Nicolas Cage Talks GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE

Talking with Empire about several projects he has worked on, the actor talked about what it was like to play Johnny Blaze again, as well as actually playing the Ghost Rider for the first time.

What were the biggest challenges physically or psychologically to perform both parts of John Blaze and Ghost Rider?

It was the first time that I played Ghost Rider. Blaze was easy; I knew he was a man who had been living with a curse for eight years of having his head light on fire, and the tone that would take. I compared him to a cop, or a paramedic who develops a dark sense of humour to cope with the horrors he has seen. But Blaze has also caused the horrors, so he's hiding out because he doesn't want to hurt anyone else.

Ghost Rider was an entirely new experience, and he got me thinking about something I read in a book called The Way Of Wyrd by Brian Bates, and he also wrote a book called The Way Of The Actor. He put forth the concept that all actors, whether they know it or not, stem from thousands of years ago – pre-Christian times – when they were the medicine men or shamans of the village. And these shamans, who by today's standards would be considered psychotic, were actually going into flights of the imagination and locating answers to problems within the village. They would use masks or rocks or some sort of magical object that had power to it.

It occurred to me, because I was doing a character as far out of our reference point as the spirit of vengeance, I could use these techniques. I would paint my face with black and white make up to look like a Afro-Caribbean icon called Baron Samedi, or an Afro-New Orleans icon who is also called Baron Saturday. He is a spirit of death but he loves children; he's very lustful, so he's a conflict in forces. And I would put black contact lenses in my eyes so that you could see no white and no pupil, so I would look more like a skull or a white shark on attack.

On my costume, my leather jacket, I would sew in ancient, thousands-of-years-old Egyptian relics, and gather bits of tourmaline and onyx and would stuff them in my pockets to gather these energies together and shock my imagination into believing that I was augmented in some way by them, or in contact with ancient ghosts. I would walk on the set looking like this, loaded with all these magical trinkets, and I wouldn't say a word to my co-stars or crew or directors. I saw the fear in their eyes, and it was like oxygen to a forest fire. I believed I was the Ghost Rider.

Holy Hell, what happened to this guy... he made Ghost Rider into a flaming preacher... "He is a spirit of death but he loves children; he's very lustful." In what comic did I not read that Ghost Rider does little kids... To all aspiring actors do not read the books The Way Of Wyrd or The Way Of The Actor by Brian Bates or you run the risk of turing into Nicolas Cage and nobody wants that not even Cage.

I'm SO glad he didn't take the LOTR job (not clear if he was actually offered one...but if he was, the casting director would have been making huge a mistake IMO)

@shocktron. *YOU'RE* You might want to check your grammar before you call someone an idiot or a retard.

On another note, Nick Cage is a psycho! "I believed I was Ghost Rider.". And since when does Ghost Rider lust children?

I like that he's getting into the character, and working like a method actor, but the part where he mentions looking like a sprit of death who lusts kids isn't doing his reputation any favors. But I am looking forward to this movie. We really need more actors like Nic Cage who are willing to do crazy far out things.

Dude's insane! He may be a method actor but this is a bit too much even by Cage's standards.

Seems pretty far out; but at least it means he's dedicated to the role this time around (like he can afford NOT to be xD). Seriously though, I like Nic Cage, and I think you guys are taking what he said about the God thing that likes children (he didn't say it lusts for children, he said that the god was very lustful AND that he liked children... Even though it sounds suggestive, I don't think he meant it the way you think). :p

Wow I don't know where to start.
1) Tons of terrible movies + financial ruin = crazytown.

2) Who the hell would he have played in the Lord of the Rings?

3) Not such a stretch for the Matrix considering the acting from the actual actors.

4) A Wickerman sequel? Sadly I have seen this terrible film and he dies at the end (yeah yeah spoiler, believe me I saved you the trouble of watching it.) So how is he involved in a sequel?

Talk about a guy that knows how to get into character. Very impressive, very deep!

And guys, I realize most of you have never had any acting experience, but to pull off a performance, you HAVE to believe you are the character, that the characters world is reality. Otherwise there's no magic.
