Is The DCU Already In Trouble? Things Are Said To Be Going Far From Smoothly At DC Studios

The DCU won't officially kick off (on the big screen, at least) until Superman: Legacy, but a new rumor is claiming that James Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted franchise may already be in trouble...

The news that Warner Bros. Discovery planned to essentially reboot its DC movie universe (unofficially dubbed the DCEU) with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as co-heads of the newly formed DC Studios seemed to go over pretty well with most fans, particularly those who were of the opinion that the franchise has been in dire need of an overhaul for many years.

Gunn announced quite a few projects as part of the "Gods and Monsters" slate, including Superman: Legacy, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Authority, Swamp Thing, as well as a number of HBO Max animated and live-action shows.

Gunn also clarified that this was only the first part of this slate, with many other projects to be added down the line.

The filmmaker has proven to be adept at juggling several different projects at once, but there was still some concern that he may have bitten off a bit more than he can chew - especially when you take into account that he is currently co-running a film studio while also writing and directing Superman: Legacy, and overseeing (or at least involved in) numerous other films and shows.

It's a lot, and it sounds like things may not be running as smoothly as Gunn would have us believe.

During this week's episode of The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider mentions that, according to his source, the DCU is a "mess." He doesn't share many other details, but does add that he's surprised other outlets haven't been reporting on what he's heard.

Honestly, if this is accurate, it wouldn't come as much of a surprise considering the amount of work involved in building an entire movie/TV universe, pretty much from the ground up - and it shouldn't necessarily be cause for concern.

There are bound to be a few teething problems while Gunn and Safran find their feet, and we can't imagine they went in thinking that they weren't going to encounter some major problems before this revamped franchise starts to take shape.

If things are even more chaotic than we realize, we might well hear something from the trades before too long. For now, we're going to remain optimistic, and at least wait and see how Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy progress before sounding the death knell for the DCU!

Forming, storming, forming, performing...

Look it up kids. No way forward is 100% smooth. Could be nothing.

Progress is not always linear.

Oh, and it's one anonymous source who just says "it's a mess".

@KaptainKhaos - This is one you could guess if not giving details considering the studio already ended up merging once, talks there will be another, this years CBM box office returns and all the normal sausage making process getting projects off the ground esp a large interconnected cinematic universe one with tie in TV, games, animations etc. Doesn't mean they can't or won't succeed but going to be a lot of wrinkles to iron out and obstacles to overcome in the best of sittuations.

If there’s any truth to this and I had to guess as to what’s going on , I’d wager cash WB is WB’n

I mean, I wish Gunn the best and I enjoy his movies, but his plans are flawed. Starting with characters that nobody has heard of and filling your Superman movie with thousand side characters ain't gonna help.

They just need to get superman right first, start with that then build. Don't try and take on to much at once.

I mean they walked into a 10 year mess, I doubt its going to be cleaned up fast.

The last writer/director they had head this whole thing was Zack Snyder. Take that for what its worth...

Did the scooper say more than "its a mess"? Or is that all we're going off here? I'd be interested in the other details if there are any because saying something is a mess without anything to back it up is more baseless than most of the rumours we hear.

@RedFury -
But is it a glorious mess?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/19/2024, 3:17 PM
@RedFury - it's probably just that. But it feels like anything this guys says is ''[insert project name here] is in trouble''. I don't buy it
RedFury
RedFury - 1/19/2024, 3:24 PM
@Goldboink - lol, it would add a little bit more context if they at least added glorious.
RedFury
RedFury - 1/19/2024, 3:27 PM
@bkmeijer1 - same here. If he's actually privy to real information, and is the first person to post about it; logically speaking he'd want to spill the beans and get those scooper brownie points they all seem to be after. But reporting something as a "mess" without expanding on why, just seems like another one of those "you can't prove I'm wrong." situations.

Hell, they are in the entertainment business. Adjectives please!
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/19/2024, 5:50 PM
@RedFury - exactly. The majority of these "scoops" feel like they're either just educated guesses or things that are logical. Solid enough to make sense, vague enough to deny them.

@bkmeijer1 - yeah thats it exactly. This new version of scooping reminds me of the creation of click bate. Another big step backwards in the world of journalism that's going to be cemented as a "legitimate strategy".

It seems like they’re trying to run before learning to walk. Let’s focus on getting superman right and then plan for down the road.

Not surprised. It rather feels like a staedy continuiation of all mistakes done before than a hard reboot based on the lessons learned in the last 10 years. I am looking forward to a proper DCCU in 10 to 15 years from now

I feel tricked into clicking on a rumour article. Has this guy ever been right?

Anyway, I doubt it. Gunn had one year and has another left to figure everything out. Should be doable, especially give how few projects actually have release dates attached to them.
HeeroG
HeeroG - 1/19/2024, 3:29 PM
He says it's a mess, but doesn't have any details to share on it.
He wonders why other outlets are not reporting on it. Maybe it's because there is nothing to report since this seem to be some made up bs, so he can claim he have a scoop.
JohnBoyGoodBoy
JohnBoyGoodBoy - 1/19/2024, 3:32 PM
Some guy says a single word "mess", no other context or information, and no corroborating sources. Sounds like a legitimate scoop!!
