With Jon Chu directing the G.I. Joe sequel, Paramount Pictures has set a release date for the movie. Also, some previous reports are speculating that only three characters will return for the upcoming sequel: Snake Eyes, Duke and Storm Shadow. And from the THR report it looks like this could indeed be true. There is still no official word will they be recasting other roles, so stay tuned for the updates.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

"A week after picking Jon Chu to direct G. I. Joe 2, Paramount has now set a release date for the sequel: August 10, 2012.

Chu is still in negotiations for the movie, which will likely undergo extensive casting changes."

That's pretty much it...What do you think? Is this going to be better than the first one? Share your thoughts below!

I liked the first one, but I don't see much hope with the sequel to be honest.
Jon Chu is directing. He also did the Justin Beaver movie...enough said.
Only 3 of the members in the first movie will be back. No Scarlet...fail.
And now the casting changes. So lame.
Guess I'll reserve judgement until I see it.

Ray Park as Snake Eyes was awesome. I thought the film was okay. I haven't really seen anything G.I. Joe related except that new animated movie that came out, which was a pretty fun watch.

I was watching the new GI Joe animated show, but haven't got to watch it recently. It was pretty good from what I saw. :F

Only 3 of the original cast are returning. Didn't we pick up that story? Anyway, yeah, I look forward to it for the sheer comedic value.

I can't wait for this! Just kidding. I'm not going to see this.

xXkryptoniteXx, That's funny you say Dennis qauid is the better actor. He actually is in the long run, but I remember seeing this movie (I love unintentional comedy) and Quid was awfulor just not interested. He seemed like he was going to laugh every time he said a line. His delivery was like an SNL skecth or somethin. Weird.

He's probably getting rid of ray park since he is a martial artist and not a dancer. I want to hear something positive about this movie but with every bit of news I keep having a deeper shade of red from face palming every time. Gi joe news and face palming is becoming a natural reaction

I hope this movie is good. I actually liked the first movie. (it's probably the only reason why i watched the G1 series and why watch GI Joe Renegades too.) The last movie made me a somewhat happy fan. I hope the second makes me an even happier fan. (Though I'm a bit worried as this is the same guy who did those two dance movies and that movie with the bad singer whose name I shalt not sayeth.)

Keep the characters appearances that of the comics/cartoons, and you can pretty much guarantee the fans will be happy. GI Joe doesn't really have a real plotline, so any direction will be okay. The story is basically GI Joes (good guys) fighting Cobra (bad guys). That's the story lol. I grew up on the cartoons and GI Joe: The Movie on vhs. There isn't much of a plot. And no one EVER dies. Ever. Which is bizarre considering they all use weapons and destructive vehicles for war lol. They all must have terrible aim I guess :P

So who are the three that are staying?
NERO

@George97: Duke, Snake-Eyes, and Storm Shadow are the only cast members returning according to a tweet from Rachel Nichols.

Whether that means the characters Hawk, Cobra Commander, Destro, Scarlet, etc are not going to be in the film at all or whether the actors Quaid, Levit, et al finally came to their senses and realized they were lashed to a shit franchise and bowed out I have no idea.

I hope they just drop Tater all together, the guy sullied up Duke with his male model, metrosexual, doucheitude.

I think what is meant is that the actors portraying Duke, Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes will return. The others will be recast or omitted. This is in no way a bad thing. There are a lot of characters and its to hard to add more and still focus on all of them.

I think they'll add Lady Jaye, Flint, Roadblock, Quick Kick, Alpine and maybe Beachhead or Bazooka. Cobra Commander, Destro, Baroness and perhaps Hawk will be re-cast. The writers hinted that The Crimson Twins may be in the film and maybe Major Blood. If the Commander wears the classic mask or hood (hopefully both) then there's no need for JGL to return as they can get a guy like Doug Jones to be really animated and then dub in a cool voice. Same for Destro. Now that ROC gave him the mask at the end they can just cast a guy and then do a CG head and use a good voice.

I'm kinda looking forward to this. Just because the director made dance films doesn't mean he can't make an action film. It's all about the script and actors. Hopefully better FX too. Also, a dance director may not shy away from the classic Joe costumes and could make it work. The first film was mediocre (some of it was dead on Joe, like the ridiculous Pit battle and undersea base), but there's potential here. With TF3 being the last of the trilogy Hasbro will most likely put more and better resources towards this Joe film.

I prey that there's a Sgt. Slaughter cameo too. The was a name rights issue in 2009 so they used Brendan Frasier instead. Hope that's fixed now.

Also, I thought Storm Shadow died in the first movie? And is Zartan gonna be the president of the USA??? I think it would be better to do a reboot since alot of people wont be back.
