We've heard a lot about Eternals being a love story, and it's no secret that Ikaris, Sersi, and Dane Whitman promise to be at the centre of it. It feels like Marvel Studios has gone to great lengths to keep Kit Harington's role under wraps, and the prevailing theory is that it's because we'll see him suit up as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Knight.
While it could certainly happen down the line, producer Nate Moore told ComicBook.com on the set of the movie a couple of years ago that the transformation won't necessarily happen here.
"You won't see the Ebony Blade in this movie," he confirmed. "He's not going to be Black Knight necessarily, but that is something that we get to play with down the road." Moore went on to say that, "[We] very much explored the relationship between Dane Whitman and Sersi."
Unless this is a complete misdirect, it's definitely disappointing to learn that there's no place for the Ebony Blade (the source of Dane's powers) in Eternals. Despite that, it does sound like the movie will at least set the stage for Black Knight's MCU arrival, and the plan could be to completely reinvent the hero's origin for the big screen.
There's a lot of story to tell in this latest Phase 4 movie, so Black Knight being sidelined might have been an inevitability. There's not much longer to go until we get to find out, of course, and based on director Chloé Zhao's recent comments, this could be something that plays out in one of those post-credits scenes.
Eternals is set to be released exclusively in theaters on November 5.
