INTERVIEW: Will Christian Kane Be Portraying A Comic Book Character Any Time Soon?

I'm covering Wizard World in Ft. Lauderdale this weekend and as part of numerous interviews and sitdowns with many of the amazing guests, I got a chance to speak with Christian Kane; star of The Librarians, Leverage, and Angel. Hit the jump for more.

I’m covering material from Wizard World in Ft. Lauderdale in Florida this weekend and I’ve had some time to sit and speak to a few actors. Among them, Christian Kane, one of the stars of The Librarians which returns for its second season this November 1st and Co-Star of the past hit series Leverage.

I interviewed Christian with a few questions in mind and one of those questions ended up bearing unexpected fruit. Here’s Christians response to my question:

“Now, I’ve been curious, because it seems like […] if we look at your career, which has been phenomenal. It seems like you’re being groomed towards a comic book role down this road. Librarians is pretty close in a sense. Is there anything you can share with us that is coming down the pipe?”

Christian Kane: “I don’t really know… [*wink*] I know that […] I know that I’m a fan of John Rogers [*smiles*] and I know that John Rogers is a fan of mine.”

CK: So…[*wink-wink*] If that were to be true. All I’m saying is that I’m a fan of his and he of mine. If I were to be a comic book character I would think that it would come from the pen of John Rogers.

If you’re not familiar with John Rogers, he’s the screenplay writer that put together the story for Transformers in 2007. He wrote the script for one of my personal favorite sleeper catastrophe titles, The Core and currently writes for The Librarians and wrote numerous episodes for Leverage. He did also write the screenplay for Catwoman—do with that information what you will. But if we look at his solid work—among them, the new series The Player (which has absorbed me as a viewer), we can see a pattern emerging for characters who are generally human performing almost at a super-heroic level. Because he has been working with Christian for years it seems Rogers been shaping his characters in this direction.

CBM Manny [chuckling]: Excellent, Excellent. If you could…

CK: I’m just telling you …wink [*wink* laughter]

CBM Manny: I’m quoting that in big letters!

*WINK*

At which time I pointed out if Kane kept winking at my crew (Kristy and Geoff Merconchini) who were recording and shooting photo during the interview; they would slowly be losing their composure. Kane was dripping charisma and is amazingly popular with female audiences if not completely down to earth and passionate about some of the roles we spoke of. Because of this he was amazing to speak with and we continued his interview regarding other comic roles among the current character he plays.

Without giving me much besides a look, a nod, numerous winks and his smile with his pearly white teeth. It was hard to deny there is something cooking down the road. He gave us his perspective on the comic roles he’d love to play including the ones where he’d taken a pass. For now, I’m curious what possible character could John Rogers have in his mind looking forward into the future of what Marvel, DC, Image, and Dark Horse are building.

Who can you guys envision for Christian Kane in any of the comic book universes we know and love?

I have a few choices of my own, among what I already know he’d personally love and want. So I’ll list a few here that I think would be interesting to see him portray based on what we know is a possibility for upcoming films. Then, of course, these suggestions are purely out of fun just to speculate—so take all of the below as my tongue-in-cheek way of telling Christian he can fit into numerous roles. Many of us would be ecstatic to see him in any comic book roles. He reveals much during our interview regarding his career and his brushes into the comic book world.

Marvel

The Zombie

DC / Vertigo

Cassidy

The Man of Miracles

There are a few other cast choices not mentioned that we spoke about and will be mentioned in part of our interview article that will be coming up by the end of this weekend. Christian has the ability, the acting chops, and the grooming to play numerous characters for various comic books. I hope to see the Angel alum playing one very soon.

Wizard World is going on right now in Fort. Lauderdale Florida. They continue their 2015 tour in Tulsa and Austin during October and next month they are in Lousiville, Reno, and New Orleans.

Chime in on this conversation, toss out ideas, your fancasts. I have numerous pieces to put up redarding this weekends show, including other interviews--Check back to CBM for more on this wekeends Wizard World Ft. Lauderdale. Share, tweet, pin, form some words and hit that giant red thumb below...You know I love it when you do!

Man crush alert. Good article though.

