I’m covering material from Wizard World in Ft. Lauderdale in Florida this weekend and I’ve had some time to sit and speak to a few actors. Among them, Christian Kane, one of the stars of The Librarians which returns for its second season this November 1st and Co-Star of the past hit series Leverage.
I interviewed Christian with a few questions in mind and one of those questions ended up bearing unexpected fruit. Here’s Christians response to my question:
“Now, I’ve been curious, because it seems like […] if we look at your career, which has been phenomenal. It seems like you’re being groomed towards a comic book role down this road. Librarians is pretty close in a sense. Is there anything you can share with us that is coming down the pipe?”
Christian Kane: “I don’t really know… [*wink*] I know that […] I know that I’m a fan of John Rogers [*smiles*] and I know that John Rogers is a fan of mine.”
CK: So…[*wink-wink*] If that were to be true. All I’m saying is that I’m a fan of his and he of mine. If I were to be a comic book character I would think that it would come from the pen of John Rogers.
If you’re not familiar with John Rogers, he’s the screenplay writer that put together the story for Transformers in 2007. He wrote the script for one of my personal favorite sleeper catastrophe titles, The Core and currently writes for The Librarians and wrote numerous episodes for Leverage. He did also write the screenplay for Catwoman—do with that information what you will. But if we look at his solid work—among them, the new series The Player (which has absorbed me as a viewer), we can see a pattern emerging for characters who are generally human performing almost at a super-heroic level. Because he has been working with Christian for years it seems Rogers been shaping his characters in this direction.
CBM Manny [chuckling]: Excellent, Excellent. If you could…
CK: I’m just telling you …wink [*wink* laughter]
CBM Manny: I’m quoting that in big letters!
*WINK*
At which time I pointed out if Kane kept winking at my crew (Kristy and Geoff Merconchini) who were recording and shooting photo during the interview; they would slowly be losing their composure. Kane was dripping charisma and is amazingly popular with female audiences if not completely down to earth and passionate about some of the roles we spoke of. Because of this he was amazing to speak with and we continued his interview regarding other comic roles among the current character he plays.
Without giving me much besides a look, a nod, numerous winks and his smile with his pearly white teeth. It was hard to deny there is something cooking down the road. He gave us his perspective on the comic roles he’d love to play including the ones where he’d taken a pass. For now, I’m curious what possible character could John Rogers have in his mind looking forward into the future of what Marvel, DC, Image, and Dark Horse are building.
Who can you guys envision for Christian Kane in any of the comic book universes we know and love?
I have a few choices of my own, among what I already know he’d personally love and want. So I’ll list a few here that I think would be interesting to see him portray based on what we know is a possibility for upcoming films. Then, of course, these suggestions are purely out of fun just to speculate—so take all of the below as my tongue-in-cheek way of telling Christian he can fit into numerous roles. Many of us would be ecstatic to see him in any comic book roles. He reveals much during our interview regarding his career and his brushes into the comic book world.
Marvel
The Zombie
DC / Vertigo
Cassidy
Image
The Man of Miracles
There are a few other cast choices not mentioned that we spoke about and will be mentioned in part of our interview article that will be coming up by the end of this weekend. Christian has the ability, the acting chops, and the grooming to play numerous characters for various comic books. I hope to see the
Angel alum playing one very soon.
