COMICS: Dan Slott Talks AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700 And THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN

Ever since the end of Amazing Spider-Man #700 was revealed, writer Dan Slott has had to face the wrath of enraged fans. Well, in the following interview, he clears up what we should expect from the new "Superior" Spider-Man and more! Check it out.

Talking to Newsarama earlier today, Amazing Superior Spider-Man writer Dan Slott has talked in detail about the new status quo for the iconic Marvel character following the shocking events of the landmark issue #700 of the series (which went on sale today). Below are some highlights from the interview, but be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page to read the full version.

On Doctor Octopus' Role As The "Superior" Spider-Man:

[Superior Spider-Man] is Doc Ock getting a second chance at life, and not just any kind of second chance: He gets to be this young, athletic, handsome superhero with a great job and respect, who is a member of the superhero community. He gets to be accepted in ways that Otto Octavius never was. And in a weird way, the final gift that Peter Parker gives him is the lesson of great power and great responsibility. So now he's been sent on the right path. But we all know he is that arrogant, egotistical Doctor Otto Octavius. What's going to happen now? He's going to try to be a superhero. He's going to try to take this new lease on life and use it for good. But he's Doc Ock, so of course he's going to do it through his own lens. That's going to be an interesting journey. This Spider-Man is going to have to prove to the readers that he's a hero. That's an exciting journey.

On Where Else Readers Should Expect To See This Version Of Spider-Man Appear:

Anytime you see Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe, this is that Spider-Man. Superior Spider-Man is the Spider-Man who appears in Avenging Spider-Man, and is the Spider-Man who's appearing next month in Daredevil and Journey Into Mystery. Once we get past the opening arc of Avengers, if you see Spider-Man in there, he's going to be the Superior Spider-Man.

On The Differences Between Avenging Spider-Man And The Superior Spider-Man:

Our book is really going to focus on Spider-Man's world and Spider-Man villains and Spider-Man's supporting cast. You'll be in the world of Amazing Spider-Man but with the Superior Spider-Man. Over in Chris [Yost]'s book, it's really going to take advantage of the Marvel team-up of it. Now you'll get to see how the Marvel Universe reacts to this Spider-Man. How do the X-Men react to the Superior Spider-Man? How does the Mighty Thor react to the Superior Spider-Man. What's going to happen when he runs afoul of all these major characters of the Marvel Universe?

On The Belief That This Is Only A Short Term Status Quo Change:

I love that response. I love that immediate response of "this won't last." To me, that's the same kind of mindset that says, "Oh, well, Mr. Freeze trapped Batman in a snowcone machine, but he'll get out next week." When I think of the number of times I've put Spider-Man in, like, a death trap or a terrible situation, and readers immediately go, "Well, come on, the book's called Amazing Spider-Man. What? They're not going to publish it next month? Of course he'll get out." And it only took us to go, "Hey, guess what? We're canceling Spider-Man at #700" to make people realize this is real. It's like people freaking out that Wally West was The Flash. "There's only one Flash! It's Barry Allen!" Or before that, when they said, "Barry Allen isn't the Flash! It's Jay Garrick!" I know every single person has done that for The Flash at some point.

On What We Should Expect From The Superior Spider-Man #1:

You know, we have done more than show people what this book is going to be about, what Otto's path is going to be like. We've done more than that. In the first issue, there is another trick up our sleeve. You're just going to have to wait and read Superior #1. I am so not worried about anyone who says, "700 is my jumping off point!" I'm not worried, because I know that when word gets out and they hear what happens in Superior #1, they're definitely going to want to pick it up.

Slott can go [frick] himself. Peter's death was pathetic. And Ock suddenly becoming good is just plain lazy storytelling completely for shock value. Its been a while since I've read a Marvel comic but after reading the last few issues of Amazing Spider-Man I remember why I stopped.

And I have no problem with Peter dying and a new person taking over but the way Slott did it was so lame.

I just read it and yes, it does indeed suck. What a terrible ending to a legendary hero. I look forward to the day where Slott is no longer writing Spider-Man and Peter Parker is back under the mask. I would love to see Hickman or Waid take on writing duties. Avengers and Daredevil are miles ahead of this trite.

I beg u guys do not have a change of heart this is stupid

I mean it I'm not being sarcastic or employing reverse psychology there is nothing a homicidal maniac can do to redeem himself

Especially in the wake of all these killings in real life where the bad guy is ''misunderstood'' let ock get what he deserves

So Dock Ock now's kind of a good guy because of reason. Cool. Yeah, great plot there, I'll sure be buying it next month. NOT.

I still need someone to explain to me why the superior Spiderman will have the finger and what hooks similar to Spiderman 1999, or was that just a red herring?

In the 80s Dr. octopus was per trade as a serious pussy with a Spiderman phobia after Spiderman put the smack down on him on a bridge. I can't remember the whole story but Spiderman was trying to address a serious situation when Dr. octopus showed up and Spiderman made short work of him. Telling him he'd always took it easy on him.

So is this going to be ignored when the going gets tough or explored?

Everyone at Marvel needs to be fired. Their books have been horrible for years. They've ruined my favorite character long ago and have been twisting the knife every since.