He was awesome in Angel as Leslie, so maybe something Marvel one day due to his affiliations with Joss?. Regardless, I find him to be an underrated actor, and I had no idea he was doing anything else, I should probably check out this show.

yeah but The Librarians is God awful

@ScarletWarlock I've known him in passing ever since 2011 while working on other projects and a piece of information which will be on the interview. But he's an amazing character actor. He has a comedic charm to his action sequences. You want to laugh and cheer him on as he pummels villains. Whether it's on Leverage or Librarians. I have theories about what is within the conversation above.

Really liked him in Leverage. The guy can kick ass. I always saw him as Wolverine because he is short in stature. Age-wise he's getting up there though.

He wouldn't be a half bad looking Hal Jordan

Christian Kane is Wolverine.

@efcamachopmp
yeah, he has a charm about him, and if he's that good in Librarians I suppose I should check it out, pretty much everyone(except for alyson hannigan, sarah michelle gellar, and david boreanaz) from the buffyverse are underrated actors and are in need of some serious work, so I'm glad he's getting a little more recognition.

He could be a good Wolverine. I'd like to see him as The Question though.

This guy? I just get such a strong douche vibe from him. Maybe it goes back to him being an a-hole in Angel. Just can't get behind him as a good guy. Find him much more believable as villain.
efcamachopmp
efcamachopmp - 10/3/2015, 8:27 PM
@huckfinnisher Doesn't that just mean he played a convincing villain? Typecasting is sometimes a label made by the viewer not the actor.
huckfinnisher
huckfinnisher - 10/3/2015, 8:37 PM
Yeah efcamachopmp, I said it was me. I don't think its fault, although it is true that people fit certain roles better than other. You wouldn't see mads mikk as a happy go lucky sweetypie. It just doesn't fit (extreme example I know). All I know is I couldn't watch leverage due to cringing every time he was on screen. Definitely just my opinion though. Did you see him as Lindsey in Angel? He was pretty good as a villain, I would bet you would agree he plays a better villain than a hero. Not trying to insult the guy.

Every time I saw him on Leverage, I thought "That's Wolverine"
efcamachopmp
efcamachopmp - 10/3/2015, 9:13 PM
@Huckfinnisher I definitely think he was great on Angel. Very good villain. But I also think he's a great anti-hero type. Librarians gives him a better effort as the good guy. Leverage he walks a line between a protagonist and antagonist.

@ScionStorm Sounds like "I would like to say this...yoink...but I can't say this...yoink yoing...because either I'm not sure if it will happen or it's in the works and I can't say...yoink yoink...and I'll let you decide which is which--maybe. Yoink, yoink.

I once cast him as the voice of Altas/Erik Josten in my "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes--Rise of the Thunderbolts" fancast, and plan to cast him as the voice of Gambit for my in-the-pipeline "Marvel Anime: X-23".

Tevii
Tevii - 10/4/2015, 1:45 PM
Ever since Hugh Jackman endorsed Tom Hardy as Wolverine I have a feeling that probably caught some decision makers attention so I doubt Christian can top that. But I still think Kane could be a decent Wolverine.

I can agree with Moon Knight... I cannot possibly disagree more with him cast as Hal Jordan though. MAYBE Guy Gardner but not Hal.

He might be charming enough to pull off Booster Gold

"Ever since Hugh Jackman endorsed Tom Hardy as Wolverine I have a feeling that probably caught some decision makers attention so I doubt Christian can top that. But I still think Kane could be a decent Wolverine."

Isn't Tom Hardy currently working on something DC, though?
Tevii
Tevii - 10/4/2015, 2:49 PM
KingEmperor - yeah 100 Bullets... but Hugh Jackman still has Wolverine 3, so by the time they are both done Hardy might be available again.

He's too short to be considered A-list material. However, with that said, he'd be a good fit for a character that's also short but insanely popular...Wolverine.

I could see him doing it some justice. He looks pretty good all grizzled up, and that's coming from a straight male.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 10/4/2015, 5:24 PM
"He's too short to be considered A-list material."

He's two inches taller than Tom Cruise. ;-)

Tevii - 10/4/2015, 5:24 PM
BigDaddyJinx - too short to be an A-lister? Really? He's taller than Tom Cruise, Al Pacino, Martin Sheen, Daniel Radcliffe and Elijah Wood..... I dont think height has much to do with being an A lister
