Disney To Open Up The Marvel B-List Vault!

Disney To Open Up The Marvel B-List Vault!

This may seem like a surprise to some of you but this confirms what we have all speculated about!

Disney will officially own Marvel in a matter of days. The news of the day seems to be straight from the industry analyst that are definitely in the know. Check out this quote from THR:

"With Marvel, it's not just about 'Iron Man' and 'Hulk,' " Caris & Co. analyst David Miller said. "It's all about the other 5,000 characters that you and I don't even know about yet."

No doubt! But who will they focus on first, and will it go straight to video or be a big summer tent pole release? Here is the entire article:

"Moviegoers have shown a willingness to be entangled by Spider-Man's web over and over again. Now, as Disney prepares to buy the comic-book powerhouse Marvel, it faces the question of whether fans will also get attached to characters as obscure as Ant-Man and Iron Fist.

The Walt Disney Co. is making a $4.2 billion bet that they will as it nears completion of its acquisition of Marvel Entertainment this week. The cash-and-stock deal brings those characters and thousands of others to an entertainment empire that already includes Mickey Mouse, Kermit the Frog and Hannah Montana.

Disney's biggest challenge will be to get enough people enthused about second-string superheroes to justify the price -- about $1.2 billion, or 40%, more than what Marvel's stock was worth when the deal was announced Aug. 31.

The high price means Disney will have to find new ways to earn revenue from Marvel -- perhaps by bringing Marvel-licensed toys to more store shelves around the world, and by digging deep into its comic vault for potential new blockbusters.

Although Disney is constrained by the fact that big-name Marvel superheroes such as Spider-Man are already locked up in long-term deals with rival movie studios, Disney has had a history of successfully turning unknown talent such as Miley Cyrus, the actress behind "Hannah Montana," into multibillion-dollar enterprises.

"With Marvel, it's not just about 'Iron Man' and 'Hulk,' " Caris & Co. analyst David Miller said. "It's all about the other 5,000 characters that you and I don't even know about yet."

Disney shares are already being helped, having risen more than 20% since the deal was announced, partly on the hope for new character development and better use of Marvel heroes in movies, stores and theme parks.

Marvel shareholders are expected to give final approval to the offer on Thursday, with the closing of the deal to follow immediately.

The deal has already spawned a bout of speculation in the comic book world about who will be the next big Thing.

Possibilities include classics such as Ant-Man, the alter-ego of mad scientist Dr. Henry Pym, and Dr. Strange, the mystical go-to guy whenever there's an extradimensional threat. Both are connected to the Avengers line of characters that Marvel had started developing for the big screen long before Disney made the deal; Iron Man and the Hulk are among the Avengers that Marvel already has tapped.

There are about 5,000 more characters, including obscure ones such as martial arts master Iron Fist from the 1970s and up-and-coming ones such as the Runaways, a street-savvy pack of teenagers that have become a recent Marvel comic-book hit.

Whoever is the next comic book movie star, Marvel has a track record of success: its "Iron Man" movie took in $572 million at boxoffices worldwide despite the character once being a B-lister in the pantheon of superheroes.

"They picked the right one and they did it the right way," said Gareb Shamus, whose company Wizard Entertainment Group runs several of the Comic-Con fan conventions around the nation. "When you do that you've got a franchise that could last forever."

Through the deal, Marvel gains the ability to quickly reach more markets worldwide. Disney is by far the world's top licenser of its character brands, with $30 billion in retail sales in fiscal 2008, compared with fourth-place Marvel at $5.7 billion, according to License! Global magazine.

"It gives Marvel the opportunity to expand internationally and leverage the Disney retail relationships as well as their licensee relationships," said Tony Lisanti, the magazine's global editorial director."

Let's hope that Disney does what most other studios have not done in the past. Stick to the source material. Yes some ideas and origins are outdated but the foundation of what makes these super heroes great is still very currant. Just ask Fox if they wish they would have stuck a little closer to Wolverine's comic origin's and I bet you Laura will say "Well that's what were going to do in the next one." One thing is for sure, it seems as though we will be getting a lot more Marvel material in the near future then what we have experienced in the past. Even if it is B-list heroes it's still not a bad thing.

I would really enjoy some really good DVD movies. If they put as much quality into that as DC/WB puts into their animated DVDs, it would be really cool.I think they could create a series of high quality movies made especially for DVD.Over the years Disney has made a killing with all of it's non theatrical animated sequels. How many Marvel feature films would they be able to put out a year?I can't see them doing more than 3.So television and DVDs would be the perfect choice.

