COMICS: Marvel Unveils New SILVER SURFER Ongoing From Dan Slott And Mike Allred

Early next year, Marvel will be giving the Norrin Radd another chance to hold his own series in Dan Slott (Superior Spider-Man) and Mike Allred's (FF) "All-New Marvel NOW!" Silver Surfer series. However, there WILL be a twist! Read on for details and a first look at issue #1's cover.

Don't worry, that twist thankfully won't involve some sort of mind swap between the Silver Surfer and Galactus! Instead, Norrin Radd will be taking a girl described as a "kindred spirit" along for the ride this time around. Despite having starred in many short lived series' in the past, it's hoped that the recent surge in popularity for Marvel's Cosmic books (thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova) will mean that this iteration sticks around for a little longer. Check out Mike Allred's cover for issue #1 below, along with comments from Dan Slott on the book.

"With the Silver Surfer, on some level he's very alien. Not just because he's from Zenn-La. He's alien because he's the Surfer. The minute you give him someone with human eyes who can see things differently, it humanizes him. Because as much as this book is going to be about exploring the universe, it's also going to be about exploring the Surfer's humanity. So on some level, she is his guide for that. There must be so many more secrets to be revealed about the origins of this universe and how it works and where it's going and all this potential The universe is infinite and ever-expanding, and one of the joys in this book is going to places that the Surfer has never been to before. Seeing parts of the universe that will surprise and amaze him."

Slott and Allard... poor writing and poor art combined. Yep, as cool as SS is, not gonna even bother.

Will this ACTUALLY be the Silver Surfer? Or will it be Doctor Octopus? The Superior Silver Surfer?

My 4yr old might like this, shame the most powerful character in all of comics cant protect a woman from space wasps other than to run away on his surfboard, heroes like superman are clearly nothing compared to the mighty power cosmic, cant SS just reshape the whole universe see they are being chased by rainbows or fluffy kittens, i know nothing...

well even if DarkArts isn't 100% right, he's close. my first thought was that the sub-professional artwork was an attempt to follow up the "retro" direction they were doing with GotG, only instead of 40s-50s they were going for 60s-70s. actually the nameplate lettering kind of reminds me of Scooby Doo.

Anywhere and Everywhere is a tag line from Doctor Who and it looks like they're even giving him a female human companion...just like The Doctor.

Oh well, if they have to emulate a scifi series, they could do much worse, Doctor Who is Amazing and I'm sure Doctor Surfer will be an enjoyable read at the very least.

I'm confused. Didn't Norrin Radd become a human at the beginning of Matt Fraction's The Mighty Thor series, and Pastor Mike from Broxton transformed into a new herald?

Have I missed something?

I actually love Allred, and his art, but have never been able to get into it outside of Madman. It's really a bummer to me. I got to meet him at one of my very first comic cons, when I saw no one going to his booth at all. So I started talking to him about what his book was, etc etc, and he was just a really great guy. After that, I tried to buy everything of his I saw coming out. I really loved Madman, but once he started doing Marvel stuff...I just never felt it was a good fit for him. That may be totally my personal bias though.

lol @ people who hate Allred's art. Why do you even like comics?? It's cute, fun, pop art. and the logo is supposed to look 70's cartoonish.

I like that Marvel's embracing indie-looks for some of its books like Hawkeye, Sinister Foes, Captain Marvel etc. Chris Samnee's work is similar to ALlred's, so is Marcos Martin, and they all rock.

Looking forward to this book, should be good fun.

There actually was a Silver Surfer ongoing that lasted a long time--it was the Ron Marz-written series from the late 80's to the mid-90's.

I won't be reading this, although I love Allred's art. Any comic is doomed when it's by Fat Slott.

Maybe the Suffer keeps an oxygen bubble around her at all times and uses the power cosmic to break her Co2 back into 1 carbon 2 oxygen. :P

Now I know what comic I won't be picking up. I guess after spend so much time bastardizing Spider-Man, Slott had to turn his attention to Silver Surfer. Good luck, Norrin. You're going to need it.

Anyone who says Allred's art is for kids is a complete idiot. It's meant to be pop art and a throwback to Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.

I really can't stand DC characters as a whole but man, they rarely skimp on good artists.

Good God, i think people know i'm generally easy going; don't mind Spider-Ock, love the new Nova.

But seriously that ART is horrendous, it's awful!!! I could have drawn better than that when i was 12. this comic will not last long as i can't see any reader seeing that cover of the shelf and being tempted to pick it up
