Why Did Clash Of The Titans Go So Wrong?

Why Did Clash Of The Titans Go So Wrong?

If you were as disappointed by Clash as I was this is worth a read. Devin Faraci over at C.H.U.D has uncovered some details about the final cut of the movie we could have had...

Anyone can see by watching Clash that something went wrong somewhere in the edit. Faraci has done some investigating and uncovered some very interesting things. Its a very long article so I'll just post some highlights, but be sure to click on the link below to check out the whole thing.

...Probably the most interesting thing I learned is that there's a significantly different cut of the film in the vault. Louis Leterrier's original version of Clash of the Titans differs from what's playing in theaters in some fairly major ways, and while some of it could be restored for the DVD release, much of it would need extra FX work and would drastically change the plot of the film. Unlike last summer's Terminator Salvation, which got messed around with in the script stage and on set, Clash of the Titans was largely changed after principal photography through editing and some widely reported reshoots - all of which included Leterrier.

It should go without saying that this article will contain spoilers for Clash of the Titans, so if you haven't seen the movie please stop reading now.

The most drastic changes in the film come at the expense of the gods. Many watching the movie wonder why Danny Huston would have been hired to play Poseidon when he has almost absolutely nothing to do in the film; the answer is that nearly two thirds of the business with the gods was edited out of the film, and the very tenor of the god scenes was changed in fundamental ways....

..These changes are, technically, minor - but they add up in a big way. The theatrical cut of the movie repositions Zeus from a more villainous character to a bumbling but sympathetic distant dad. Yeah, maybe he raped Perseus' mom, but he's not that bad a guy, and he's there for his son in the end. By making some judicious cuts and reshooting only a few scenes, the current cut of Clash betrays the spirit of the shooting script...

..All of those changes to theme and to the central concept of the gods necessitated a change in the ending. The final scene of the theatrical cut is, frankly, disastrous - not only is Perseus suddenly best buddies with Zeus, but Io, who had previously called eternal life a curse, is resurrected in what we're supposed to accept as a happy ending. None of this could be farther from the ending of the original script and, presumably, Leterrier's first cut of the film....

So, maybe there is a directors cut of the movie in our future? There was stuff in Clash that I did enjoy so if one day we do get a longer, better cut I'll give it another chance. Until then, the lesson of the day is grow some balls and don't let studios [frick] with your movie! But seriously, its very interesting to me why this was done and why it continues to be done to movies in the edit and even sometimes in the production stage. I mean we all know that studios generally consider everyone who watches movies to be drooling peons with the attention span of 2 year old and will produce and market their movies accordingly given half a chance..but surely SOMEONE somewhere on the inside track of where these ridiculous decisions are made knows better? Anyway, to paraphrase a quote from Clash, one day someone will have to take a stand, one day someone will say enough! Or, y'know, not. The film made a rake of cash so as far as everyone involved with churning it out is concerned it was a success and thats all there is to it.

The 3-D was garbage, plot was stupid and I expected more from Neeson and Fiennes.

BTW, does anyone know what is going on with the Jonah Hex film...I mean it's coming out on June 18,and we still don't have nothing but that teaser poster...

I felt like the movie was a waste of time and i don't know how it would have turned out if it had been the original cut that was released into theatres but the original doesn't sound too much better...
ugh...what a bad movie....

I enjoyed the movie (it was entertaining although nothing special) but this article brings up a lot of interesting points and really makes me think about how much better it could have been..! :P

I read the movie wasn't even filmed in 3-D, and they just forced it to be. Sounds like there was a lot of creative interference, but maybe Leterrier is a pushover. This would be the second time after TIH.
Livasnaps
Livasnaps - 4/11/2010, 11:29 AM
At least with TIH, he had Marvel telling him what to do; guys who actually CARE about the material and know their shit. We got a pretty damn good movie as a result.

In this instance...it just smacked of missed potential. I saw a link to this article on Ain't It Cool a couple days ago, and it's a GREAT read. If they had released that cut instead of the current one, this movie would have been the one I had hoped for and not what I got. It seemed a lot more faithful to both the original Perseus myth and the first movie.

This film is the very reason that in most cases the original is the best.

It could have been better? This is why Lettirier shouldn't do Avengers. We need Branagh!!!

This movie was good but it was a failure from what it should have been. It was a pretty good action flick, fast passed, tough, and entertaining. Yet I was looking for and felt it should have been more of an Epic film. It really didnt let alot of the plot and or scenes develop it really sped through and over things.

