SDCC '19: 20 Biggest Non-Marvel Studios Movie, TV Show, And Comic Book Reveals At This Year's Comic-Con

Marvel Studios may have stolen the show at Comic-Con this weekend, but we have plenty of huge updates on films, TV shows, and comic books that have nothing to do with the MCU! These are the highlights...

On Saturday night, Marvel Studios held a game-changing panel in which its Phase 4 slate - which will play out both in theaters and on Disney+ - was finally revealed to the world.

As a result, pretty much everyone else attending the event found themselves overshadowed and many big announcements and news items were either missed or lost in the shuffle. Well, don't fret, because we now have a breakdown of all the biggest movie, TV show, comic book, and video game announcements and reveals from the weekend, many of which haven't been featured on CBM.

From leaked footage from the Avengers Project to Marvel Comics' huge plans for the rest of 2019 and plenty of new details about Crisis on Infinite Earths, this was most definitely a busy Comic-Con.

So, to check out a recap of these non-Marvel Studios news items, hit the "View List" button!

Kylo Ren's Origin Story Will Finally Be Revealed

Fans still have a lot of unanswered questions after watching the first two films of the new Star Wars trilogy, and it's pretty obvious that there are a lot of gaps that The Rise of Skywalker simply won't have time to fill.

Well, this December, Marvel Comics will release a four-issue series written by Charles Soule which finally promises to delve into Kylo Ren's origin story and his connections to the Knights of Ren. No artist for the comic has been revealed, but this promises to be a must-read when it hits stores.

Meet The Anti-Monitor!

If you're at all familiar with the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic book, you'll know that it pitted the DC Universe's greatest heroes against the villainous Anti-Monitor. Well, concept art was revealed for the small screen version of the event over the weekend, and we now know that he'll be played by Monitor actor LaMonica Garrett. There's some definite Apocalypse vibes, though, right?

The Halloween Franchise Continues

There were rumblings this might be the case, but it was made official on Friday that David Gordon Green is returning to direct two more Halloween sequels. The first, Halloween Kills, will be released on October 16th, 2020, while what sounds like the final instalment of this trilogy, Halloween Ends, is going to reach screens on October 15th, 2021. So, that's us sorted in terms of horror!

The Future Of The X-Men

We know that Jonathan Hickman has been tasked with taking the X-Men in a new direction later this year, but an entire family of titles featuring the mutant characters have now been revealed.

X-Men #1 is written by Johnathan Hickman and artist Leinil Francis Yu, Excalibur #1 is by writer Tini Howard and artist Marcus To, Mauraders #1 comes from writer Gerry Duggan and artist Matteo Lolli, New Mutants #1 will be penned by Johnathan Hickman and Ed Brisson with art from Rod Reis, Fallen Angels #1 is by writer Bryan Edward Hill and artist Szymon Kudranski, while X-Force #1 comes our way from the team of writer Benjamin Percy and artist Joshua Cassara.

As you can see, some major changes have been made to all of these teams and one noteworthy alteration to the Marvel Universe as a whole is Betsy Braddock becoming the new Captain Britain!

DC Animation's Updated Movie Slate

Red-Son

Warner Bros. decided to give Comic-Con a miss this year so we didn't get any news about the live-action DC Comics movies. However, Warner Bros. Animation was on hand to announce a number of upcoming animated adaptations, including the long-rumoured Superman: Red Son

That's expected to debut next spring, and it was also revealed during the Batman: Hush panel that 2020 will see the release of Justice League Dark: Apokolips War and Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Some fans are obviously disappointed about the focus remaining on those oh-so familiar faces.

Mary Jane Watson Gets Her Own Series

Mysterio has been tasked by a sinister new Spider-Man enemy to give Mary Jane Watson her big acting break, and that's set to play out across five issues in The Amazing Mary Jane from writer Leah Williams (Giant-Man) and artist Carlos Gomez (Red Sonja). It sounds like the events of this series will be pivotal to what's happening in The Amazing Spider-Man, so it should be one to watch.

The Walking Dead Is Coming To The Big Screen

One bombshell announcement made during The Walking Dead's Comic-Con panel was the news that the planned Rick Grimes movie will now be released by Universal Pictures exclusive in theaters.

This is a bold move by AMC considering the fact that ratings for the show continue to decline, and while no release date has been set, we can probably expect this one to start coming together shortly.

