Ethan Hawke Interested In DOCTOR STRANGE Role; Praises Director Scott Derrickson

Ethan Hawke worked with director Scott Derrickson on Sinister and has recently been rumoured to be in the running for the lead role in Doctor Strange by an extremly unreliable site (if you got your hopes up that it was true, Variety's Marc Graser has already debunked it). In the following interview with MTV News, Hawke confirms that he would be very interested in playing the Marvel character if the filmmaker were to offer it to him. However, it's also clear that he hasn't been approached and while his interest and enthusiasm is great to see...he's no Joaquin Phoenix in all honesty!

I think it could work but part of me doesn't feel right about the idea of Ethan. He's a great actor but it just doesn't seem to click for Strange. I've been wrong about Marvel casting before though.

Not sure about Ethan Hawke yet. He is a good actor. I would like someone who has an exotic otherwordly look if possible.

To say Ethan Hawke is pretentious and saying phoenix is not is just idiotic. I guess you guys didnt see im still here phoenix is a pre madonna douche bag that wouldnt be caught near a comic film. Hes pretentious when Hawke is a talented everyman whos been great all his films(though im a fan of his 90s films.) While I do enjoy phoenix's work. He is not right for any comic role because he is in all honesty an asshole who doesnt give a shit about his fans or image.

Phoenix is a lifeless dud onscreen. How could he give humor to Strange when needed?

Hawke is probably better suited for the requirements of the part.

Hawke fits Marvel world much more than Phoenix.

Joaquin was too ambitious of an idea, and most of us kind of knew he wouldnt be interested in a multipicture deal.

Ethan on other hand, is a pretty solid choice and would stay more than happy, so... Im all for it

My only reason for not being excited about phoenix is if he's not committed to doing multiple pictures like 6 or more. From what I read that's one of the major hiccups in this deal. I hope I'm wrong, phoenix would be an amazing Dr strange but Ethan Hawke with Scott derrickson directing wouldn't be too bad either.
