Which studio, Marvel or DC, won the battle of Hall H?

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) – In one of Comic Con’s most awaited presentations, Marvel and DC superheroes of all kinds from Batman and Wonder Woman to Ant-Man and Wasp took over the fan convention on Saturday, as leading actors revealed surprises to films that will showcase the characters.

A lot of tweets have come out claiming that one studio or another won the battle of Hall H at San Diego Comic Con yesterday, the majority of them aligning with DC/Warner and its exciting reveals of the Superman-Batman-Wonder Woman trinity of actors and their various costumes.

Before I ask you to Vote in our Poll I am going to compare a few of the big announcements from each presentation to contextualise who I think the victors were on the day:

1. Costumes

The biggest reveal obviously was the Wonder Woman armour design, with Batman's Frank Miller-inspired helmet-cowl coming next, but Marvel also physically displayed its Ant-Man helmet, the device that controls and communicates with insects, which was pretty sweet, but not all that new.  I give the edge in this category to DC.

2. Characters

DC didn't announce any new characters, while Marvel officially confirmed Cory Stoll and Evangeline Lilly as major characters in Ant-Man.  Lilly is so sweet and hot, you can't help but be delighted that her participation is finally rubber stamped.  On top of that, Marvel presented Paul Bettany who, although he has been in the MCU since 2008's Iron Man, we now know will play the Vision.  They also climactically brought out Josh Brolin, who will portray Thanos in this week's Guardians of the Galaxy and onward, wearing the freaking Infinity Gauntlet!  Marvel takes this category easily.

3. New Movies

DC truly disappointed us by not confirming their rumoured slate of movies.  So much for the possibility of Justice League, followed by a Wonder Woman solo and new Green Lantern and Aquaman.  And wtf happened to Guillermo del Toro's Justice League Dark project?  Meanwhile, all Marvel had for us was a release date for James Gunn's GOTG2.... which is pretty underwhelming in lieu of the rumoured Doctor Strange announcement.  We know it's being made with Scott Derrickson at the directorial helm, but we were expecting to find out its star at SDCC.  It would be pretty ironic if the GOTG2 announcement turned out premature and the movie flopped, but it won't.  This category is a disappointing draw.

4. Preview Footage

DC started with a pretty spectacular clip of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with a sustained look at the new Batman costume and Dark Knight Returns cowl.  Really though, it doesn't stand up to repeat views since all it is si them staring at each other with glowing eyes.  What's the deal with glowing eyes anyway?  I guess it's an intimidation thing, because it wouldn't offer much in the way of stealth.

Marvel presented two clips, one of Ant-Man which didn't add too much, and it was pretty comical hearing a chorus of boos as director Peyton Reed was introduced.  Avengers: Age of Ultron footage was quite spectacular, showing glimpses of Ultron himself, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, the Hulk fighting against Hulkbuster Iron Man, and a post-apocalyptic shot of the Avengers after losing a fight with Ultron.

I'm going to call this category a draw just because I haven't had enough time with the footage to decide.

5. Star Power

DC has Affleck, who despite his success as screenwriter and director, would never receive plaudits for acting.  If you break it down character by equivalent character you have:

Affleck (Batman) < Downey (Iron Man)
Cavill (Kal El) < Evans (Captain America)
Gal Gadot (Diana) < Johansson (Black Widow)
Momoa (Aquaman) < Hemsworth (Thor)
Amy Adams (Lois) = Ruffalo (Banner)
Fishburne (Perry White) < Jackson (Fury)
Ray Fisher (Cyborg) < Renner (Hawkeye)
Eisenberg (Luthor) < Spader (Ultron)
Irons (Alfred) < Bettany (Vision)

And then add Thanos, Scarlet Witch and the whole cast of Ant-Man to the equation, it's not even a close race.  How can this be a Warner Bros production?  Disney has them beat handedly with an Infinity Gauntlet as well.

Now it's time for you to VOTE in our POLLWho do you think won the battle of Hall H; Marvel or DC?

I actually took this seriously...Then I read the end section...That's not how you determine who won out of Comic Con.

I'd say it was a disappointing draw amongst all of them, maybe DC edged out the most.

Why does this article even exist? It shouldn't be a [frick]ing competition! Also, I've noticed this winning thing only came in last year when MoS was on people's minds.

Seriously? Spader less famous than Eisenberg? OK lol. Maybe if you've been watching movies only in the last five years or so.

If you are going to ask people to vote in a poll, you CANNOT try to influence the vote with your opinion in the lead up to said poll. It is not professional whatsoever.