Black Canary And Spartan's New Costumes

Arrow enters its final season this year and two fan-favourite characters have received something of a makeover. Laurel Lance is now in a costume that solidifies her status as the new Black Canary, while it seems as if Diggle has ditched his Green Arrow persona for a very cool new Spartan suit.

We don't know what comes next for these characters once Arrow's eighth season airs, but it's great to finally get what could be described as a comic accurate version of Black Canary here.

Annihilation 2?

Annihilation gave Marvel's cosmic universe a kick up the butt and transformed the comic book world (and the cinematic one) in ways that continue to have an impact. Now, it seems we're getting a sequel because a teaser image released over the weekend confirms that Annihilus is set to make his return.

The teaser is by artist Ariel Olivetti and it sounds like the classic Fantastic Four villain now has even bigger plans in store for the Marvel Universe and that could spell doom for our favourite heroes.

New Terminator: Dark Fate Details Revealed

There was no new trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate, but a very cool featurette was unveiled along with some intriguing new details, including the fact that Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 is living a normal "human" life and known to his friends as "Carl." You can read a full recap of the panel right here.

Mister Miracle Wins Big At The 2019 Will Eisner Awards

MM

The 2019 Will Eisner Awards took place on Friday night and Tom King and Mitch Gerads' Mister Miracle was the big winner. Writer Tom King and Mitch Gerads won for "Best Limited Series," "Best Writer," and "Best Penciller." King also picked up an award alongside Jason Fabok for "Best Short Story" in the "The Talk of the Saints" story from Swamp-Thing Winter Special #1.

There was some good news for Marvel Comics as well, though, because Chip Zdarsky's final issue of Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man (#310) won an Eisner for "Best Single Issue/One-Shot."

You can find the full list of results courtesy of our friends over at Comic Book Resources.

The Flash Director Isn't Making The Movie...Yet

IT: Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti is set to take the helm of The Flash for Warner Bros. (we'll see if that lasts), but he's not starting work on the DC Comics adaptation just yet. Instead, he's taking a break once that horror movie arrives in theaters and that surely means we won't see the Fastest Man Alive race into theaters until 2021/2022 at the earliest. Assuming it happens, of course!

Avengers Project Footage Leaks Online

Marvel Games talked a lot about this game at Comic-Con (you can find our full recap of the panel by clicking here) and while those in attendance praised the footage that was shown off from Avengers Project claiming that it was a big improvement over the trailer, none of it was released online.

Well, thank goodness for leaks, because the gameplay has now surfaced thanks to one sneaky fan and it definitely looks like a lot of fun. Throw in the fact that we're getting a number of alternate costumes and possibly even the chance to play with Ms. Marvel, and next May can't get here soon enough.

Return To The Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a huge success and Marvel Comics is finally returning to that premise with a new series revolving around the comic book version of Miles Morales.

It's set to run for six issues and will feature work from the likes of Juan Frigerim Arthur Adams, Stuart Immonen, and Stacey Lee. Jed Mackay, meanwhile is going to be on writing duties. Plot details haven't really been revealed as of yet but based on this cover art, it should make for an enjoyable read.

Wally West Is Returning To The Flash

Kid-Flash

After making the leap from The Flash to Legends of Tomorrow, Keiynan Lonsdale is set to return as Wally West in The CW series to help Barry Allen "fight one of the greatest Flash villains ever."

As for Tom Cavanagh, he's set to return as another version of Harrison Wells, but will also play Pariah in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. For those of you unfamiliar with that character, he was a scientist whose unorthodox experiments lead to The Anti-Monitor discovering and destroying his Earth. The Monitor saves him and this Pariah will likely be an alternate version of Wells.

IT: Chapter 2 Trailer Released

As noted, Warner Bros. decided to give Comic-Con a miss this year and that meant no new trailers for movies like Joker and Godzilla vs. Kong. However, IT: Chapter Two was given the spotlight, and we got a terrifying new trailer highlighting the battle between the adult Losers' Club and Pennywise. Needless to say, there's a good chance this will be one of this year's best movies.

Some Big Star Trek Updates

Picard

The Star Trek movies may have entered development hell, but things are looking a lot brighter on television. During Comic-Con, we learned more about Picard starring Sir Patrick Stewart and now know that the series will catch up with him at a later point in his life after he's left Starfleet behind.

