With such huge films the producers talk about the daunting changes of each.

"Studios are spending up to half a billion dollars so the pressure is enormous," said Ralph Winter, whose resume includes the "X-Men" and "Star Trek" franchises. "They keep trying to top themselves."

Marvel Studios Kevin Feige told the audience that Marvel's latest projects -- "Thor" and the upcoming "Captain America" -- had to balance the concerns of the core fan base with the need to succeed financially on a worldwide basis. He noted that the movie "Thor" was preceded by 600 issues of the comic.

"So you often have an extremely loyal and hardcore fan base but that's a very small percentage of the people who are going to see your movie on its opening weekend," Feige said.

Lauren Shuler Donner, whose "X-Men: First Class" opened Friday, urged the audience to draw upon complex characters and plot lines within the source materials.

"Within the 'X-Men' world, there are so many stories to follow," she noted. "In films, the characters need to be rich and complicated like Wolverine. He's complex and tragic."

Panelists also stressed that studios want as much certainty as possible in terms of recognizable stars, directors or concepts.

Feige admitted that "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth and "Captain America" lead Chris Evans aren't household names yet.

"The marquee name is the star," he added. "We took a chance on Robert Downey Jr. In 'Iron Man,' where the suit is the star."

Shuler Donner urged listeners to remain persistent and making themselves the indispensable element on a project.

"You have to figure out a way to get them to say 'yes,'" she added.

Winter followed by reminding producers of their status on tentpoles.

"You're a cog because they're the ones risking a tremendous amount of money," he explained.

I was pleasantly surprised by X-Men:First Class this weekend. Continuity issues aside it told a good story and the lead actors did a great job.

To me XMEN:FC turned out better than THOR. In THOR the danger to a small midwestern town paled in comparison to the threat of world ending nuclear war, the costumes seemed like cheap hardened plastic incarnations from the comics compared to explained flight suits, and the character relationships seemed rushed having THOR fall in love in what seemd like less than a week compared to months of interaction building bonds and eventually fracturing relationships.

Neither was perfect, again to me XMEN was more enjoyable but I am interested in where they take both stories from here. Looking forward to Green Lantern to finally see Hal on the big screen and Captain America to see his origin and how he will eventually connect with the rest of the avengers.

I loved THOR but it was rushed, i think in the next THOR movie they should make it a 2 to 3 hour movie and really tap into the origins of the asgardian character's. They should be able to do that since the 1st movie was a hit. TRAPDINSTEEL you have a good point with the different location's and danger level's in the movie's.In a way THOR falling in love with Jane so fast make's sense becuase when you have everything and alltimate power and then it's taken from you and your father is dead and your wont even fight you to come back, i think being pampered your whole life would make you pretty weak minded when it come's to losing everything, and then you become mortal and all you have left is sweet little Jane Foster.

I am sick of all these Thor bashers always pointing how brief Thor fell in love with Jane...haven't you ever fallen head over heals in-love at first sight before? They had "the talk"...you know, when they talked the whole night before they fell asleep? That's a big step. And what about Jane? Why did she fall for Thor? Well, he looked great, and tall, that's one. Second, he did support her work, when she was feeling bad about SHIELD Thor encouraged her...(Thor: Jane don't stop, you must continue your work...Jane: Why?...Thor: Because you're right...here...etc.), which is great. And third, he sacrificed his life just so she would be safe..."it's over...you're safe"....now, wouldn't any girl fall for a good-looking tall buff guy who sacrificed his own life for her and her friends?

Enough with all these Thor bashing! The movie has almost run it's course....it will trickle in just a few more $$$ and that's the end...it's at the end of it's rope...all the DC guys bashing it...too late, it already broke Superman Returns worldwide gross. Superman Returns flopped, get over it...no use trying to bring down Thor too...besides, it's only a minor hit, and box office-wise, it didn't set the world on fire, so chances are there won't be a sequel.

As for comparing X-Men and Thor...different movies, folks...but seriously, I wanted to see about the REAL X:Men First Class, you know -Scott, Jean, Hank, Bobby, Warren...we got at least Hank...but the rest were bleh. And it's very anti-American (or a pretty poor opinion of humanity), if you think about it....really? Both US and Russia agreed to kill children with a barrage of missiles? In any culture, that is murder. And it's a "nice film"? Shows the level of morality we as a generation have nowadays. It sucked...continuity issues is the least of it's problems.

Oh and speaking of things rushed...Weren't Charles and Eric supposed to be bestfriends for years? In the movie, they were friends for what...a week? And they bonded over chess? Weak.

And Raven...isn't she supposed to be a good guy/gal here? So, she sees Charles, her bestfriend for years, laying there, dying...and she leaves? Oh, and when she left, she even had this heart warming, and slightly funny and endearing way to say good bye to Beast...look woman, your bestfriend has just been shot!!!! At the spine!!!! COme on!!!

X Men 1st class was ok, I liked Thor better tho. Maybe cuz x men has been done so many times, it was nice to see something new.

On this jane and thor thing. Look, yeah it was pretty quick but who cares? this isn't a love movie, this is a COMIC BOOK MOVIE about THOR. I got to see hammer spinning, throwing, and yes even hammer-quakes. which is more than any Thor fan can ask for.

@th0r
I agree, comparing X Men to Thor is like comparing Chicken to Apples
