Joseph Gordon-Levitt has already confirmed that we will not be seeing him as Cobra Commander in
G.I. Joe Retaliation. But when the trailer was released the Commander was featured. According to Jon Chu, who spoke with
MovieFon, this is not the same Commander saying,
"No (its not the same as Gordon Levitt's character). [Smiling] But we figured out a way that's pretty nice. And you get the Cobra Commander that you've always wanted. Or, to me, what I always wanted: a bad-ass villain. He's one of the most iconic villains ever. I'm even following him on Twitter -- he's so funny." Also he said that there was an issue with trying to get Cobra Commander from the first film to the second film, but they couldn't loose him.
Chu was also asked about adapting Firefly as one of the movies villains.
"He's One of my favorite characters and I had to have him in this movie. We do a different take on Firefly, no doubt, so he's not exactly the "Firefly" Firefly that we know. But he's a force to be reckoned with. He's a bad-ass and he still kicks some serious ass.", said Chu. One of the loose ends that Chu will be responsible for tying up will be the fate of Destro, who was imprisoned with Cobra Commander at the end of the first movie. Chu says to expect to see a glimpse of him in the film, but we will just have to wait and see.
Another interesting bit of information is when he talked about Stephen Sommers'
G.I. Joe movie. Not having anything negative to say about it Chu credits making changes to it to what makes
G.I. Joe so great. Said Chu
"It's hard, but I think everybody felt like we wanted to do a sort of re-attitude toward the movie. And that's part of the tradition of G.I. Joe, that it reinvents itself every several years. So it's sort of inline with what had been done, you know, whether it was in the cartoon or if they changed the theme song to another theme song. To me, all of those different transitions are what makes G.I. Joe so great.". He also said the biggest hurdle to making this film was the first movie saying,
"We had many times that we were like, 'Wait, what year did that movie take place? God dang it.' And we're still discussing some things. But, it's part of the challenge." Chu also stated he would have rather just made his own movie than trying to make a sequel because,
"For any filmmaker you want to start with nothing".