Ok I really think the idea of a villain in Spider-Man's position is an interesting concept. But they way they've done it is such a F*** You to the readers who care about the characters. IF you were going to kill Peter, have him die like the hero he is, not completely unnoticed in Doc Ock's body. IF someone is taking over as Spider-Man for Peter, don't just have him steal Peter's life and body. I don't care what Slott says, I don't care how long he is planning on this being status quo, Peter Parker will be back. Probably by 2014, and at the latest whenever Slott goes off the book. I know if I got the opportunity to write the Spider-Man comic book, I would not want to write Spock.

Just when Marvel NOW is starting to kill DC52, they shoot themselves on the foot again. SMH, SMH.

Keep Hickman and Waid. Ditch Stephen Wacker. Educate Slott that short term gains = profit in the long run.

Guys-Slott is purposefully trying to piss you off.
Like bunches of people already know, Ock and Pete never switched.
Their memories were exchanged and Ock merely tried to overwrite Peter's mind with his own experiences.
Not only is it horribly written its basically Slott passing gas through his writing.
Its something stinky that wont last long.

So Slott doesnt write stories. He uses words to create farts that he can share through comics!!!! SMELL THE STINK OF...SLOOOTTTT!!!

There are so many things wrong with this stupid-ass story that I would be sitting here all night ranting about them. I will never pick up "Superior" Spider-Man. Part of what made Peter as Spider-Man so great was his charming and optimistic personality. It worked perfectly for a hero like Spider-Man. Now that's over and we have to deal with Doc Ock flailing around in Peter's tights while Marvel and Slott try to make us forget about the atrocities Doc Ock committed over the years.

True heroes don't lie, cheat, and kill to get what they want. Something that Dan Slott does not understand.

Comparing Doc Ock taking over Spidey to Wally West and Barry Allen? What a dolt!! Pathetic! Just trying some BS rationalization to keep people from dropping his title like radioactive waste. Too bad I wasn't buying it anyway, because it's not like I can not buy it HARDER!! Dan Slott, you're bone-headed idea is just the second coming of clone Spidey, nothing more. Wallow in your mediocrity!!

"It's like people freaking out that Wally West was The Flash. "There's only one Flash! It's Barry Allen!" Or before that, when they said, "Barry Allen isn't the Flash! It's Jay Garrick!"

Only Wally West wasn't a villain assuming Barry Allen's identity and living a lie. Big difference Slott! What a turd. I hope you prove me wrong with all of this Mr. Slott.

Why is everyone blaming a whole company for dan slotts work tho? And whats more confusing is the same people bitching, moaning, and saying "I'm never gunna buy this or any marvel comic" are the same ones that end up buying there comics anyway. It shows in the sales chart and marvel is #1 on the list, leading with all new x men, so everyones negative comment is irrelevant.

@penditamarah And this is coming from a person with a batman pic...ok.

Why are you guys so defensive over this whole thing? Because if you've read ASM #700 and enjoyed it that's totally fine, but don't bash everyone else because of their opinions. Can't everybody have an opinion just like the two of you have?

I think Slott has done a great job, and he managed to spark everyones interest in spiderman again, which is the whole point of this because come on, lets get real, NOBODY was even reading amazing spiderman, so he planned this before in the "ends of the earth" arc and it is a mission accomplish. Now with all the attention, people are going to keep buying because were all curious, especialy about the fallout of all this. Pete will be missed, but I believe Peter is still there...somewhere, issue 698 and 699 dropped alot of hints, but im not saying anything. Just gotta keep reading, so I cant wait for superior spiderman.

@Temple Actually the only sales figures we see are orders placed by retailers. And retailers ordered loads of Marvel Now crap and are getting stuck with them.
Marvel gave them special discounts so they would mass order thus inflating Marvels "sales" and making people think that readers are buying them up.
And hopefully people arent actually buying the comic. If theyre curious they can read it free at Pirate bay or somewhere.

AmpliDude

not bashing anyone's opinion, i'm calling it as i see it and it's true. Marvel released ONE marvel title this december ASM #700, they KNOW IT WILL MAKE A SHIT LOAD OF MONEY, no matter how shitty it turned out. Because fanboys might bitch and moan BUT they will still buy it due to some idiotic loyalty to brand or as collectors items, which is even more idiotic.

I have more respect for fanboys who simply say [frick] it, I like it and i am buying this shit than the rest who complain but still buy it. Either ways we will always get shitty gimmicky sales and events of the year because of this mentality. So yeah, [frick] those fanboys. My two cents.

You're bashing everyone who said they don't like this whole thing and maybe you should reread what I said. I never said you couldn't state your opinion. I was asking you why everyone else can't form their own opinion just like you did. You're mistaking my comment for an attack when all I am asking is why you're being so hard on everyone that has a different opinion than you. And since you asked so nicely, I think I will gtfoh.

@Temple- Marvel is partially to blame for this mess because they are the ones who gave the go-ahead on it. As for reigniting interest again, not for me. I'm done with Spider-Man comics forever or at least until all the nonsense Marvel has done over the last five years is resolved. It makes me happy that I won't be reading SSM because I won't have to tear my hair out over whatever stupidity could come from it.

Please gtfo, I'm done.
