High-Frame-Rate Version Of THE HOBBIT To Be Released In Limited Number Of Locations

When the 48 frames-per-second version of The Hobbit footage was screened at CinemaCon earlier this year, it was met with a mixed reaction from those in attendance. Regardless, it now appears as if only a few select fans will be able to see it for themselves.

Showblitz reports that despite Warner Bros.' confidence in high-frame-rate movies, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will only have a limited release in the format. Despite a mixed reaction at CinemaCon earlier this year, the film now looks much better according to their sources, but the studio are still wary of giving it a wide release. Unfortunately for fans, this means that it may not even make it into all the major cities. Part of the reason for this is that some theatres simply aren't equipped for the HFR projection (although that may be sorted for some with a software upgrade next month). If The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey gets a good reception from moviegoers, it's likely that the studio would increase the release of the second and third instalments in the HFR format.

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

This is probably a good idea to test the market response first, then if it's positive they should implement it in more theaters. I hope it'll be playing somewhere near me though

Cool banner. I'm very curious to see what this 48fps looks like. I gather it's a bit like watching a blu-ray on an HD screen for the first time. It was a bit jarring the first time I watched a movie like that. There was so much definition it looked weird. But it didn't take long to adjust.

I'd like to see it in 48fps (dearly hope they don't start charging extra for higher frame-rate films like they do with 3D).

Since the movie experience is different with a higher frame rate, they will likely charge extra. I wonder how it'll look like. Hmm...

Don't care about the frame-rate. DO care about how that modest book has turned into 3 movies.

As far as I understand, the 48 fps. Is supposed to make the 3D much smoother so I definitely hope to see it with the higher frame rate. Either way though, I can't freaking wait for this film!

@Intruder
I get your point; it's a valid one. I meant modest only in number of pages. I'm just wondering how much embellishing will have to be done to pull out three movies, is all.
Respectfully, I don't find it more interesting than LOTR, but, that's just me.

When i watch something in high frame rate it gives a films a strangly artificial look and takes away from the intended lighting and cinematography. Its interesting way to view a movie like Tron. I prefer the slower frame rate.

gaikinger - 8/7/2012, 9:41 PM
@intruder- concider...with the splitting of material into three films, do you think their will be extended and regular cuts of the film when they come to Bluray? If so, will the extended cuts be as lengthy as we've come to expect?
UrbanKnight

I dont really like video shot in a faster frame rate. Looks weird. TOO smooth or stable, robotic. Dont know what it is, just weird. Tried getting use to it but cant.
It might be cool for 3d but then you get a smaller dimmer image.

Maybe an even faster frame rate might make it more natural looking but for now seems like its either too fast or not fast enough. Somewhere in between.

Either way i do want to see this.

No need, there's plenty of third age stuff to fill 3 movies with the Dwarf based history around Erebor, Moria and the fall of the kings of Gondor and Rohan let alone the rise of Sauron under the disguise as the Necromancer.
Ceejay
Ceejay - 8/7/2012, 10:19 PM
Make that two of us, it's not unfilmable but it take a great many films to tell the entire story of the Silmarillion. Just like the Hobbit, it may just be one book of lesser pagers but it contains more story than the entire three books of LOTR.

@Intruder, You will care about frame rates once you see how much 48fps can ruin something.

As someone who understands the tech, frame rates, and look... not interested at all. Gimme beautiful 2D 24fps any day. The reason we've used that specific frame rate for film for decades is because that's what "looks" like film. No matter what shutter angle tricks you do... 48fps doesn't look right. It'll end up looking like PAL. The only thing 48fps helps with is making 3D a little less blurry (which is why the industry is pushing it - 3D equals moola.

As a giant Tolkien nerd, I would kill to see all of that stuff Intruder mentioned from the Silmarillion and the First Age on the big screen. Not in the Hobbit movies, mind you, but in their own movies.

Too bad it'll probably never happen. Tolkien's family are pretty adamant about never selling the rights to the Silmarillion or anything else. They can`t do anything about The Hobbit or LOTR, since Tolkien himself sold those movie rights while he was alive, but everything else was published by his son Christopher Tolkien, and he aint sellin.

Which is also why everyone is concerned about the 3rd Hobbit movie. They have the rights to the Appendices in Return of the King, but not to the material in the Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales. So there`s a lot that they`re not gonna be able to use.

I was placed into the Hall of Shame by somebody called @Stilkenator89 for my postings on the Obama thread. If you look at the comments of concern, the reaction is beyond rediculous. I'm thinking it was @fettastic, but could be @Intruder or even @Godzillafart with an alias. pretty sad, pretty sad.
