Christopher Nolan Clarifies His "A Real Movie Wouldn't Do That" MARVEL Jibe

After fanning the flames of the ongoing Marvel VS. DC "war" yesterday with his comment about movies that utilize post-credits stingers, director Christopher Nolan is now claiming that he was misquoted by the Guardian. More past the jump..

A quote pulled from The Guardian's lengthy profile of Interstellar director Christopher Nolan caused quite a stir here on CBM last night. The report claimed that after Warner Bros. suggested that he and Zack Snyder tag an after-credits scene, or "comedy quota ending", onto Man Of Steel, Nolan shot it down with the rather snobbish "a real movie wouldn't do that" line. This obviously didn't sit well with Marvel fans, as the post-credits stinger has become a staple of the studio's projects, either as a way of connecting each film with the wider MCU, or simply as a bit of light-hearted relief once the credits have rolled. Many felt that the dig was an unnecessary one, but now Nolan has clarified his comments to Buzzfeed. “I would never say someone else’s film isn’t ‘a real film,’” the Dark Knight director said in a statement to the site. “The quote is inaccurate.” Whether he said this, something similar, or nothing of the sort, one thing is for sure -- Marvel and DC fans will find something else to latch on to to keep this endless debate raging, and make no mistake...the studios couldn't be happier.

I love Nolan and his movies. I also enjoy Marvel's post-credits scenes. I didn't take offense to the alleged quote and I like his response here.

Different styles of directing.Nolan didn't have 2 clear up shit.It's his own perspective on film making.

I love Nolan's films. He really didn't need to clear up jack. He's a great filmmaker and it's his opinion.

Speaking of post-credits scene; I hate it when everyone has gone out, I'm left alone waiting for the scene and the security guy walks around, eyeing me like I'm one of those pervs in the cinema.

Back pedalling? Please, we get the point, the Marvel films are like a tv-series writ large. Nolan has always stated that he never wants to work in tv and that he considers the stand alone film a superior and more artistic medium. And there's definately something to say for that and also for wanting to become the best in a certain format.

I've got one for him too.
A well made movie doesn't need to explain its point more than once.

:P

@soforizo:
I missed that one, gotta look it up, should be hilarious.

The Green Lantern after-credits scene is better than any Marvel Studios after-credit scenes.

It still gives me chills even to this day. The "cool" thing to do right now it hate on WB DC castings, but you couldn't find a more suiting person to play Sinestro Mark Strong. #DCFan4Life

@Vortigar

And I've got one for you. An intelligent audience doesn't have to have a movie explained at all. It's no secret that American audiences are comprised of some of the dumbest people on the planet, and that's very obvious where some film makers' work is concerned. A handful of people get it upon first viewing while the majority need everything spoon fed into their lazy brains.

Point being, if you needed a first or second explanation for any of Nolan's films, maybe you're just not up to speed. I know I didn't.

@WimpyKid4Life: really?

Ok, you're a DC fan and it's your opinion. Btw, if you're not a fanboy, the after credits from Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The First Avenger, also Thor, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and maybe also Thor: TDW and Guardians of the Galaxy are pure gold.

"The Green Lantern after-credits scene is better than any Marvel Studios after-credit scenes."

That's kind of a stretch.The IM after credit scene definitely holds top rank in that department.IMHO.

Nolan didn't have 2 incorporate an after credit scene.He basically just did it during the films ending.Which is what I'm sure he was stating at.

Nolan = G & G stands 4 Genius. ;)

There's different ways 2 move the story 4ward in case of sequels.Nolan had his way & so does Marvel.Different artistic p.o.v is all.

That Joker Calling Card scene still gives me chills(especially since Heath delivered).Even more so than the IM after credit scene.Of course I'm more DC than Marvel.Still Marvel does his thing.XD

I THOUGHT there was something weird about him saying something like that from a director's standpoint....that's why I didn't even bother commenting. Before it became a "thing" nowadays with the MCU, probably the most well known after-credits scene I can remember is Ferris Bueller's....and anybody who claims John Hughes' didn't make "real films" loses much critical credibility to me. Glad to hear he was misquoted: Bad PR for Newsfeed.
