Stephen King's Dark Tower Will Be A Movie AND A TV Series

According to Deadline, King's much loved novels and comics will make history as they hit the big screen, while also featuring in a network TV adaptation!..

Thats right Gunslinger fans, Roland will finally make his big..and small screen debut. Deadline reveal that Ron Howard and Universal are bringing together a movie trilogy and tv series based on the characters exploits in The Dark Tower saga..

Universal Pictures and NBC Universal Television Entertainment have closed a deal to turn Stephen King’s mammoth novel series The Dark Tower into a feature film trilogy and a network TV series, both of which will be creatively steered by the Oscar-winning team behind A Beautiful Mind and The Da Vinci Code.

Ron Howard has committed to direct the initial feature film, as well as the first season of the TV series that will follow in close proximity. Akiva Goldsman will write the film, and the first season of the TV series. Howard’s Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer will produce, with Goldsman and the author.

Apparently the plan is to start with the first film in the trilogy and link the following films with a season of Tv episodes between them. The trilogy being shot so close together is reminiscent of another beloved fantasy novel's adaptation at the hands of Peter Jackson. Speaking to Deadline, director Ron Howard acknowledges and welcomes the LOTR comparison...

“What Peter did was a feat, cinematic history. The approach we’re taking also stands on its own, but it’s driven by the material. I love both, and like what’s going on in TV. With this story, if you dedicated to one medium or another, there’s the horrible risk of cheating material. The scope and scale call for a big screen budget. But if you committed only to films, you’d deny the audience the intimacy and nuance of some of these characters and a lot of cool twists and turns that make for jaw-dropping, compelling television. We’ve put some real time and deep thought into this, and a lot of conversations and analysis from a business standpoint, to get people to believe in this and take this leap with us. I hope audiences respond to it in a way that compels us to keep going after the first year or two of work. It’s fresh territory for me, as a filmmaker.”

Big news for fans of these great books. But is Howard the right guy for this job? At the very least you can't help but admire his, and Universal's scope. Nothing like this has ever been attempted and by realizing that the story needs to be told over 3 movies and 3 tv seasons they have sold me on their passion do do this right. If only Preacher could get teh same treatment!

The dark tower series was such an awesome read. There are a lot of people that love the story and that wanna see it done right.
I hope this might possibly be a solution to it.

And they'd better do some damn good casting!
(clint eastwood :P, although he might be a bit to old)

This sounds great, but I can see some problems.

First, you're going to have to find an actor who is going to be willing to tie himself exclusively to a film and TV series for a number of years. Also, they're starting with the movie, so they're obviously going to want an actor who is somewhat known. And then he has to be on TV.

Then there's the difficulties of an actor having to film a TV series, then a feature film.Where would you get the time?

Next, I'm not sure what the schedule of the TV show will be, but audiences are going to have to watch a movie to follow the TV show, and vice versa.

Good stuff ROR! :) I'm a massive Stephen King fan but this is one series of books I've never gotten around to reading! Guess I'd better get a move on with this particular piece of news. Personally, I'm still hoping for an adaptation of Cell...that would be one of the greatest zombie films ever with the right director and cast IMO!

WOW. Tying the movies together with seasons of a TV series is an awesome idea, but I think there is a reason it hasn't been done before. The logistics have to be a nightmare.

I own the first book of this series but haven't read it. Not a big King fan. Is it any less depressing and bleak than his straight horror?

The short answer is no.The things that Roland goes through involving his family, friends and lovers, as well as his quest are very depressing. But it's an interesting kind of depressing.

I imagined Viggo as Roland´s father, Steven Deschain, but he would be a great as adult Roland too!:)

Daniel Day-Lewis or John Malkovich as The Crimson King
Gary Oldman as The Man In Black aka Marten Broadcloak aka Randall Flagg.

Fantastic book series. I worry that network tv won't allow for some of the more mature material there by making the tv show something lesser than the epic scale movies can be. Howard's a good guy for something like this though. I hope this doesn't cheapen the story none, in my expeirence books are always better than the movie remakes. I do hope they change the ending, I felt alittle cheated by it after reading all those books.

Its good to see outside the box thinking with movies these days, with prequills and solo movies being made for individual charecters only to bring them together in a later movie and now this movie/tv show partnership.
Great time to be alive for movie fans eh?

Awesome freakin news! I know they will stray a bit from the novels, but that is always expected with movie adaptations. Viggo would be a good Roland, but I know there is gotta be someone else out there that with a darker soul than Viggo. Too bad we can't wind back the clock 40 years on Eastwood. He has got that shit eating look that says it all with out ever having to speak a line. Greatest movie news I have heard in a while.

Some thoughts...
This will be awesome!