Terrible movie, the editing problem was one of the big reasons why I didn't like it. The gods being excluded from most of the film was another issue for me. Oh well, I'll just wait for the God of War movies then.

i liked it and my brother who bashed it from watching the trailer finally liked it too. but i felt there were things missing and the plot was too fast.should have been over 2 hrs long.as for the 3d...it sucked. i left the theater wanting more. more god scenes, more...everything...but i liked it...it had potential to be one of the best epic movies but...

haha, Tea I was hoping you would spot that;)..I'm sure Superdog will be worried too. I'm supposed to be Outlaw(sort of) and the dog is Barnabas.. here's Delirium and Hob Gadling. Of course if you haven't read Sandman you won't have any idea who they are!

Nah, its really not set anywhere in particular from the comic, its just a jumble of characters and visuals set to music..its actually a load of bollocks from a narrative standpoint! haha.

I liked the Movie. I didn't love the movie, it could've been better. Ok, what I'm about say goes for all the movies we like to see lately. When we are younger we basically have no expectations. We just want to be entertained and in awe. That's why the classics are so much more amazing than the movies we see today. We now have high expectations about the movies we see. It is so hard to please us and blow us away like when we were younger. In an age of CGI, high def and 3D, we basically seen and heard it all. So we are craving that sensation and butterflies we got when we were younger. We need to go into a movie with low expectations and a clear mind. Then we can come out with a true feeling about the movie.

i enjoyed the movie, but it could have been alot better. i agree with Denn1s i left the theater wanting more and the 3d did suck. i will see a sequel (if it is made) but i want to see this directors cut, first. also, good luck on your short film @Ror. ;)

i thought it was a aright film, i could have been alot better, but i would watch some sequels.and zeus was actually like that in the greek mythos.the thing i do not get is why we did not get to see more of the gods, like poseidon, aries, hera, apollo, aprodite, athena, and the others, and it would have been cool to actually see hydras, chimeras, giants, giant animals, and centaurs.also medusa was created because they say she was more beuatiful then aprodite, and in this film it was changed. over all though it was a good film but not great. and i hope they do sequels and have more of the gods in them and some really cool creatures that i mentioned above.

IT PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE ORIGINAL... THE ORIGINAL HAD A LOVE STORY , HAD A JOURNEY, HAD A BETTER CLASSIC FEEL TO IT....YEA THE NEW ONE'S FX...AWSOME BUT WHAT SPECIAL PUMPED UP WITH CGI VISUALS DOESN'T GIVE YOU THAT GOLD STORY...

Perhaps a Director's cut would redeem Leterrier's reputation after this. It also may not be the studio's fault. They may have to fire the editors.
Ror, at the end of the day, the studio has the bulk of the money that finances the film, therefore, they have the final say. But again, it may not have been them that did this, but the oft overlooked editing agency. There is nothing that anyone can do except create their own studio from the ground up. Even Marvel had to give themselves over to Disney. Its just the fallen nature of things.

Pine, sadly that can be the case but only because directors and producers cave. There are different deals with different projects of course, but could you imagine any studio telling Martin Scorsese or Stephen Spielberg how to cut their film? Granted they have built a reputation and won't be [frick]ed with, but even a first timer can put his foot down, it just gets messy so a lot of the time they roll over . Also, most of the time a director will always work right beside his editor..again, depending on the studio and the director of course. Studios can make mince meat of movies but there are ways to stop them if directors are really passionate about their vision. Michael Cimino threatened to burn every reel of film of Heavens gate unless he got final cut.

Cheers Elbeaster, Tea. Its really not great..and i'm not just trying to be humble, I didn't get enough shots and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but my excuse is that its a music video:) Anyway I'll post it as soon as its ready.

It was what i expected it to be, an action flick that should have been more plot driven but wasnt because very few people appreciate a decent plot and character development.

I knew from the second that they changed it to 3D halfway through the filming and they most likely did this because Sam Worthington was the star in Avatar which was also 3D

It's interesting to know. After I saw it, I had the feeling that it could have been much better. One of the things it was missing was a more well developed plot. A directors cut version of this might actually be a decent movie.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 4/11/2010, 3:13 PM
But it wasn't that the plot wasn't well developed, it didn't make a lick of sense! A lack of real development in both plot and characters is normal in action driven films but if they are as jumbled up and silly as this there is no excuse. I was just left there shaking my head at certain parts. I think either the editor chopped it up for shits and giggles or LL just didn't shoot enough footage..although according to this he shot more than enough. I dunno.
Macksimus
Macksimus - 4/11/2010, 3:16 PM
He's right; the studios do need to back off sometimes. Just look at how good Avatar was, where Cameron had complete control over the film.

The only instance when Studios should have MORE control is when they have a higher level of technical understanding of the material being covered in the movie; Marvel is a good example of this. Marvel knows more about their characters and stories than the directors. Therefore, they should have a significant amount of creative control with regard to making the film.
