James Gunn On GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Being The Exact Movie He Wanted To Make

James Gunn recently sat down for an interview with Collider's Christina Radish and talked about trying to finish the film, the marketing of the movie, and more!! Take a look at what he had to say.

James Gunn, director of the upcoming Marvel Studios film, Guardians  of the Galaxy attended the 40th Annual Saturn Awards in Burbank, CA. While there, Collider took the chance to conduct an interview and ask him about what it was like creating Guardians, his vision for the film and more. Check out the following short portion of what he had to say here.

When asked how he set up to go about the tone of the film, this is what he had to say:

Gunn: I went as dark as i wanted to go. I'm creating exactly the movie I wanted to create. When i got hired to do Guardians, it was the dream of a lifetime for me. This is what I've been working towards. I've always wanted to create a space adventure, and especially a space adventure with a raccoon. Now that I'm finally able to do it, I created exactly the movie I wanted to make. There's violence in it and there's dark humor, but it isn't like I'm trying to make 'Super 2', which is a very dark movie. But, that's not what this is. Everything I've done is very different from each other. So, I made it as dark as I wanted to make it, and they were okay with that.

In regards to finishing the final touches on the film:

Gunn: Dude, I wish I knew. My end date is July 7th, because I'm flying to Singapore to start the press tour. So, I hope to God it's July 7th. Although I have a feeling that I'll have to be looking by internet at some shots that haven't been finalized yet.

Here is what he had to say about finding the tone and balance of film.

Gunn: I always like to think that I make movies that are like Nirvana songs. They have a slow verse and then they pop into high gear and then they go back into slow and then they pop into high gear again...
...I don't really like movies that are all one or the other. It's really about the play between both of them. Now that I've said that, there's actually lots of movies that I like that are one or the other but it's just not for me as a filmaker.

Collider: And then usually at the end of those films someone gets shot in the head at the end.

Gunn: Yeah. I'm not going to make any promises about Rocket.

And how he felt when offered the chance to direct Guardians of the Galaxy:

Gunn: Have you ever seen one of those 'American Idol' contestants start crying when they win 'American idol'? That's what it felt like. It did. For real.

Make sure to head over to Collider to watch a video of the interview and read more about filming Guardians and what other projects he might have for the near future.

I can't wait to see this. By the looks of the trailers, it's done like how the comic series are. I hope they use outer space slangs for cursing like they do in the comics

"I'm creating exactly the movie I wanted to create." Now that's something you don't expect to hear from many of today's directors. Good for him.

It's interesting to hear him talking about how he was able to make exactly the movie he wanted to after everything that went down with Edgar Wright. There has been a lot of speculation about how controlling Marvel was in that situation. Maybe Gunn's ideas are just very in line with Marvel's. I do wonder if Wright's version of Ant Man was something that just really wouldn't have gelled with the rest of the MCU.

@Ethan, that is hilarious haha. I really can't wait for this movie. Gunn just seems like this is the movie he's been waiting for and comparing this to a Nirvana song was pretty bad ass.

Sweet.
Gunn should tackle another CBM property after this.
Maybe he's the one to finally make that Runaways movie.
Or even a fun DC movie. Imagine him handling Flash's Rogues!

Good for Gunn. I'm pleased this film has turned out to be what his vision is. I've never really loved a film Gunn has done except i did enjoy Slither.

Everything about the film from the trailers, the posters everything with advertising has looked great so far. I really hope this film will entertain me like Captain America: TWS. Right now, Marvel Studios is on a roll.

I like a director who knows his place, is a team player and doesn't think he's more important than he is. When you work for Marvel Studios you have to check your ego at the door and unfortunately some directors (and actors) have an ego that can't even fit through the front door.

Wait...he's making the movie that he wants to make?

I thought that wasn't allowed at Marvel Studios? I thought they just had to tow the line? That their vision was for shit? Where are the crying Wright fans to bitch about Feige not giving Wright that same freedom? Oh, wait, he wasted 8 years on Ant-Man and still could get things done by deadlines...poor guy...

I can't [frick]ing wait for this flick! Everything looks perfect, sounds perfect, and hits right where it should.

I'm hoping Ant-Man is good and I really wanted to see Wright's version but I give a lot of credit to Marvel.

They hire a lot of Hungry directors that are passionate about the material which is awesome.

I'm really feeling the MCU right now too because they feel like comics. I'm not a fan of Iron Man 3, but I've also read Iron Man comics that I didn't like.... and even though I'm not a fan of IM3, I still can't wait to see Iron Man in the Avengers: AOU, and I think that's awesome, I can't say that about any other franchise. There is always something to look forward to with Marvel.

Well, well, well. Gunn got to make the movie he wanted to make. Maybe Marvel really isn't the evil corporation that treats it's directors badly like some on here try to make them out to be.

Nah, they'll still find any excuse to claim that lol
