Update On THE DARK TOWER Cineamtic Plans

Producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer have been trying to find a home for their ambitious film and television plans for Stephen King's The Dark Tower for quite some time. Are they close to having their original plan funded?

The Dark Tower is a series of novels from celebrated author Stephen King that mixes a number of genres (western, fantasy, sci-fi, horror) into one incredibly satisfying read. For nearly three years, Howard and Grazer have been approaching one studio after the next, looking to find a backer for their plans of adapting King's fantasy saga into a series of films with a television show that continues the story between movies. According to Deadline, Howard and Grazer are currently at the Cannes Film Festival looking to secure financial backing for a number of projects currently on their film slate and The Dark Tower happens to be one of those films. Reportedly, Grazer and Howard are in talks with a 'Silicone Valley investor" who is keen on putting up the money to see the duo's original vision come to life. Currently, that plan includes Russell Crowe (Man of Steel) to assume the lead role of gunslinger, Roland Deschain. Media Rights Capital was the latest studio to express interest in the project but they were only willing to commit to one film upfront, with more contingent upon box office reception.

THE DARK TOWER Filming Saga:
- Back in 2009 J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof were attached to a planned adaptation that was set to begin once Lost ended. However, later that year the duo announced they were backing off the project for undisclosed reasons.
- In 2010, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer secured film rights and announced their ambitious plan with Universal Pictures for several films and a television show that would bridge the gap between each film.
- A release date was set for 2013.
- Later that year Javier Bardem, Christian Bale and Viggo Mortensen were announced as the frontrunners for the lead role of Roland Deschain, with Javier Bardem eventually winning out.
-Naomie Harris was also rumored for the role of Susannah Dean. But that was never confirmed.
- In 2011, Universal put the project on hold due to cost concerns.
- Later in 2011, the project landed at HBO but only the tv portion. Howard and Grazer were still searching for a home for the film component.
- In 2012, Warner Bros. expressed interest but with Russell Crowe in the lead, not Javier Bardem.
- But later in 2012, Warner Bros. dropped out just like Universal.
- However Media Rights Capital quickly stepped in and expressed strong interest in producing a film.
- Earlier in 2013, Netflix expressed interest in assuming the television portion of Howard and Grazer's plans and confirmed that more serious talks would occur once Arrested Development finished filming.

The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum. It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.

Inspired in equal parts by Robert Browning’s poem, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,” J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings, and Sergio Leone’s spaghetti Western classics, The Dark Tower series is an epic of Arthurian proportions. It is Stephen King’s magnum opus, and is the center of his amazing creative universe.

If Clint Eastwood were younger he would have been the perfect Roland.

Roland's physical appearance was based on Eastwood, king said so. (bet he's regretting it now after the empty chair speech).
If they do get this going they might want to stop after book 5. King lost his way and turned the series into a joke at the end. Unless he rewrites it, I'd probably not watch any adaption after book 4 myself, unless it was spectacular.

I've only read the first 3 books but I'm hearing mixed things about rest of the books so I'm kinda afraid to read the others.

I would love to see this book turned into a movie. I have been waiting years so I hope it happens some day soon. I thought after The Lord of the Rings WB would have made this series into a film but I guess not.

I also hope Obsidian games makes a RPG version of Dark Tower some day too.

Howard did not want to compromise his vision of minseries/films and held out on major studios to go with these groups?!

Im all for Dark Tower movie.

Give the lead role to James Caviezel, Hugh Jackman or Thomas Jane. Crowe doesnt feel ideal for the role. Sure he is famous and big audience magnet but surely the movie itself would draw enough audience. Just make it right. I dont ask anything else.

your choices are crap for Roland. Viggo or gtfo.
theyre further along in planning the DT then they let on btw.
jj abrams just moved to camden maine, and Sai King bought the tract
of land up in northern maine surrounding Gilead Maine (a real place btw)
where theoretically the end game of the books took place.

I wouldnt count jj our from playing some sort of role in all of this.
the only reason he didnt want to after doing LOST was because of how redundant it would be. LOST was basically based on the DT. King basically ghost wrote the last 3 seasons of the show, they basically even used the same 'hot chocolate' ending for the tv series.

Roland was based on Eastwood, King said it himself, the genesis for his work was Eastwood's Spaghetti western trilogy. Unfortunately, he's too old to play Roland now. Never though about Crowe but I think he could do a good job. Viggo Mortensen would have been my preferred choice based on previous rumours but Crowe has gravitas and I could picture him as Roland.

As much as I like Javier Bardem, and I think he's an absolutely brilliant actor (mainly based on his spanish speaking movies, and his terrific performance in Skyfall), he's not Roland.

Long days and pleasant nights :)

Please not Crowe. I'd rather see Elmo the gunslinger than that guy. If he's in I simply won't see this movie. Well I won't pay to see it.

Somebody up there ^ said they read the first three, but are scared to read the rest. You probobly shouldn't finish them because of your not hooked or at all curious how the rest of the story goes, then it's not for you. Scared to finish....WTF

Crowe is cool and all, and I can't wait to see him as Jor-El, but Roland is not a short burly guy. Crowe could never be referred to as "Ol' Long Tall and Ugly"

Wow, this has been development hell for a while now. Haven't read the books yet, but people seem to have a passion for them. Just wanna see how the film/tv show idea will work. That's the most interesting thing about this to me.

I think Crowe would do just fine. Remember, Gunslingers in the DT series aren't just drunken shoot'm up types, they're knights so there's a sort of Shakespearean aspect to Roland's character. Especially when you consider he's descended from Arthur Eld himself. Roland might be the baddest badass ever but he's also kinda royalty. Whoever they decide on will need to be able to convey that quiet, badass minimalism as well as the majesty Roland can portray. Remember when he stood up to Blain in The Wastelands " “Kill if you will, but command me nothing!”? Epic!!!
