Chris Pratt On The Comedy/Drama Ratio In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

The Parks And Recreation actor chats to The Huffington Post about taking the lead in next August's Marvel flick, and the balance between comedy (something many feel Marvel have become a bit too reliant on) and drama that we'll see in the movie.

Chris Pratt is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand actors around, and seems poised to take Hollywood by storm. He's rumored to be up for the lead in Jurassic World, but his first step up the ladder from supporting role status will be playing Peter Quill, aka Star Lord, in Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy. Pratt reveals to The Huffington Post that -- as is usually the case -- he has indeed signed on for multiple movies. "Yeah, they pretty much own me for as long as they want," he says with a laugh. "Which, hopefully, will be a really long time." He is also asked about the overall tone of the movie, and reveals that although there will be a lot of humor (as evidenced in the Comic Con footage that screened), it will take itself seriously when it needs to.

"I think it should be really fun. But, that being said, it takes the dramatic beats seriously. I mean, it takes itself seriously when it needs to. Just as a whole it doesn't take itself too seriously. But, it definitely takes it's dramatic moments seriously. And the dramatic arcs and the bits of emotion that you're supposed to feel something that you're supposed to feel something that I think you really will. But, hopefully, it will be because it's anchored to this comedy. Like, to the comedy that lives in it. If you tie comedy and drama together, than you don't have to go as big to get laughs and you don't have to go as big to get a real emotional response."

I'm guessing the rumored Iron Man cameo alone will get this about $175 million at the US Box Office

Awesome sauce, plain and simple.

GOTG will be amazing, and of course there's gonna be lots of humour. Not exactly a group of Cyclops's running around. These characters all have messed up personalities.

And the people that hate on Marvel's humour have no soul. The GA and us "Marvelites" love the humour because we're not sadsacks, we remembers our comic-filled childhoods and know what laughter is.

I hope Rocket is as funny as he is in the comics. And it's really just from the sh*t that he says.

Gotta be like the Tony Stark type from the movies. Not trying to be funny, just comes across funny from the smart ass stuff being said.

Just make it like the comics and it'll be perfect.

Why try to fix what's not broken? Every single marvel studios has been overall successful. Having comedy in their movies has yet to impact their box office intact adb the movies in general are critically acclaimed. The ones that say it's crap and overused and etc are the fan boys which is a minority. And even then everyone knows they will see the films so their whines are in vain

Anyone that didn't think there would be humour in GOTG, let's look at the cast...

Chris Pratt - Comedic Actor
Bradley Cooper - Hangover anyone???
Michael Rooker - Mallrats???
John C. Reilly - Obviously comedic actor

Let the haters that dislike the humour in the MCU come out and say this movie sucks without knowing anything about the GOTG.

Considering GOTG is a funny comic book, it would be ironic if the film turned out to be the most deadly serious MCU movie.

honestly, if there's not a lot of humor in this movie it wont be comic accurate. If you read the comics, GoTG is filled with smart asses just ragging on each other constantly.

Bring on Pratt as Star Lord!

GotG is primarily a comedy in the comics. I have a feeling the movie's gonna be the same way, which I'm fine with.

@ MexicanSuperman

You can't compare Watchmen to anything in the MCU. Watchmen was a panel-by-panel adaptation of a very sombre, very painful graphic novel. Not even a CBM when you think about it.

The MCU started with Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr. An actor known for his balance of character acting and comedic talent. From the success of Iron Man, obviously Marvel would inject humour into all of their movies. Whatever sells, get filmed.

I love it, it actually reminds me of comics. Did you not laugh at stuff when you read comics as a kid? I remember Marvel comics having lots of misplaced (and hilarious) humour in them. The writing was always kinda corny and silly. That's just what they were.

And the character development stuff in Thor 2...

First off, it hasn't been said HOW MUCH they cut off the run time, could have been only 30 seconds of Malekith development. And besides, he was a shitty villain in the comics, why should he have been the next Loki or the next Joker? He was the threat of the day, used to fill time in a movie setting up Loki's return to glory.

It's gonna be really funny to see how the ignorantly oblivious people negatively criticize the humor in this film. That will definitely tell you they haven't read a single GOTG comic in their life.

Let's see @ OldGreg

Iron Man Films - Tony Stark is a drunken, sarcastic, smart ass

Check...

