cap throwing his shield and the list goes on forever. Not included in the list (due to the fact that most people are aware it's not going to happen) is the ever present "They need to make his costume more like his classic costume." While I'm not denying that I would love to see every last one of those things and then some, I think there are more important attributes that are necessary for the film.
I sincerely hope Steve Rogers is the non presumptuous man that he has been portrayed as for years upon years in the comics. By this I mean, I hope more than anything that we won't see the headstrong, quip tossing, Ultimates version of his persona on screen. There is a reason Captain America is an icon and that reason is not found in The Ultimates universe that has become popular over the last ten years or so. Steve Rogers is polite, well mannered, determined, steadfast and always there beside his friends when they need him.
Unlike Superman, who many believe to be his super powered counterpart over at DC, you can't quite classify Captain America as a "boyscout." Like Superman, he represents everything that is good in man and stands for everything he believes in, but while The Man of Steel is usually hesitant to bend the rules, Cap is not. He doesn't like it but he won't hesitate to break a law or disregard government orders in order to accomplish what he believes is the right thing to do. He has even gone so far as to change his identity in the past because he was unhappy with government policies and leading an out and out revolt against The Registration act in the classic Civil War story line.
Steve Rogers is not a self proclaimed, swaggering, bad ass that walks around knocking people for a loop. He's calm, cool and as well trained as he is, more often than not, he wins by shear determination. Besides being the pinnacle of physical human perfection, he is about as close as you can come to being the perfect walking, talking man that we should all aspire to be. His persistent stance in the face of danger has earned the respect of everyone he has come in contact with through the years, from Atlantean Kings, to Norse and Olympian Gods, street vigilante's, super powered androids and every Superhero that ever crossed his path. Even murderous, overpowered Robots accept the fact that Captain America, as their heart and soul, is the most dangerous Avenger. A group of heroes consisting of men in multi billion dollar armor, walking Deity's and every other assorted super power you can think of and a man with a shield and the highest set of values you can hope for, is considered by their enemies, the most dangerous.
Now, I've heard others that are worried about this movie and while I won't deny I have concerns myself, I think the movie will be worth seeing. I'm sure it will be filled with battle scenes and fight sequences that will knock all of our socks off. If it is, I'm sure it will do well and people not familiar with Steve Rogers (Captain America), will love it. By all indications, it appears that the movie is in good hands.
This all boils down to the one thing I would like to see in this film. Hopefully many non comic fans are going to meet Captain America this summer. Cap probably won't look like the man the fans are familiar with but that won't matter to Joe Blow movie goer, they should enjoy the film anyway. The one thing I would like to see more than anything else in this film would be that Marvel, Joe Johnston, Chris Evans and everybody involved, introduce the man I described above to the masses. Let the world that isn't aware of just who Steve Rogers (Captain America) is, finally meet the man that has captivated writers and fans alike for more than 70 years.
In my opinion, if this one thing is done properly, this film will be huge.