The actor in the TV series will most likely be different then the one in the films.

Viggo Mortensen is 52 , he’s probably to old to commit to a project like this.

Maybe Josh Brolin could work, is only 48… could commit to this, he’s an awsome actor even though Jonah hex sucked.

Hugh Jackman would also be perfect for Roland...

It really wouldn't really make sense to have two seperate actors playing Roland, unless the film series involved the younger version of the character.

But yes, you will need an actor who would commit to a series.

@Suede-Viggo's the PERFECT choice! Always pictured him as Roland. And I'm excited about this, loved the series but really hated how it ended.

How about Timothy Olyphant as Roland. He was baddass as
the sheriff in Deadwood. He could probably do Eddie too. Thomas Jane would be cool as Roland too.

Great post Ror! %$!in’ A, I’ve been wanting to hear this forever!

While I would have preferred JJ Abrams at the helm, I don’t think Ron Howard is a bad choice.

For those of you who haven’t read the books, I would highly suggest picking up the Gunslinger and at least give it a shot (it was written well before Kings later, more well known titles. thats a good thing).

I’m very intrigued by the plan in regards to the shooting, and I see both pros and cons. The thing that excites me the most about the idea is that the fact that we won’t have to wait a year between installments. The films will obviously contain major events and the series would then fill in the gaps in a sense. I could see the Story of Roland’s life from Wizard and Glass, being an entire season of a TV series. That would then give the film leads at least what…….4-8 months off???

This all sounds very demanding but with the right cast it could be epic.

No Viggo or Jackman though.
MAYBE Eastwood for Roland’s father...

For those who haven't read these books, I recommend you audio book em, you'll get thru them faster and the the narrators for the storys are two of the better readers out there. Frank Mueller bieng one of the best ever.

I just love the innovation of what they're trying - using feature films and big screen budgets to tell the major storylines, while turning to TV as an opportunity to do season-long flashbacks and flesh things out further before returning to the big screen. That's simply brilliant. No way to know if the audience will go for it or not, because it's never been done.

They might be better off doing 6 - 13 episodes rather than 22 so as to not burn out the cast and creators as well as the audience.

Can't wait to see how this one shakes out.

I've never read the books but I'll try to. The only copies that my library has are parts 4 and 5 or 6. I want to read something like this straight from the beginning! :)

@EdGross
It does sound crazy, but who knows. Things happen, even if there is a great probability it might not. Better for the TV series if they went with small eps like you pointed out. Can't see it stretch into 22. Could see it as a type of mini-series though. They could follow characters (big and small form this universe/multiverse) and extend them to where it isn't making it up as it goes or cheating the fans or the mythology. But it's still great to hear all of this. Can't wait either.

@RorMachine
This truly sounds like a possible epic in the making! :)

Never read this but the idea of this being a movie and a tv show sounds interesting, and with Ron Howard attached it could be good.

Okay, check out this from Wikepedia:

"Stephen King stated in interviews, as well as in forewords and afterwords for the respective books, that one of the inspirations for Roland Deschain, a.k.a. Roland of Gilead, the Gunslinger in his popular The Dark Tower opus, is Clint Eastwood. He said that Roland is meant to embody a gritty, melancholy persona, like that of Eastwood's "The Man With No Name" in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."

Now, look at this:

Jackman is perfect!!!!!!!!!

Since I've finished all the books, my thought for a movie version of "Roland" would be (anticipating hatred here)-
Hugh Laurie (Dr. House). I realize this comes as a great shock to many but I think he fits the description of Roland in the books as well as Clint (but, let's face it, that isn't going to happen). He can be just as heartless & cruel as Roland, yet kind & solemn when the moment calls for it.
gibbyblaylock
gibbyblaylock - 9/8/2010, 9:55 PM
ALSO, I realize that many people maintain that Roland should be older, so here's my top choice if they decide to go for an older actor to play Roland:

ROBERT PATRICK (Terminator 2, X-files)
RyKnow
RyKnow - 9/9/2010, 2:17 AM
@ gibbyblayblock - Excellent choice for Robert Patrick as Roland! When reading the books, I always envisioned Roland as a kind of over the hill, burnt out kind of guy (Michael Douglas kept popping into my head!!) but yours is a far better choice! Kudos!
A lot of people say Viggo Mortensen or Hugh Jackman, but if you've read the books, it tells you that Roland is more or less an old man (not a pensioner however lol) and those two actors look too young and don't look weathered enough. And to answer tazmaniacs question of which actor could do both the tv series AND the films, well, Robert Patrick is you're man. He's already an actor who's done plenty of film and tv.
I'm hoping Ron Howard stays on board to make this work. For people who think he can't do suspense and action, just take a look at Ransom. Awesome film!!!
