Peter Jackson Talks THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Extended Cut

Peter Jackson dishes on what extra material fans can expect to see in the upcoming extended cut of the movie, and how it will connect to The Desolation of Smaug this December. Click for more.

"You are going to get some serious Dwarvish disrespect of the elves at Rivendell," says Jackson, echoing what he previously said to us during our Unexpected Journey video interviews (see below).

"You are going to get more of Hobbiton," says producer / co-writer Philippa Boyens. "We always wanted to wend our way through Hobbiton, but in the end Bilbo has to run out of the door."

"You are going to get more Goblin Town, and the Great Goblin singing his song," adds Fran Walsh, Jackson's other half and fellow screenwriter. "It is a great song, but it was just another delay in terms of moving the story along."

"A number one hit from the Goblin King," laughs Jackson. "Barry Humphries is going to rise up the charts."

"We are putting things in the extended cut that are going to play straight into the second film," explains Jackson, "like this character Girion, who is defending [the city of] Dale using black arrows against Smaug. And the black arrows play a part in an ongoing story, for they are the one thing that can pierce the dragon's hide."

"There are also issues with [king of the elves] Thranduil (Lee Pace)," Jackson adds. "We get some of the reason why he and the dwarves had a falling out - to do with these white gems..."

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Cut is due out a month before the Desolation of Smaug's release.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug comes to theaters December 13th 2013

This is why I waited on picking it. Because I knew a better version would come out later.

I expected this.... and i love the LOTR extended cuts, but seriously?????

the Hobbit is already a small book that they greedily and unnecessarily broke up into THREE movies. How much can they milk from that tiny book?

So it's November when this is coming out? Any word on if it will be available in 48fps?

I fully expect that this extended cut will be worth the wait, just as it was for the LOTR films.

I always wait for PJ to release his extended editions. All of the LOTR films were bettered by their Extended Cuts.

the theatrical cut was already too long

gmoney84- normally i agree. But The Hobbit book doesnt have enough story for 3 extended cut movies. It will be dull stretched out sequences.

Once all three are out, it would actually be BETTER to have a re-edited smaller single movie utilizing footage from all three movies to make a succinct, powerful, Hobbit adaptation

Splenda@ Agree

Frodo scenes specially were totally pointless.

LOTR extended cuts were cool but i dont think Hobbit needs it.

Can this story be more extended? I really trust in Peter Jackson, but his decisions have not been really smart recently. However I'm giving a chance to it.

I picked up the just the bare bones DVD cause I knew I would be grabbing this when it came out. Plus who could wait a yaer without seeing the first one again before "Desolation" came out?

the extended editions of LOTR were good because the characters got more screen time and those moments were useful for the plot, especially in the last one.

Only reason I didn't buy the theatrical cuts on Blu Ray was because I knew I'll be paying full price for the extended and will pick up the theatricals dirt cheap in some cut -price box set later down the line.

This news made my day!

I presented the LOTR Extended Editions to my kids over 12 nights spread over 3 weeks. We watched only about an hour a night. This was a unique way for them to experience the series for the first time -- bite-sized chunks rather than huge swaths of story all at once. They loved the movies. I imagine that by the end they felt like they'd watched a full season of a TV show.

I admit I could barely sit through THE HOBBIT when I rented it recently, and I'm glad my kids didn't watch it with me. But I have a feeling the extended editions of the movie and its sequels will benefit from the one-hour-a-day viewing program I did with LOTR.

It's a shame we didn't get a proper extended cut released at the theater. The full versions are always way better than the theatrical versions.

This will be 24 fps as bluray only supports 24 and not 48 fPS .

I think I'm more interested in a "Concise" or shortened cut! Enjoyed the movie, just felt it was kinda padded

The first one already felt like it had been stretched to within an inch of it's life, I honestly don't understand how they can release an extended version of it! And this is coming from someone who loves the extended LOTR trilogy.

I liked The Hobbit Part I, but it was way too long.

I didn't find The Hobbit Part 1 to be any longer than the Lord of the Rings films.
ISleepNow
ISleepNow - 6/25/2013, 7:15 PM
@Gmoney84 The extended cuts for the Lord of the Rings movies were relevant in filling out the story. With the Hobbit, they merely add to the padding

But will there be an extended version in 3D?
Or will that come out later in 2014 in a "Director's Cut" so we have to buy even ANOTHER version?

@fettastic: thanks for answering my question. Wasn't aware that modern TV's can't reproduce 48fps.
