Joseph Gordon-Levitt has decided not to star and direct the live-action Sandman movie, releasing a statement just hours after it was seemingly confirmed that he would direct himself in the lead role.  Now, co-creator Neil Gaiman has make a few statements concerning Levitt's decision and answered a few fan questions.  Said Gaiman, "And, for the record, my respect for [Joseph Gordon-Levitt], is undiminished. Getting to know him was the best bit of the last round. He's special. "

Gaiman echoed Levitt's previous sentiment that he hopes that the two of them can find a way to work together on another project.  Perhaps he'll star in another one of Gaiman's numerous comics or novels.  "I very much hope [ work together on something else]. I would love to work with [Joe] some more. He's smart, honest & really nice."

Gaiman reminded fans that he doesn't own the rights to Sandman and has nothing to do with decisions regarding the Sandman movie.  "Reminder for the curious: I don't own SANDMAN. DC Comics does. I don't choose who writes scripts, the director, producer or cast."  The deal was done when I was 26, long ago, & I figured it was  worth it...He's an original character, created by me, Mike Dringenberg & Sam Kieth, but done as Work For Hire for  DC Comics."

Great Statement from Neil Gaiman, DC's Vertigo owns the properties (and he gets royalities) but knows the definition of "Work for Hire".

Now would be a great time for Jollem to remind us again how WB cares about comics fans and Marvel Studios only cares about money.

@Pedrito - Also how Marvel interferes with directors and WB is a creators' studio.

@Pedrito - Every business cares about money however in term of audiences care it between DC/WB and Fox.

@TheFamousJMC - Oh you think WB is a "creator's studio:? The same studio that allowed debacles like Green Lantern and Jonah Hex? Sometimes, a little restraint is good an necessary. Not everyone is a Nolan (*cough* Zack Snyder *cough*)

@Pedrito - Except this is New Line, technically not WB. Kinda like CN ruined DC animation, & TNT rejected Titans.

These are still separate companies, even though they are owned by WB.

People really need to do their research.

@StarkPool94 - Yeah, I mean it the way you mean it... WB "claim" they are a creators' studio.

Well since Cumberbatch is off in Marvel Land, why not go with Eddie Redmayne?

@soberchimera - I always pictured Benedict Cumberbatch as Morpheus. The high cheekbones, the accent, the ceremonious way of speaking....He's Dr Strange now, so I don't see it happening any time soon, but he'd definitely had been a better Sandman than Strange, for me.
