Spinning directly out of Jason Aaron's "Enter the Phoenix" storyline in the pages of Avengers comes Phoenix Song: Echo #1, a new series from best-selling Hugo Award-winning novelist Rebecca Roanhorse and artist Luca Maresca (Avengers).

The former first wrote Echo in the pages of Marvel's Voices: Indigenous Voices #1, and now looks set to return to the saga of Maya Lopez as she deals with her biggest transformation yet. Marvel Comics promises that "The exhilarating story will be packed with revelations about both Echo’s ancestry and the Phoenix Force mythos as well as the debut of new heroes and the shocking return of an iconic X-Men villain."

This unexpected development for the one-time Daredevil supporting character has seen her become the host of one of the most powerful entities in the Marvel Universe, and she understandably has burning questions that demand answers. Still learning her new cosmic abilities - and struggling with the Phoenix’s overwhelming personality- Echo strikes out to return to her roots.

However, the reservation has even fewer answers. And where power goes, evil follows. Someone wants Echo to fail - and unleash a power only the greatest heroes in history have been able to control.

"I am excited to return to Echo in her first solo series and follow this thrilling new direction Jason Aaron has taken her," Roanhorse says. "Readers will see some old favorites reimagined and some entirely new characters as Echo comes to terms with the incredible and dangerous powers of the Phoenix."

Check out the main Phoniex Song: Echo #1 cover by Cory Smith, as well as a variant cover by Leinil Francis Yu, below:

While I’m happy to see POC characters get more focus and attention, I just struggle to care about the Phoenix when it’s not X-Men focused. To have a Phoenix series without Rachel of Jean in at least co-starring is such an odd choice to me. There’s these two characters with all this experience, one being described as the one true host as White Phoenix of the Crown, so their knowledge and experience should be used

Sounds like another disappointing Marvel event.

Hmmmmm.........do you think it’s a good idea if Marvel Comics made the G-Men where instead of mutants we have Shokans living amongst humans twerking. In order to combat Jadeneto with her Brotherhood of Braindead Players. PROFESSOR GORO has created the G-Men where they will use their Shokan abilities to show that humanity and Shokans can co exist twerking into superheroes. The team? Twerkarine, Twerklops, Sheeva Grey, Clapossus and of course who can forget JiggleCrawler. Together they will be the G-Men……………………………….James Cameron has decided to drop Avatar in favor of an adaptation

I wonder what Chris Claremont thinks of this?

The entire premise behind why the Phoenix chose her in the first place was absurd. Legitimately, it was because of her "strong will to live". That was it. A trait that was never once even shown in the comics (she literally gets scared in the dark because she can't see or hear). I hate comic writing like this.

WTF is up with the Phoenix these days? It's being passed around like the town bike. First it gets banged by Odin and gives birth to Thor, now it's hitching a ride in D-list mutants.

How did Jason Aaron become such a hack?

@Battabing - Its par for the course now with Marvel. They need to reboot their entire comics line and start from scratch. Their ideas have just come down to rehashing old, successful stories over and over, which weakens the impact.

The Phoenix Force is no longer special. So many people have had it at this point that it doesn't even matter.

Spider-Man gets killed or taken out of his mantle every couple of years.

Several other characters are being killed and replaced with others that fill their mantles.

It really has become a joke.

It bugs me that Aaron of all people chose not to make Quentin Quire the next Phoenix host.

A lifelong mistake.

The Phoenix Force is becoming the whore of the MCU by getting passed around from person to person like a hooker at a party.

Ugh. I really really enjoyed her as a street-level character. Making her the new host of the Phoenix force feels just... dumb.

How are they not tired of doing Phoenix storylines?

I think I'll skip this,Jean Grey is the one true Phoenix and maybe Rachel Summers but now it just seems you have just got to wait your turn.

Why not hire a Native American writer and tie her to Native mythology. Why the Phoenix Force?