While I believe competition is healthy for studios and any major corporation, I think in the fans eyes, the winners are subjective. Now for me, nobody won. nothing announced piqued my interest in either studio more than it had been already. I am not a DC fan to the point where if they announced the closure of the company, I would have no opinion on it whatsoever. So, OF COURSE, the Batman/Superman footage or Gal Gadot in costume would have no effect on me. But if I WERE a fan of those characters, I could definitely see why others would be super stoked for it Marvel didn't excite but I could see where other hardcore Marvel fans would be excited. So yeah, asking for an opinion of WHO WON is asking for an opinion of each person ...meaning there is no REAL winner when it is just based on one small communities reaction. And there is nothing announced at these things that are going to change people's allegiances. Nothing Marvel does here will turn a stubborn dark, brooding, and gritty Nolanite into Marvel fan. Nothing DC will do will change the funny, happy go lucky, don't know how to be serious Marvelites into DC fans. So, of course, those of us were not upset with everything will think 'THEIR' studio won no matter what.

We will not know the REAL winner until these movies release. This isn't about 'winning' comic con, this is about hyping your movie so they can WIN the box office when said film is released. We will not know who WON until A)Avengers 2 breaks the 'Cameron Bar,' and/or B) B v S breaks whatever record the highest grossing Marvel film makes ....in terms of the movies hyped at THIS comic con. So yeah, no real winners until the movies are released.

Again, I must reiterate: if you feel the need to influence opinion before asking for someone's opinion, you should not be writing articles because you do not get the point. If this were an editorial on your opinion or your thoughts, that would be fine. But you ask a question to gain a census on how people feel you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT post your own opinions ...because it will affect said census. It is petty and it is an example of corrupt journalism.

@Objectivelybiased this isn't journalism, it's a companion piece to a poll. I'm not a journalist, I'm a content creator. I try to stir up controversy to get hits and prompt debate. Relax and join the fun, there's enough dry journalism out there to out us to sleep regularly.

the thread author is talking rubbish. he pretends to be objective asking people to vote independetly off the back of a clearly skewed pro marvel article and pretending to be objective.

if I could downvote this I would

How the hell is Paul Bettany more famous than Jeremy Irons!!!! And Eisenberg is more famous and is an oscar winning actor.

This was a good article till then.

@TheReddestHood What did Eisenberg win his Oscar for?
AwesomePromoz
AwesomePromoz - 7/27/2014, 10:01 AM
In actual fact Eisenberg has won no major awards whilst Spader has been best actor at Cannes and has three Prime time Emmies.

I's say that it was a draw, but since that is not an option, I'm going with Marvel, but only because I have higher expectations when it comes to their movies.

I wouldn't say that MS and WB were disappointing for not revealing too much. I'll leave that category to both Sony and Fox.

@TheFamousJMC

I meant nominated, but...was Spader?

Also Jesse Eisenberg has had 16 wins and 42 nominations vs Spader's 7 wins and 21 nominations.

@TheReddestHood

In 2011 a guy named Demián Bichir was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars; does that make him a more bankable and bigger star than James Spader?

That's an impressive tally for an actor in his early 30s but until he wins something major like say Cannes or three Emmies then he's not in the same conversation, plus he's terrible casting for Lex Luthor.

Ok well since the popularity contest is not going to be swung by the actors playing either Alfred or the Vision, I'll retract that one, ok guys ;)

@TheFamousJMC

Look we both have different opinions on the matter and frankly I don't care enough to argue with you.

Also this article should be the statement of facts leading up to a pool, when clearly you try to sway the reader in to voting for Marvel. The star power thing was unnecessary and dumb (considering you included rumored actors and half of the Marvel actors are only where they are today because of Marvel movies). It's also funny because unless they were announcing casting, star power has nothing to do with this Comic Con.

The idea of a studio winning is dumb seeing as Comic Con is not a competition, but if I had to say one of them won it'd be DC, and so did the people who took this poll!!!

I'm done with this conversation so, no bother responding.

AwesomePromoz - 7/27/2014, 11:45 AM
I haven't used any rumored actors, I got my cast breakdown from IMDb. I haven't tried to impress any bias, I just gave an honest personal assessment based on five arbitrary categories. I have not prevented anyone from voting for DC, in fact they are winning the poll by about 60-40 split, so I've been as impartial as I wish to be. If you know how to write a better piece about Comic-Con or the competition between Comics companies/studios then please feel free to post your links in this discussion thread :)

Here's the thing about that "conversation drivers" graphic: If twice as many people are talking about Bat v Supes, but it has fewer intents to view, that means they think it sucks or aren't convinced yet.

"Who won comic-con?" this question is nothing new, it has always been asked every yr, after SDCC...
its the question of which Studio was the most entertaining and has satisfied their fans...
and this year again, it was WB/DC.
