BOX OFFICE: JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Tracking Hints At A Disappointing Weekend
Director Bryan Singer's twist on the classic fairy tale is not tracking well in the build up to its release on March 1st, with analyst predicting a soft opening similar to that of 2012 box office flops Battleship and John Carter. Read on for details!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jack the Giant Slayer's pre-release tracking has the fantasy adventure down as making only between $30 million to $35 million during its opening weekend in North America. With a budget of $190 million and some hefty marketing costs, numbers like this - which are almost identical to big budget box office flops Battleship and John Carter - mean that the pressure would be on for it to perform well in international markets. However, there's nothing to say that these numbers won't improve as the March 1st release dates draws near, especially as the studio are planning an 11th hour advertising blitz. Test screenings and media screenings have also gone well according to insiders at New Line and Warner Bros. Perhaps the biggest hurdle for Jack the Giant Slayer is the fact that Disney's Oz: The Great and Powerful opens just one week later. That is tracking at around the $75 million range, although many believe it could open even higher.
Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.