Some familiar faces from The Next Generation will appear, including Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Star Trek: Voyager's Jeri Ryan. It's set to debut on CBS Access next January.

Star Trek: Discovery, meanwhile, is coming back for a third season and will find the crew 1000 years in the future. Standalone shorts are also coming featuring characters like Pike, Spock, and Tribbles.

A Number Of Big Trailers

Comic-Con featured a lot of great trailers, including The Witcher, Watchmen, DC Universe's Harley Quinn series, and the aforementioned Star Trek spinoff Picard. You can check out all of them and more in our recap by clicking here.

Oh, and on the movie front, we did get a very cool first look at the new Top Gun sequel (see above).

The Red Goblin Returns

In Amazing Spider-Man #800, Norman Osborn bonded with the Carnage symbiote to become the Red Goblin. Well, the villain is set to return for the "Absolute Carnage" event in a tale that's expected to address what else the villain was getting up to when he was bonded with Cletus Kasady's other.

Writers Pat Gleason, Rob Fee and Sean Ryan will collaborate with artist Pete Woods for Red Goblin: Red Death #1 and it's set to be a one-off issue that will loosely tie in with the main event series.

Kingdom Come Superman Is Coming

KC

Crisis on Infinite Earths continues to get better and better as we learned that Legends of Tomorrow star Brandon Routh will be suiting up as Superman for the event. It doesn't sound like he'll don his Superman Returns costume, though; instead, a t-shirt worn by the actor during the Comic-Con panel has pointed to us getting the Kingdom Come version of the hero, which is exciting for a lot of reasons.

Routh has said that he's looking forward to getting the chance to say goodbye to the character, and it should be a lot of fun watching him interact with Tyler Hoechlin's version of the Man of Steel!

@tmp3 - Well, we're one week away from the end of the month, so if he feels he hasn't reached an adequate number or articles he can put on the bill he's gonna send Nate, you can expect at least 4 to 5 "10 reasons why Jane Thor is a great idea" type articles in the last few days of July.

Nice to see Mister Miracle win at the Eisner, really enjoyed that run. Hopefully King's writing skills transfer over nicely to New Gods; since we've never had a superhero film where the protagonist suffers from the kind of internal conflict that Scott Free did in that run. This is, of course, assuming that film happens.
Best trailers from the week were Watchmen & Ad Astra, but It 2 looks pretty great too.
I'd be excited for Andy Muschietti doing a Flash film if they didn't already fire two great choices, and if it didn't have a charisma vacuum as the lead.

Question regarding the X-Men books: how did things end up panning out with the original group that got brought from the past to the present? I see young Marvel Girl on one cover but what happened to the others (go back, killed off, replaced older counterparts, etc?

Congrats to Zdarsky! Guy has a lot of great books going right now along with Cates and Al Ewing. His Spider-man: Life Story mini is amazing, and the issue of spectacular that won him the award is easily one of the best single issues of Spider-man:

Do we think Brandon Routh will actually be playing an older Kingdom Come Superman or is it just going to be a Superman who happens to be rocking that particular S shield? I know it’s because they can’t get the Superman returns suit (probably to big for it now anyway) so I would think it’s just a fun nod for fans

Tom Cavanaugh will be Pariah? That's pretty awesome, considering in season 1 we all thought that might be who his character was (before he was revealed to be Thawne). I think the first or second episode he said something about being "a Pariah" and many theorized that's who his character was.

Also, I'm kind of disappointed the anti-monitor doesn't look much like this:

@tugboy - you have to remember that they’re still on a television budget. They can get close but something as elaborate like The Anti-Monitor will never be comic book faithful.

Is that Nate Grey or Cable on the cover of Fallen Angels.
And I’ve always wondered if the costumes in the Arrowverse are bulletproof or are they just leather jackets and pants?
Omegacron
Omegacron - 7/24/2019, 9:45 AM
@WruceBayne - I'm not up-to-date, but as far as I know Nate Grey doesn't have the cyborg arm. Presumably, then, it's a younger version of Cable?

Jonathan Hickman's X-Men reboot and Annihilation 2 is the best comic book news I've heard in ages.

Marvel is doing some good shit of late.

I'm so confused... Psylocke is back in her original body, but now she's Captain Britain? But she's on a different cover, still with the ninja chick's body? And Apocalypse is a good guy now and joined Excalibur? Whut...