The home DVD market is very lucrative if time and quality is put into the production.I was just watching Stargate:The Ark of Truth the other night. That was a very high quality movie. The budget was just 7 million and it made about 13 million in sales and rentals.

Look at some of the best sci-fi series on tv.Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Farscape or Stargate.Take three of their episodes, put them together and you've got a really good movie.

BLEED @ MARVELS been talking about solo movies of IRON FIST and CAGE first,, we wont get a HEROES FOR HIRE till their done, but it would be a great idea afterwards, them teaming up like the comics, perfect crossover movie!

..... yeah well... what some people call the B list ain't really the B list.

Silver Surfer and Doctor Strange are not B list in any way except in terms of popularity.

And that in itself is a crying shame.
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 12/29/2009, 1:40 PM
bleed: I think Iron Fist and Cage work better when they're teamed up. I think they should just get right into a Heroes For Hire movie with maybe a few flashbacks of how they met each other and stuff.

jman: Thats not the entire article. Its just the first page.
The second page is what I did my Marvel on television article on.

Cool find though, we both got non conflicting articles out of it. That doesn't happen often.

Captain: If this brings all the heroes up to the A list then there won't be any reason to list them seperately anymore.

Yeah, I've noticed that the average person considers a B list hero to simply be someone they've never heard of or someone they know very little about.I would also never consider Doctor Strange a B list hero.

@Kenny, a very good point as comic books are a reasonably alternative media and many characters who are well known by us may be unheard of by most people.

I would like to see the Inhumans get some attention. I think Black Bolt & Co. are some of the most intersting and underrated characters in the Marvel universe.

@kenny38606

they consider as B list on popularity by general public.

anyway Blade was the most iconic B list Marvel character that became a hit worldwide. his the first Marvel film that was very successful, his the first R-Rated comic book movie that work well on the big screen, he restart the vampire movies in the modern age, it gave us Wesley Snipes but yet Marvel have not mention nothing about making Blade 4 but we get more news for X-Men spin off and Spider-Man 4 news.

Marvel should focus on bring Black Panther, Dr Strange, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, etc

im not sure how a live action Ant-Man movie will work

@ Infamous88: I made the point. Kenny was commenting on it.

@ Kenny: It's ridiculous, man. It never fails to shock me when I read online and see people say that making a Captain America or a Thor movie is "scraping the bottom of the barrel" or that they "shouldn't bother to make CBMs unless it's about Spider-Man of The X Men".

One time maybe six moths ago someone said they should make a Deadpool movie instead of Avengers.

Those are things I have heard said on THIS web site.

There is this mentality that if it isn't Spider - Man or X Men then it just doesn't matter. To me that seems like pure insanity.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 12/29/2009, 2:28 PM

I HOPE that's all it is lol

InTylerWeTrust, We are surely on the same page brother. A 'Heroes for Hire' movie would be just incredible. Call me crazy, but a while ago someone threw Terry Crews name into the hat for Luke Cage, and I think he could swing it. Seriously, just picture him saying 'Sweet Christmas' lmao, He would be dynamite. I'm at a lost for a good Iron Fist cast though.

LEEE, ahhh, a Moon Knight TV series... we can only dream and hope.

One of my biggest hopes for this merger... Pixar animated Marvel movies! I would take my kids to see an animated Power Pack movie in a heart beat.

Myth: Totally. And I've been saying Crews should be Cage for a long time too :)

But I want Charlie Hunnam for Iron Fist. He can act, and looks the part very well.

LEEE777
LEEE777 - 12/29/2009, 2:57 PM
TYLER @ Wayyy to go with everyone else lol! : P

Ive said HUNNAM too, like many others! Though i don't think he's good enough for a big screen version!!

But CREWS is a perfect POWERMAN!!
jazzman

Terry Crews would be good for Luke Cage but i also like Michael Jai White

I hope thats all it is too.

Lee: I was one of the first people to use Hunnam as IF, way back in my very first Avengers cast.

Hunnam is an excellent actor, he kicks ass regularly on Sons of Anarchy (which also stars The Perl Man). He's a much better choice than someone like Ray Park who can only do stunts but can't act to save themselves.

LEEE777 - 12/29/2009, 3:09 PM
Michal Jai Whites SPAWN! Or a good BISHOP! : p

Perfect team =

I'd love to see HANNAM though in an IRON FIST or HEROES FOR HIRE TV series though, that'll be killer!
