Kiera Knightly Approached for Captain America Role

The Hollywood Reporter, who last week broke the news of Hugo Weaving's tentative casting as Red Skull, has just revealed that Pirates of the Caribbean actress Keira Knightly was also approached by Marvel Studios to possibly star in The First Avenger: Captain America.

Details regarding the role are still secretive, it is believed she might portray Steve Roger's love interest Betsy Ross. Though Knightly is the first name to be linked to the character, Marvel is apparently still looking at other actresses.





MPP - I think it's ironic that Knightly might be a love interest in Marvel's Captain America, while her doppelganger Natalie Portman is a love interest in Marvel's Thor.

I also think her talents would be wasted on that particular role. Domino, King Arthur and Pirates of the Caribbean proved to me that she handles herself in action films very well; why not make her a combatant? Maybe Spitfire from the Invaders?


UPDATE: Deadline.com has just posted a few more actresses that could be Knightly's competition for the role: Alice Eve (She's Out of My League) and Emily Blunt (The Wolfman). They also state that the role is for Peggy Carter; who was not just one of Steve Roger's love interests, but an American spy and aunt to S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter.

Ah, well...I was thinking more along the lines of "historical" Betsy Ross, which, if you give a ton of leeway to the timeline, would actually make sense.

And, honestly, I don't think they'd use her because "Betsy Ross" sounds very similar to "Betty Ross." Hulk might take offense.

Lol, I like Knightly, but she needs a really good costar to bring out her performance, without one she is a little wooden take for instance her scenes in Pirates with Depp vs. Bloom. Put her with Tatum Channing or Channing Tatum, whatever the hell is name is, and we're going to be talking wooden, it'll be like watching a 4x6 (Bloom is the 2x4) and a dowel rod with super suits painted on them.

be YOUNG in the begining and when CAP gets unfrozen in the 21st century,, she is OLD, there is real drama there.

Damn this movie is going to set the CBM bar real high!

I would go so far as saying Kiera is a good to great actress. She has done a lot more than the Pirates movies. Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and Domino are just a few that are considered strong roles for her.

Marvel has said they are going with an unknown for Cap and surrounding him with bigger names, so this would make sense.

I've spent maybe 1/10th of my life drawing faces and I can tell you Keira and Natalie are not dopplegangers. Slight resemblance at best.

She's plenty strong of an actress, and she's very young - has LOTS of potential. Can hold her own with Depp, come on...

A movie and performance of hers I like very much is The Jacket.

She'd be fine (at the very least) for any lead in Cap, imho. Beanpole or not - she can act.

Like Poni said, rather see her play CAP than GI Tatur lol