Captain America Films - Not funny movies

Check...

Thor Movies - Darcy (I know, I'm not a huge fan of the character, but I like the actress, and I like the comedy)
Loki and Thor - Brotherly dynamic, works great on screen, reminds anyone with siblings of what it's like.

Check...

Avengers - Didn't read avengers comics(meh), but Joss Whedon, so enough said.

Incredible Hulk - Not funny movies.

I thought Thor the Dark World was a very well balanced movie in the sense of the comedy vs drama in the movie. Now my complaint would be more with the length of the film. I think if it a just a half hour longer they could have as a previous user posted in their article, given more screen time to Frigga and Jane to develop that farther. And also given Malekith a bigger back story, didn't even have to be a love lost even just more of a story of the type of warrior he was. I will agree he was somewhat underdeveloped. All and all it was very good movie to me that could have been great if those aspects were better played out.

'Why try to fix what's not broken?'
That mentality is the reason Hollywood products are so stale. If doing variations of the same thing always sells, why would we work in producing something truly new and ambitious? Right? Right?!

I'm exagerating obviously, but the point was that that's a dangerous statement. It can be the first step towards excessive self-complacency.

I found IM3 and T:TDW to have way too much humor. The dramatic arcs were barely there. They weren't terrible films, but they are setting a dangerous trend. There's nothing wrong with a CBM skewing towards comedy. But if you try to focus a little bit more towards drama, that doesn't mean you're doing a dark bummer film. For a good example, go to X-Men: First Class which, continuity and faithfulness to the comic aside, had some humor mixed with a very powerful dramatic arc, and it wasn't a 'dark brooding film' like so many people here seems to hate.

That said, I have high expectations for TWS and GOTG. They are tackling two new settings that I find incredibly exciting. I think 2014 will be an amazing year.

And then give me the exact opposite. All I'm saying.

Somebody made a point to me once (and its a spot-on point) that Marvel more or less are making 1980s action movies, just with superheroes. I mean DIE HARD and LETHAL WEAPON and STAKEOUT and BEVERLY HILLS COP 1 and 2 and even the first 3 INDIANA JONES films were big actioneers with alot of comedy in them.

Did any of you kids whine about the humor in DIE HARD or RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK? Umm, no?

I think the reason fanboys whine about humor in Marvel films is that they get Vietnam-esque flashbacks to BATMAN & ROBIN. They fear that we're sliding back to that craptastic time and My God I wish they would get therapy and know the bloody difference. We're OK. Shhhh, I'm hear to hold you.

B&R wanted to be camp, a satire of its own very genre. The Adam West TV show did camp of Batman that was funny and even intelligent (definately nailed the Golden Age Batman wackyness). B&R was just too dumb for its own good. I mean why are Bat Skates funny? They're not, it's just dumb. Now if Batman beat bad guys while skating a figure 8 and got perfect scores from the judges (except the Russian judge, of course)...that might be funny.

Or let me put it another way. Take out all those jokes which offended some of you in THOR: TDW. You would have an actioneer that takes its story and villain and consequences seriously. What does this mean kids? It's not camp!

Of course I find it funny that some nerds rag on Marvel for being too jokey, yet also turn around and rag on MAN OF STEEL for being too serious. (Umm, you folks realize there were jokes in MOS. Right?)

ALegendaryPanda - Oh boo hoo. Trailers being dishonest? In other news, the sky is blue.

Go dig up the BLADE RUNNER trailer sometime, which sold itself as another Harrison Ford sci-fi actioneer...and if you've seen BR, that's not the movie at all that was sold to the masses.

I don't know a thing about GOTG, so I cannot comment on the humor level. If the comic book is full of it, then the movie should as well I'm guessing. That being said, for other comic book movies, I hate that comedy is thrown in for comedy's sake. I'm not saying every movie has to have a brooding feel to it, but there is a way you can incorporate a funny line or two here and there without it taking from the movie. I do think Marvel goes overboard with the comedy. And this has nothing to do with Marvel vs. DC as the only movies DC really has on record is the Dark Knight trilogy and MOS. Green Lantern was an overly used comedy fest with Ryan Reynolds and you see how that turned out. I'm not sure if the comedy is used to keep things more kiddy friendly or if it's just a misguided direction. As another poster said, the overly used comedy bits takes away from the development of characters. Just my two cents.
