COMICS: Alonso, Brevoort And Wacker Discuss AMAZING And SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN

Axel Alonso, Tom Brevoort and Stephen Wacker share their thoughts on the end of Amazing Spider-Man #700 and drop more hints as to what we should expect when Doctor Octopus takes over as The Superior Spider-Man next year.

"My initial reaction was less than positive," laughs Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso when asked by Comic Book Resources how he felt when he learned of Dan Slott's plans for Amazing Spider-Man #700. "But that was before I heard exactly where Dan would be taking the story, the twists and turns and surprises. At that point, Dan had me on the hook. This story is risky. It was bound to be controversial, but it's going to be riveting for Spider-Man fans." Of course, it wasn't too long ago that another Peter Parker was killed off; the teenage version from the Ultimate Universe. However, Alonso was never concerned about any similarities between the two stories. "[The] story Dan is going to tell, and the story that [Ultimate Comics Spider-Man writer] Brian [Michael Bendis] told are very, very different. For starters, Otto Octavius is no Miles Morales!"

Editor Steve Wacker has also been vocal in his defence of this new direction for Spider-Man, and he told the site that just because Doctor Octopus has the body and memories of Peter Parker, it doesn't mean that we're going to see a sudden change in attitude. "We will see right away in "Superior Spider-Man" #1 that Doc's path is rife with moments where his more evil, ruthless nature is striving for control. Of course, at the same time he'll need to juggle the various relationships in Pete's life -- which means it's really the first time Dock Ock will have ever had to worry about other people. But while he might have Pete's memories, Doc ain't gonna be a nice guy. We see the results of that very early on." Executive Editor and Senior Vice President of Publishing Tom Brevoort meanwhile remains confident that this version of Spider-Man will one day be as fondly remembered as Ben Reilly now is. "20 years from now people will be saying, 'Isn't there some way we could bring back the Superior Spider-Man? I dug all those comics.'"

So basically Brevoort just confirmed that he doesn't expect this to be the permanent status quo...I feel a little better!!

It isn't that the idea is bad (-it borders alot on science fiction which, I think, is an ill-fit for Spider-Man), it's that it's executed so badly. The art is so stilted, so stiff and looks too much like manga, which was the WORSE thing to ever happen to comics. I'm trying to imagine if this would have worked better if John Romita Sr. drew it and gave the story REAL guts.
Ahhh, who am I kidding? Marvel died in theSeventies and is never coming back.

20 years from now.. we are never going to hear about this or Dan Slott or Tom Brevoort ever again.

Amen to that. Interesting idea horribly executed, and taken to far. Hope everyone that said 'yes' to this idea is out of the business in two years, let alone twenty.

@SuperSomething616

I think he was just giving an example, but you are right.

Hopefully Ock won't have a 20 year reign though.

That being said, the first issue will hopefully shed some light on what's going on.

They kinda left the door open for Peter to come back, hopefully they don't close them.

I'd really like to know what Stan Lee and Steve Ditko think of this turn of events, and their arguably most celebrated and beloved character being replaced by a villainous impostor, with such poor execution in the event itself.

I bet anything, Peter's "soul" will fight Doc Ock and win, in the year to come, anyway. We will get Peter back. I started a petition on Change.org "Bring Back Peter Parker". Just in case. Doc will have a meltdown and Peter will Breal throught and bye, bye Otto!

Of course they are cool with it, they agreed to let Slott do his thing. They're as guilty as him for this abomination.

If this was ultimates, cool. If this was what if cool. But 616? Not cool. Slott wants to do something different with spiderman than make another spiderman. Hell having DOC Ock make a spiderman knock off spiderman suit and running around would be okay but sticking him peters body? Again not cool.

[frick] Slott and [frick] Marvel.

Everytime I hear Wacker talk, one of my brain cells die.

"20 years from now people will be saying, 'Isn't there some way we could bring back the Superior Spider-Man? I dug all those comics."

I won't be one of those people because I will never read SSM. Nobody wants to see an evil bastard pretending to be Peter Parker.

I'm impressed with this whole thing, I truly am. It really takes some serious skill to ruin a classic hero AND villain all in one swipe.

"This is going to be riveting for Spider-Man fans"....yeah, the few that are left. I'm sure all 3 of them will be hanging on for every issue.

But seriously...I'm beginning to think Marvel hates Spidey. "One More Day" and now this? Have they run out of good ideas (rhetorical question, I know they have) or are they following Quesada's lead and trying their best to just ruin this character now?

Well it's obvious from that statement that this will be a contained story over a year or two, or however many arcs it takes for the story to be told.

I'm thinking on what "Lostcause" Wrote: slowly but surely Peter's psyche will begin to influence Octavius's. No doubt at the end though make him a hero and reinstate Peter.

I also agree that they should be contained at least to the Spider books for consistency reasons. But I have to admit one of the more curious aspects of this premise is how the Avengers will deal with his altered personality.

Look I'm all for superheroes retiring or stepping down or dying and being replaced by someone else...if done right.

Dick Grayson as Batman? Sounds good in theory, but DC screwed the pooch on that one hard.

Miles Morales taking over after Peter dies in USM? I was pretty shocked and less then happy when I heard the news but I think it's worked out okay so far.

Bucky Barnes taking over as Cap? Sure, it could've been worse I guess.

Although the original "Clone Saga" was a complete and tragic mess I think the Ben Reilly character rocked and I had no problem with him taking over as Spider-Man, although in hindsight it was still pretty much Peter.

This won't impact me too much though, I stopped reading Spider-Man after Quesada took a giant steaming s**t all over the character.

But this...this is low. Peter was always known for getting out of tight spots, always known for pulling out a victory at the last second. That WAS Spider-Man, the "never say die" mentality and it was always great to see him pull out a win. But to have him go down like this and to have him replaced by Doc Ock...just sad.

Peter dying in glorious battle? Sure. Peter retiring to live life with MJ? No problem. Peter dying because the villain pulls some major BS and ends up winning? No way.

Those responsible for this...may your careers come to end in the most agonizingly slow and painful way possible....oh and you to Quesada.

We should expect to see significant drops in Spider-Man comics sales.

What Spider-Man fan is truly OK with this? We know Peter Parker will end up being back in his own body.

This is just pointless and ridiculous! Spider-Man(Peter Parker) deserves better!!!

@dickbelt LMAO! You better make sure Dan Slott doesn't see that; you might give him an idea. :P
